Brand in focus is a series of interviews made for Sfashion-net*, our partner in the diffusion of an alternative model to fast fashion. For them we interview Giulia Boccafogli, architect and creator of contemporary handcrafted jewels by recovering precious leathers. We have decided to tell the story of Giulia and her creations because of her choice of using recycled materials and the modern design, elegant and original of her jewels, the ‘Giulielli’. Giulia, can you tell us which products your brand makes and who is behind it? “I am an architect who at a certain point fell in love with making jewelry and for a long time now, this has become my job. At the center of my work there is the great formal and technical research, aimed at giving life to an original product and personal, the craftsmanship accuracy and the ethical choice of sourcing the raw material. I use exclusively Italian recovered leathers. What for some is waste, for me is gold. I work alone but I use some external collaborators for some processes or aspects of my job such as, for example, the image”. Why did you decide to start creating jewelry for your brand? What inspired you? “I have not decided. It happened. Slowly it crept into my everyday life and from passion it became love. Since this does not happen often, at a certain point I realized that I had to indulge all this, dedicating quality time to it. In 2013 I quit my career as an architect and since then I have dedicated myself exclusively to my ‘Giuliellis’. They are born like this: after having inhabited my somewhat bizarre fantasy for a long time, they are rationalized, designed and then handcrafted. Many things inspire me, I don’t like to put limits in this sense, but certainly art, music, literature, cinema and mythology are very welcome sources and so is the theme of travel”. When and how did you start making jewelry? “The beginning is, as for many, to be found in adolescence, when creating small jewels was really just a pastime. Then, as I said before, it happened that, becoming better and better, and thanks to the appearance of the internet, between 2004 and 2005, I started to tell my passion on a blog, which in a short time became quite popular. This opened several doors for me and also my eyes. Then things went fast and now I’m here at 40”. Giulia, what do you think is the most important aspect of your brand? “Definitely the research. I have always been committed to trying to shape original, new jewels that could become recognizable over time. I am obsessed with this aspect. Mine is not a highly commercial product: leather jewelery is a niche in the niche of contemporary jewelery. If I lost this aspect, therefore, my work would no longer make sense”. Can you tell us 2 ‘Giulielli’ that have a special meaning for you? “Having to mention only two, I would say my Jabots, because they represent the beginning of a new path, the exact moment when I decided to specialize in leather processing. In particular, jabots are among the pieces in which the exclusive use of scraps it is clearer. Then probably Sciamano, because in a certain way it represents the beginning of a new path of technical research and a more sophisticated image, a piece that has opened my head to many other lines”. What aspects of sustainability does your brand pay attention to? We have seen the use of exclusively recycled leathers, why this choice? Are there any other sustainability aspects that you are committed to or plan to include? “Surely the procurement of the raw material, the exclusive use of recycled leathers, is the aspect I care most about. When I decided to specialize, choosing this material, I immediately realized that there would be ethical implications . Leather is a very precious material, also and above all for its derivation. In craftsmanship, as in many other individual works, there is sustainability if the attention we have and the gestures we make are in that direction day after day already as individuals. Of course my commitment is maximum and I am trying to make improvements in all sectors. The packaging is already made entirely of natural and recyclable materials for some time (I am just finishing to dispose of some stocks of packaging tape). Almost all of my suppliers is Italian, except for some imported small parts. I do not use any type of machinery, apart from a small goldsmith’s drill, which I use for filing and polishing. are some metal parts. Also, I always try to be kind and helpful, even when I have a bad day, because in my opinion this too makes a difference“. What do you think of networking with other micro-enterprises? “I find it vitally important and fundamental to find similar realities, especially humanly. Networking, helping each other, making their skills available for sectoral growth is beautiful but also very complex: it is easy to lose sight of your goal if you do not it is within a collective that espouses the same values and the same hopes“.
