Scrivendo l’articolo (che puoi trovare qui) sull’antica tecnica del Sashiko adottata dalle moderne pratiche di moda sostenibile, avevo deciso di provare in prima persona ad applicarla. Improvvisamente si è infatti accesa una lampadina e mi è sembrata l’idea perfetta per quei jeans chiari accantonati nell’armadio da 10 (15?) anni, in qualche lavaggio sbiaditi vicino al ginocchio. Capita anche a te di non accettare di rinunciare a un capo a cui tieni? Il modello, il colore, il tessuto jeans leggero, mi piacevano troppo per rassegnarmi a non indossarli più. Sono rimasti lì in attesa di un’idea. Ed è arrivato il Sashiko.

Perché non provare? L’alternativa sarebbe stata mantenerli inutilmente nel guardaroba. Su quell’azzurro rilassante, le punte di bianco erano un richiamo alle onde del mare. Così nelle serate di blocco forzato per il Covid-19, pian piano ha preso forma uno scorcio di mare, affiancando punto dopo punto, filo dopo filo, tre sfumature di blu. 

Chiedo scusa agli esperti maestri presenti e passati di Sashiko per l’imperfezione, per la rozzezza dei punti e le geometrie sgangherate, abbozzate a mano con imprecisione. Il desiderio di arrivare alla fine e di recuperare finalmente quei pantaloni mi ha tenuto compagnia nelle serate casalinghe, con un po’ di suggestione immedesimandomi nelle antiche riparatrici di indumenti lisi che nelle buie sere d’inverno pazientemente muovevano il tessuto intorno all’ago da ricamo. 

Ora sono pronti per la stagione di onde, mare e pesciolini sott’acqua.

English – Dress ECOde’s lifestyle: on the wave of the article about Sashiko

By writing the article (which you can find here) on the ancient Sashiko technique adopted by modern sustainable fashion practices, I decided to try it firsthand. Suddenly it all clicked and it seemed to me the perfect idea for those light jeans set aside in the closet for 10 (15?) years, in some washing faded near the knee area. Does it also happen to you to not accept to give up on a garment you care about? The model, the color, the light denim fabric, I liked too much to resign myself to not wearing them anymore. They stood there waiting for an idea. And Sashiko has arrived.

Why not try it? The alternative would have been to keep them unnecessarily in the wardrobe. On that relaxing blue, the white points were a reference to the waves of the sea. So on the evenings of forced lockdown for Covid-19, a glimpse of the sea slowly took shape, placing side by side three shades of blue point after point, thread after thread.

I apologize to experienced current and past Sashiko masters, for the imperfection, for the roughness of the stitches and the unrefined geometries, sketched by hand with inaccuracy. The desire to arrive to the end and finally recover those trousers stayed with me in the home evenings, with a bit of suggestion identifying myself in the old repairers of threadbare clothes who on the dark winter evenings patiently moved the fabric around the embroidery needle.

Now they are ready for the season of waves, sea and underwater minnows.

Spesso ci chiediamo cosa possiamo fare per contribuire a limitare l’impronta ambientale creata da ciò che viene prodotto e consumato. Magari ci siamo ritrovati a pensare che “tanto è inutile, anche se faccio qualcosa non cambia nulla”. Ecco un’idea che davvero farà la differenza:  se in 10.000 ci uniamo per non acquistare indumenti nuovi per 3 mesi, possiamo evitare la produzione di 360.000.000 litri di acqua e di 1.400.000 chili di emissioni di CO2. 

Abbiamo deciso di diventare ambasciatori dell’iniziativa di Slow Fashion Season perché crediamo che questa esperienza, che sarà divertente e interessante, possa portare un concreto risultato in termini di impatto ambientale!

Dal 21 giugno al 21 settembre invece di acquistare indumenti nuovi scopriremo altri modi di far fronte alle nostre necessità relative all’abbigliamento. Sarà divertente e interessante perché non ci priveremo di nulla, al contrario ci troveremo più ricchi (in tutti i sensi ).

