Con il ritorno nelle aule scolastiche, la sfida posta dalla pandemia nel mantenere la sicurezza per alunni, insegnanti e famiglie richiederà uno sforzo collettivo senza precedenti. Senza precedenti sarà anche l’intervento del governo nel garantire mascherine e gel igienizzante nelle scuole. Infatti, come annunciato dal commissario speciale per l’emergenza coronavirus Domenico Arcuri, 11 milioni di mascherine chirurgiche ogni giorno saranno distribuiti negli istituti scolastici italiani per gli alunni e il personale. Secondo le stime di Tuttoscuola (fonte Ansa.it), considerando i 200 giorni minimi di lezione e non includendo la coda degli esami di Stato del primo e del secondo ciclo, la distribuzione di DPI raggiungerà complessivamente la cifra di 2 miliardi e 200 milioni di mascherine non riciclabili, per un totale di 8.800 tonnellate di rifiuti da smaltire attraverso l’incenerimento. Cifre da capogiro che andranno ad aumentare considerevolmente il problema dell’inquinamento e dei rifiuti che stiamo affrontando nel mondo.

Le opzioni ecosostenibili per le mascherine di comunità, utilizzate con la finalità di cercare di ridurre la diffusione del virus Covid-19 nelle scuole, sono dunque importanti non solo per salvaguardare la salute dei nostri bambini e degli insegnanti, ma anche quella dell’ecosistema attraverso la riduzione dell’inquinamento dovuto allo smaltimento finale e alla produzione di oggetti monouso.

Quali alternative abbiamo? Se consentito dall’istituto scolastico dei nostri bambini, per un impatto più responsabile ed ecologico possiamo considerare l’utilizzo di mascherine di tessuto con doppio strato e/o filtro sostituibile. La nostra preferenza è per materiali naturali come cotone biologico, canapa e lino. Meglio se con certificazioni GOTS e Oeko-Tex, che garantiscono l’assenza di sostanze chimiche tossiche e una maggiore sicurezza per la pelle dei più piccoli.

English – 6 options of face masks for kids: back to school with sustainability and creativity

As students return to the classrooms, the challenge posed by the pandemic in keeping students, teachers and families at large safe will require an unprecedented collective effort. Unprecedented will also be the government intervention in guaranteeing face masks and hand gel in schools all around Italy. In fact, as announced by the special commissioner for the coronavirus emergency Domenico Arcuri, 11 million chirurgic face masks will be delivered every day in classrooms all over the country for both teachers and students. According to Tuttoscuola (Ansa.it), after taking into consideration the minimum of 200 days of classes and not including the 2 cycles of the final state exams, the distribution of non-recyclable face masks will reach the total of 2.2 billion. Overall, it will mean that 8.8 thousand tons of waste will have to be burned to rid of it. Astonishing numbers that will inevitably increase the pollution crisis and waste problem the world is facing.
The eco-friendlier options community masks have, if utilized in order to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in classrooms, are therefore important not only to safeguard the health of our children and teachers, but also of the entire ecosystem through the reduction of pollution that is created by the burning of single use objects.

What alternatives do we have? If school institutions allow for it, in order to have a more responsible and ecological impact in the next academic year we could consider using face masks made out of double layer cloths, and/or with changeable filters inside. Our preference is for natural products such as organic cotton, hemp and lino. It is even better if the facemasks are certified GOTS and Oeko-tex because they guarantee the absence of toxic chemicals and a better safety for young people’s skin.