Come hai iniziato? Quante accortezze in tanti aspetti! For them we interviewed Anna Cosulich of Lo Spaventapasseri, a project born over twenty years ago in the heart of the historic center of Genoa. We have chosen to tell the story of this Italian sartorial brand, which produces 90% of its creations in Liguria, because it creates comfortable, unique and suitable design garments for everyone, recovering fabrics that large companies can no longer use. Hi Anna, in your online shop I have seen many beautiful dresses in which shapes and colors come together creating an outcome that is never ordinary. You can see the care with which they are designed and built. Can you tell us who is behind Lo Spaventapasseri? “We are a group of women who collaborate to create sustainable clothes with quality fabrics, with a short and controlled supply chain. I have always worked on the creation of models, I follow the production of all the garments, I take care of communication.Sonia, my partner since 1999, manages and coordinates all the activities.Cristina, Silvia, Simona, Paola and Laura take care of both the points of sale and wholesale and online sales”. Why did you decide to start this business? What inspired you? “I started this activity almost by chance, on the proposal of a friend: we were both eager to try to make ourselves independent from our families and at the same time to test our creativity: this is how the first tiny Lo Spaventapasseri store was born: a 360-degree textile experimentation laboratory, where papier-mâché puppets, fabric notebooks, knitted scarves, dresses were created… “. Anna, when did you start making clothes? How did you start? “I started making clothes when I was very young, even before finishing high school and then during my university years, driven above all by the desire to create something of my own and experimental.Initially each garment was a unique piece, we used all kinds of materials and various techniques for coloring and processing the fabrics, purchased strictly in stock”. What, in your opinion, is the most important aspect of Lo Spaventapasseri? “There are two most important aspects of our work: the pleasure of cooperation and the sustainability of our supply chain“. 2 products of your brand that have a special meaning for you: what are they and why? “The garments we are most fond of are our continuative garments, that we propose every season, because they remind us that it is not fashion, but the taste that must guide our choices. And a sustainable wardrobe also means this: having a few pieces, carefully chosen, that last longer, much longer, than a season. An example of a continuous garment are our trousers, which are called Ghianda”. What aspects of sustainability do you pay attention to? “For us, sustainability means choosing recycled materials (most of the fabrics we use are inventories, which we select one by one), producing locally, in small workshops, all Genoese, with which we have been collaborating for years and with which we have a relationship of trust and esteem. We also try to pay attention to sustainability in other aspects of our work: we use clean energy, our Genoese couriers use only bicycles or electric vehicles, for our packaging we mainly use paper, we recycle offcuts as much as possible to produce small accessories… ” . How much attention you put in so many aspects! Do you plan to include more aspects in the future? “We try to continually improve from this point of view, and there is always work to be done, on all fronts …”. Anna, what do you think about networking with other micro-enterprises? “We are excited about networking with other micro-enterprises. From the comparison with colleagues we always come out enriched, motivated, full of ideas.Together we can be stronger and more visible, and propose with ever more force a different, more conscious and more sustainable consumption model“.