Vi prepareremo una breve guida su come vivere questi tre mesi e saremo disponibili per tutto il periodo ad aiutarvi a trovare alternative all’acquisto del nuovo.

A Verona, il 25 maggio vi mostreremo come creare una maglia e un accessorio in pochi semplici passi utilizzando rimanenze di tessuto e come rimodernare magliette e camicie che altrimenti non indosseremo più (qui i dettagli Ecofashion: laboratorio con pranzo e stile). Vorremmo ripetere il laboratorio anche in altre città.

Slow Fashion Season è un’iniziativa creata da CollAction, la prima piattaforma crowdacting ufficiale al mondo. Crowdacting significa “agire collettivamente e condizionatamente allo scopo di ottenere un impatto positivo sul mondo e sui suoi abitanti”. Il concetto è molto simile al crowdfunding, ma le persone si impegnano a compiere azioni, invece di inviare denaro. Quando viene raggiunto l’obiettivo predeterminato di numero di persone, il gruppo agisce.

L’anno scorso Slow Fashion Season ha consentito il risparmio di 92.100.000 litri di acqua e di 375.400 kg di emissioni di CO2, quest’anno desideriamo fare di più!
”Vogliamo rendere le persone consapevoli che ci sono altre soluzioni – che un altro stile di vita, o un modo di consumare è possibile. E che fare la cosa giusta non deve essere noioso o doloroso, può essere divertente e creativo, soprattutto se supportato dalla nostra crescente comunità di CollActivisti. Possiamo aspettare per i governi, l’industria o altre persone per agire. Oppure possiamo dare un esempio con le nostre azioni, insieme“, spiega Ron van den Akker, co-fondatore e amministratore delegato di CollAction.

We often ask ourselves what we can do to help limit the environmental footprint created by what is produced and consumed. Maybe we found ourselves thinking that “in any case it’s useless, even if I do something it doesn’t change anything”. Here is an idea that will really make the difference: if 10,000 people join to not buy new clothes for 3 months, we can avoid the production of 360,000,000 litres of water and 1,400,000 kilos of CO2 emissions.

We have decided to become ambassadors of the Slow Fashion Season initiative because we believe that this experience, which will be fun and interesting, can bring a concrete result in terms of environmental impact!

From 21 June to 21 September, instead of buying new clothes, we will discover other ways to meet our clothing needs. It will be fun and interesting because we will not deprive ourselves of anything, on the contrary we will find ourselves richer (in every sense ).

We will prepare a brief guide on how to live these three months and we will be available throughout the period to help you find alternatives to new purchases.

In Verona, May 25th we will show you how to create a shirt and an accessory in just a few simple steps using fabric remnants, and how to modernise shirts and shirts that otherwise we won’t wear anymore (here the details Ecofashion: a workshop with lunch and style). We would also like to repeat the workshop in other cities.

Slow Fashion Season is an initiative created by CollAction, the first official crowdacting platform in the world. Crowdacting means: “taking action collectively and conditionally with the purpose of achieving positive impact on the world and its inhabitants”. The concept is very similar to crowdfunding, but people commit to actions, instead of money. When the predetermined target of number of people is reached, the group acts.

Last year Slow Fashion Season allowed the saving of 92.100.000 liters of water and 375.400 kg of CO2 emissions, this year we want to do more!

“We want to make people aware that there are other solutions – that another lifestyle, or way of consuming is possible. Elisa Ripamonti, una nostra affezionata lettrice e amica di Dress Ecode, ci racconta della sua esperienza con il marchio inglese Thought, del suo primo acquisto on line e di alcune riflessioni sullo stile di vita zero waste.

Si tratta di un’azienda, con sede a Londra, che si impegna a operare in modo etico: nella scelta dei tessuti utilizzati, nel design, nella produzione e nella spedizione del loro abbigliamento. Mirano a ridurre al minimo la loro impronta ambientale, considerando ogni impatto della loro attività. Adottano uno modello slow fashion, proponendo abiti che durino nel tempo. Se riusciamo a intervistare Thought, scriviamo un articolo per raccontarvi meglio della loro sostenibilità.