Producete singolarmente in modo artigianale ogni paio richiesto. English – Brand in focus – RE-BORN Shoes: born from the long tradition of recovering materials Brand in focus is a series of interviews made for Sfashion-net*, our partner in the diffusion of an alternative to fast fashion. For them we interviewed Nicola Masolini of RE-BORN Shoes. We have chosen to tell the story of this Italian brand because we like a lot the spirit of reuse and recovery of materials of different types, which has been the basis of RE-BORN for generations. We let you discover the philosophy, history and materials of this sustainable brand in the interview. Hi Nicola, can you tell us about RE-BORN Shoes? “RE-BORN Shoes of the Eredi Masolini Raimondo – MASOLINI1949 shoe factory are born from our historic family-run company, which can now boast four generations of experience in the footwear sector. The craftsmanship handed down from father to son, combined with the entrepreneurial spirit that knows how to continually adapt production to new social and economic dynamics, ensures that our products are carefully finished, resistant, comfortable and with an elegant and captivating design”. Why did you decide to start this business? “Since the Second World War, the town of Gonars, in the lower Friuli area, has made the footwear sector the strong point of its industrial and artisan development: the shoes produced in its numerous shoe factories were sold both in Italy and abroad in countries such as Austria, Germany, Holland and Belgium.Valentino Masolini, my great-grandfather, and his children were among the pioneers of this exciting phase of economic development. The expertise, resourcefulness and passion that allowed us to establish a solid production reality are still for us the fundamental values to refer to in running the company”. What inspired you? “It is true that necessity often stimulates ingenuity and leads to the conception of innovative solutions. After the war, when raw materials were scarce, Valentino Masolini and his sons thought about recycling the shoes and fabrics of military uniforms left over from the war just ended; this is how they transformed those ‘waste’ materials into new shoes. And it is precisely this spirit of reuse that we were inspired by in designing our RE-BORN Shoes: in giving life to this new series we have done nothing but resume those same techniques of processing and recovery of materials that were at the origins of company! The inspiration also came from my personal experience, working for several years in Ethiopia, always in the footwear sector where I was able to collaborate with large shoe factories, international brands, government development projects in the sector and with Sole Rebels, an alternative brand that it was already starting to work in the recycling sector. These various experiences have allowed me to travel a lot, visiting fairs and factories all over the world… thus understanding where the shoe industry was going, grasping the various qualities and reflecting on the many defects of the mass market”. When and how did you start the RE-BORN Shoes project? “We started the RE-BORN Shoes project about a year ago, officially participating as exhibitors at Barcolana 51, where we shown our shoes which for the occasion were mostly produced with used sails”. What is the most important aspect of your brand for you? “The most important aspect of our brand is to be able to enhance materials that until a few days before were destined to be destroyed. The fact that they can be ‘reborn’ exudes a sense of positivity to those who appreciate our history and our products, but above all to those who wear them. Our customers are our biggest sellers, when they buy our shoes we make it clear that they are part of the brand. Since then, feedback has begun from our customers, who communicate their emotions in wearing them and in telling their friends about the story and the materials with which the shoes were made.Furthermore, communication with customers allows us to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the materials we use, so that we can always improve”. 2 brand products that have a special meaning for you: what are they and why? “I am attached for various reasons to all the models we make, but one of the products I love is the RE-BORN T1 item: shoes made with sails, used jeans, tires and towels”. “Materials that are completely different from each other with origins and stories that are intertwined between kilometers of motorway, nautical miles, walks in parks and hotel rooms”. In terms of sustainability, the reuse of materials otherwise destined to be thrown away is the aspect that we really liked. The soles, the shoe uppers and the packaging (backpacks from beach umbrellas) are also made from recycled materials. RE-BORN Shoes uses jeans, umbrellas canvases, towels, fabrics, tires, artistic weaving production remains, boat sails. Each single pair ordered is an handcraft piece. Are there any other projects in sight? “Many new projects and collaborations are emerging, opening up new paths for us and introducing various materials to become shoes. From scraps of handcrafted fabrics from Val Badia to t-shirts, through tartan to make kilts. So we are always looking for new emotions to convey to those who follow us.Our dream is also to be able to create an ‘important’ supply chain, creating other jobs where materials are recovered in various ways, making them available for our production, but also for others who may need them”. What do you think of networking with other micro-enterprises? “Networking is still a fundamental step for a circular economy like the one we are developing. We have already started a co-branding collaboration with a foreign brand. In Italy we will have to collaborate above all in marketing, perhaps creating situations such as fairs, sales lines or other things to study together, which will allow us to reduce costs by giving us greater visibility”.

Producete singolarmente in modo artigianale ogni paio richiesto.

“Since the Second World War, the town of Gonars, in the lower Friuli area, has made the footwear sector the strong point of its industrial and artisan development: the shoes produced in its numerous shoe factories were sold both in Italy and abroad in countries such as Austria, Germany, Holland and Belgium.
Valentino Masolini, my great-grandfather, and his children were among the pioneers of this exciting phase of economic development.

Since then, feedback has begun from our customers, who communicate their emotions in wearing them and in telling their friends about the story and the materials with which the shoes were made.
Furthermore, communication with customers allows us to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the materials we use, so that we can always improve”.

2 brand products that have a special meaning for you: what are they and why?

“I am attached for various reasons to all the models we make, but one of the products I love is the RE-BORN T1 item: shoes made with sails, used jeans, tires and towels”.

RE-BORN T1 (on the right)

So we are always looking for new emotions to convey to those who follow us.
Our dream is also to be able to create an ‘important’ supply chain, creating other jobs where materials are recovered in various ways, making them available for our production, but also for others who may need them”.