“Quando inizi il percorso verso lo zero waste, spesso cominci analizzando i rifiuti che produci e piano piano passi alla sostituzione, alla ricerca di oggetti fatti con materiali diversi, all’autoproduzione… Bagno e cucina, gli ambienti più zeppi di rifiuti potenziali e più facili da affrontare, perché le soluzioni ci sono, esistono, sono semplici da conoscere e da attuare. Poi non riesci a fermarti e mentre leggi, guardi video, condividi discorsi, ti accorgi che anche nel vestire ci sarebbe bisogno di un cambio di traiettoria, che anche se pare incredibile, la plastica si è infiltrata anche lì, in fitte reti di trame e ordito, in filati che tutto sono tranne che naturali e a impatto zero, e proprio tu non ci avevi pensato, anzi non l’avresti neppure mai detto. È  proprio mentre inizi a pensarci che all’improvviso, quel caso che non esiste, ti compare di fronte, in un paese di montagna delle province bergamasche, in una vetrina staccata del negozio “altromercato”, che è lì solo per invogliarti, una scatola di cartone di una bellezza unica: pare colorata a pennellate leggere. Contiene le cinque paia di calze più originali e colorate che abbia mai visto negli ultimi tempi e con un prezzo assolutamente equo. Quella scatola ha il marchio “wearthought”, che richiama il vestirsi in modo ragionato. INCREDIBILE! Acquisto lì la prima gift box di calze fatte in fibra di bamboo e poliestere riciclato. Calze assolutamente morbide, confortevoli e calde nelle gelide giornate di montagna.

E allora sai che c’è? Vediamo un’altra scatola di calze… scatta quindi l’analisi della scatola e una scritta, un sito internet, vuoi non cliccare? Si apre un mondo, un mondo che a detta loro rispetta tutto ciò che stavo cercando e soprattutto ha capi originali e belli, colorati, con design accattivante, che rispecchi anche il mio stile colorato, sportivo e a volte etnico (ma c’è di tutto, dal classico all’elegante). Non il solito bio con colori tenui, pizzi, gonne lunghe, che ero abituata a vedere.

Sono fortunata perché tempo due giorni iniziano i saldi e per due giorni continuo a scorrere tutti i capi, perché mica posso comprare tutto e poi perché non ho MAI comprato abbigliamento su internet, come si fa? La mia taglia la so, ma il sito è inglese e, si sa, qualcosa cambia. Quante volte poi capita che qualcosa sia per te bellissimo e una volta indossato risulta un super flop? Da internet come fai? C’è da calcolare la spedizione, a carico dell’acquirente, oltre all’impatto ambientale della stessa. In più, se qualcosa non ti va per qualsiasi motivo puoi rimandare indietro, però a carico tuo! Ma come? Nell’era del reso gratuito, oltre a ricevere pagando devo anche restituire pagando. Sono tentata di rinunciare, ma il click compulsivo sul sito per vedere le meraviglie continua. Chi mi conosce se ne accorge e sbircia: ecco che un’amica rimane folgorata come me, e allora decidiamo di tentare un acquisto condiviso!

Evvai! Prima scriviamo all’azienda via Facebook per sapere qualcosa di più su taglie e spedizioni, ma ci rispondono tardi, dopo circa una settimana  e noi ormai abbiamo comprato…

Appena acquistato, però dopo aver letto cento volte la tabella delle taglie, ci accorgiamo che ogni capo ha la sua! Esatto, sì, magari io ho la 44 italiana, per loro 14, ma alcuni capi hanno una forma tale per cui ti dicono anche la misura dell’orlo, del giro vita reale (sotto il seno) e  del giro cintura, lo svasamento maniche e tanto tanto altro ancora!  Come potevamo sapere di dover aprire la tabella taglie per ogni indumento scelto? Aiuto, ci andrà bene quello che abbiamo ordinato? Sale il panico, mandiamo una mail all’istante e questa volta ci rispondono la mattina dopo, ma dicono che se l’ordine è già stato processato non è semplice cambiare, comunque provano ad avvisare. Rischiamo, non diciamo più nulla e attendiamo, anche perché la tabella taglie è davvero complicata e per fortuna il gioco vale la candela.

La merce arriva in 5 giorni (weekend incluso) in una bella busta di carta (niente pluriball), capi solo piegati con un foglio di carta velina all’interno, etichette in cartoncino appuntate con un filo di cotone e spilla da balia e i tessuti… favolosi: al tatto, alla vista, a contatto con la pelle, insostituibili. Ci accorgiamo anche che l’etichetta interna è in stoffa, un dettaglio per niente trascurabile.

La mia amica però ha comprato due abiti che le stanno lunghi… e le paiono larghi, oh no! Pensa e ripensa, rispedisci? Tieni? Regali? Che fare? Alla fine l’amore per il tessuto e la comodità hanno vinto e quindi la decisione è presa: si fanno accomodare da una sarta e si tengono, dopo averli “sperimentati” non se ne può più fare a meno. Davvero, non se ne può fare a meno, la differenza c’è, si sente e la spesa è stata giusta e non eccessiva. Infine, sarà brutto dirlo, ma non è necessario lavare il vestito appena tolto ad ogni utilizzo e non si ha neanche l’ascella pezzata! La fibra biologica paga anche su questo!”.

English: Dress Ecode’s lifestyle – Elisa tests the clothes from the brand Thought and she tells us about!

Elisa Ripamonti, one of our loyal reader and dear friend of Dress Ecode, tells us about her experience with the English brand Thought, about her first online purchase and about some reflections on the zero waste lifestyle.

It’s about a company, based in London, which commits itself to work ethically: in the choice of the fabrics, in the design, in the production and in the shipment of their garments. They aim to minimise their environmental footprint by considering every impact of their business. They adopt a slow fashion model, proposing clothes that last over time. If we manage to interview Thought, we will write more about their sustainability in an article.

“When you start the path towards zero waste, you often begin with analysing the waste you produce and slowly move on to alternatives, looking for objects made with different materials, self-production, etc. Bathroom and kitchen, the most crammed spaces of potential waste and the easiest to deal with, because the solutions are there, they exist, they are simple to know and to implement. Then you can not stop, and while you read, watch videos, share speeches, you realise that even in dressing there would need a change of path, that even if it seems incredible the plastic has infiltrated there too, in thick nets of weaves and warps, in yarns that are all but natural or with zero impact, and just you had never thought about that, in fact you would never even have said it. It is just as you start to think that suddenly appears in front of you (for that “coincidence” that does not exist), in a mountain village in the province of Bergamo, in a window of the store “altromercato”, a cardboard box of a unique beauty which is there just to tempt you: it seems coloured with light brush strokes. It contains the most original and colourful five pairs of socks I have ever seen in recent times and with an absolutely fair price. That box has printed the brand “wearthought”, which recalls dressing in a reasonable manner. INCREDIBLE! I buy there the first gift box of socks made of bamboo fibre and recycled polyester. Socks absolutely soft, comfortable and warm in the cold mountain days. 

So you know what? Let’s see another box of socks… Then the analysis of the box starts, and a sign, a website, do not you want to click? A world opens up, a world that according to them respects everything I was looking for and above all it has original and beautiful clothes, colourful, with attractive design, which also reflects my colourful, sporty and sometimes ethnic style (but there is everything, from classic to elegant). Not the usual organic with soft colours, lace, long skirts, which I was used to seeing.

I’m lucky because in two days the sales starts and I continue to browse all the clothes for two days, because I can not buy everything and also because I have NEVER bought clothing on the internet, how do you do it? I know my size, but the site is English and, you know, something changes. How many times does it happen that something is beautiful for you and once worn is a super flop? How do you buy from the internet? The shipment must be calculated, at the expense of the purchaser, in addition to its environmental impact. In addition, if something does not suit you for any reason you can send it back, but at your expense! But what? In the era of free returns, in addition to receiving payment, I must also return by paying. I am tempted to give up, but the compulsive click on the site to see the wonders continues. Those who know me realise it and peek: here is a friend who remains as surprised as me, and then we decide to try a shared purchase!

Yay! First we write the company via Facebook to find out more about sizes and shipments, but they respond late, after about a week and we have already bought…

As we buy, but after reading a hundred times the size chart, we realise that each item has its own chart! Exactly, yes, maybe I have the Italian 44, for them 14, but some garments have a shape such that they also tell you the measure of the hem, of the real waistline (under the breast) and of the belt loop, the sleeves flare and much more! How could we know that we have to open the size chart for each chosen garment? Help…Will we fit what we ordered? Panic rises, we send an email instantly and this time they answer the next morning, but saying that if the order has already been processed is not easy to change, however, they try. We risk, we say nothing more and wait, also because the size chart is really complicated and luckily the game is worth the candle.

The goods arrive in 5 days (weekend included) in a beautiful paper bag (no bubble wrap), items only folded with a sheet of tissue paper, cardboard labels pinned with a cotton thread and safety pin, and the fabrics are… fabulous: to the touch, to the sight, in contact with the skin, irreplaceable. We also notice that the internal label is made of fabric, a detail that is not negligible. 

But my friend bought two dresses that are long … and they seem large, oh no! Thinking and thinking again… sending them back? Keeping them? Gifting? What to do? In the end the love for the fabric and comfort won and so the decision is made: they will be fixed by a seamstress and kept, after having “experimented” them, you can not do without them. Really, you can not do without it, the difference is there, you can feel it and the expense was right and not excessive. Finally, it will be ugly to say it, but it is not necessary to wash the dress just taken off with each use and you do not even have the armpit pierced! Organic fibre also pays on this!”.

La prossima settimana sarà dedicata alla solidarietà con i lavoratori dell’industria dell’abbigliamento bengalese dall’International Labor Rights Forum.

L’iniziativa nasce per:

• esortare il governo locale a consentire che l’Accordo sulla sicurezza degli incendi e degli edifici in Bangladesh continui a essere in vigore pienamente e in modo indipendente in Bangladesh fino al 2021 o fino a quando l’ RCC (Remediation and Coordination Cell) del governo sia dimostrabilmente pronta.

L’Accordo ha contribuito a migliorare radicalmente la sicurezza delle fabbriche di abbigliamento in Bangladesh da quando è stato istituito in seguito al crollo della fabbrica del Rana Plaza, che nel 2013 ha causato oltre un migliaio di vite; è fondamentale che continui il suo importante lavoro salvavita.

• esprimere preoccupazione per le misure repressive utilizzate dalla polizia del Bangladesh e da altre forze di sicurezza in risposta alle recenti proteste salariali, che hanno provocato dozzine di manifestanti feriti, un decesso e, secondo quanto riferito, centinaia di licenziamenti.
• sostenere i lavoratori nel far sentire la propria voce su quanto poco portano a casa dopo una giornata di lavoro. I lavoratori hanno protestato contro la revisione del salario minimo recentemente annunciata, che è molto lontana dalle richieste dei leader sindacali e non è affatto vicina a un salario di sussistenza, così come la disparità di trattamento dei lavoratori con diversi gradi di retribuzione. Si vuole chiedere al governo di fermare le violenze e le intimidazioni dei lavoratori e dei sindacalisti e di smettere di ignorare le richieste dei lavoratori.

Martedì 22 gennaio, alle 12.30, è organizzata una dimostrazione all’Ambasciata del Bangladesh a Washington.

English: From the 28th of January, a week dedicated to supporting poorly-paid workers in Bangladesh

Next week will be dedicated by the International Labor Rights Forum to solidarity with the Bangladesh garment industry workers.

The initiative has been created with the purpose of:

• urging the government of Bangladesh to allow the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh to fully and independently continue operations in Bangladesh until 2021, or until the government’s Remediation and Coordination Cell (RCC) is demonstrably ready. The Accord has been instrumental in radically improving the safety of garment factories in Bangladesh since it was established in the wake of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013 that claimed over a thousand lives; it is critical that the Accord be allowed to continue its important and life-saving work.
• expressing the concern about the repressive measures used by Bangladesh’s police and other security forces in response to recent wage protests, which resulted in dozens of demonstrators injured, one death, and, reportedly, hundreds of dismissals.
• supporting the workers in raising their voices about how little they take home after a day’s work. The workers protested the recently announced minimum wage revision, which falls far short from the demands of the unions leaders and is nowhere near a living wage, as well as the unequal treatment of workers in different pay grades. The goal is to call upon the government to stop the violence and intimidations of workers and unionists and to stop disregarding workers’ demands.

Tuesday, January 22, at 12.30 pm, a demonstration is organized at the Bangladesh Embassy  in Washington.

Nel turbinio della vita quotidiana capita di accantonare oggetti da riparare. Tra queste, le scarpe. Al mattino di corsa ti infili un paio di stivali e la cerniera decide di abbandonarti proprio quei 5 secondi prima di uscire di casa… Li lasci lì, pensando che hai bisogno di un paio nuovo. Basta buttarli e mettersi alla ricerca, in fondo è divertente scovare accessori e vestiti e pensare a un nuovo acquisto. Però… sono praticamente nuovi. Si tratta solo di una cerniera di uno dei due stivali. Sono così comodi e ancora in buono stato. Ma soprattutto… scrivi per una pagina di moda sostenibile, non puoi di certo creare rifiuti inutili!

Piano piano accade con altre paia… una scarpa che si macchia, un tacco che si usura, quegli stivali che stanno larghi sul polpaccio, una suola rovinata. Si aggiungono nel frattempo anche le borse: la tracolla che cede, la chiusura che si stacca, la sbucciatura sul davanti. Una precisazione: non è perché la qualità sia scarsa, ma parliamo di scarpe tenute negli anni (tanti) o acquistate di seconda mano e di borse vintage! La borsa a cui si è staccata la chiusura è degli anni ’40, quella della tracolla degli anni ’80, dopo decenni può capitare.

Per non vedere questi ruderi accumulati nell’armadio pensi a quanto sarebbe semplice buttare e ricomprare. Questione di un attimo, metti nel sacchetto, scendi ed è fatta. Ma no! Non riesci, è diventato impossibile. Dopo aver visto con i tuoi occhi e raccolto rifiuti sulle coste non riesci. Riparare: questa è la scelta migliore. Così resisti alla vista dei ruderi finché un giorno non trovi il tempo di andare dal calzolaio. È una fortuna trovarne uno bravo e paziente, che ti consigli e trovi con te la soluzione più adatta a fare in modo che indosserai davvero ancora quelle scarpe. Anche se non è dietro casa non importa. Carichi la bici con un borsone (un consiglio: non aspettare di accumularne così tante!) e ti presenti dal calzolaio con un elenco di acciacchi di scarpe e borse, insieme a idee per rimetterle a nuovo.

Nella foto, il primo ritiro in una giornata di pioggia in bici: la borsa a tracolla, le scarpe con il tacco che era sbucciato, agli stivali larghi sul polpaccio abbiamo aggiunto un bottoncino. ENGLISH: Shoes mission! (Dress ECOde’s lifestyle)

In the whirlwind of everyday life it happens to set aside objects to be repaired. Among these, the shoes. In the morning, you run a pair of boots and the zipper decides to leave just those 5 seconds before leaving home …You leave them there, thinking that you need a new pair. Just throw them and look for a new pair, after all it is fun to find out accessories and clothes and to think about a new purchase. But … they are really new. It is just a zipper of one of the two boots. They are so comfortable and still in good condition. But above all … you write for a sustainable fashion page, you can not certainly create useless waste!

Slowly it happens with other pairs … a shoe with a stain, a heel that wears out, those boots that are wide on the calf, a ruined sole. In the meantime, also the bags are added: the shoulder strap that yields, the closure that comes off, the peeling on the front. A clarification: it is not because the quality is poor, but we are talking about shoes held over the (many) years or bought second-hand and vintage bags! The bag that has come off the closure is the ’40s, the shoulder strap of the’ 80s, after decades it can happen.

Not to see these ruins accumulated in the closet, you think how simple it would be to throw them and buy back. It takes one second: put them in the bag, go down and it’s done. But no! You can not do it, it has become impossible. After having seen with your eyes and collected waste on the coasts, you can not. Repair: this is the best choice. So you resist the sight of the ruins, until one day you find the time to go to the shoemaker. It is fortunate to find a good and patient shoe repairer, who will advise you and find with you the best solution to make sure that you will really wear those shoes again. Even if it’s not around the corner, it does not matter. Load the bike baskets with a bag (a tip: do not wait to accumulate so many ruins!) And you appear in front of the shoe repairer with a list of afflictions of your shoes and bags, along with ideas on how to put them back to life.

In the picture, the first pick up on a rainy day ride bike: the shoulder bag, the shoes with the heel that was peeled, the wide boots on the calf we added a little button. We’re waiting for the second withdrawal! Back and forth, but it’s worth it, I look at the bags recovered and the shoes shining like new in the closet and I feel better!

D’altra parte con sincerità desideriamo raccontarvi che questo cammino è fatto anche di sforzi quotidiani che sosteniamo per cercare di vivere in modo più coerente possibile con quanto proponiamo e le idee che condividiamo. Comprendiamo le piccole o grandi difficoltà che possono accompagnare un cambiamento del proprio stile di vita o della propria famiglia. Comprendiamo, perché nel nostro impegno quotidiano nella vita reale, non solo sul nostro sito internet, la pagina Facebook o l’account Instagram, viviamo queste piccole/grandi sfide.

Per questo vorremmo raccontarvi com’è la vita pratica di Dress ECOde, in una rubrica dentro il blogzine dedicata al racconto di gesti in linea con quanto scriviamo e agli intoppi che possono capitare, condividendo in tutta franchezza successi (come una riparazione riuscita di un paio di jeans) e insuccessi (ad esempio pensieri di tornare allo stile di vita meno consapevole Scriveteci della vostra vita pratica, racconteremo ciò che anche a voi capita!

Perhaps we should say with a loud voice: “It’s very easy, it’s so simple, it’s easier said than done!”. On the one hand it is true: trying to adopt more conscious and careful behaviors in respect of others and of nature is not impossible. Preferring to buy a garment produced in a responsible way, choosing not to buy, repairing, reusing, making sure that a brand is sustainable, donating clothes that are not worn anymore, looking for what you need in the used … they are not arduous missions! Anyone can start, anyone can slowly take one more step, with their own pace.
On the other hand, we sincerely want to tell you that this journey is also made of daily efforts that we support to try to live as coherently as possible with what we offer and the ideas we support. We understand the small or big difficulties that can go with a change in one’s lifestyle or one’s family lifestyle. We understand it because in our real life daily commitment, not only on our website, Facebook page or Instagram account, we live these small / big challenges.

For this reasons, we would like to tell you how the practical life of Dress ECOde is, in columns inside the blogzine dedicated to stories of actions in line with we write and of problems that can happen, honestly sharing successes (such as a well-done repairing of jeans) and failures (for example thoughts on going back to a less conscious lifestyle Write us about your practical lifestyle, we will tell here  what happened to you!

Quanti di noi hanno un paio di jeans nell’armadio? Soprattutto quelli preferiti, vorremmo che si mantenessero belli per sempre. In generale, ci piace allungare la vita dei nostri vestiti! Ecco alcuni accorgimenti per farli durare nel modo più sostenibile possibile (sulla sostenibilità dei jeans stiamo studiando per prepararvi un bell’articolo):

• Innanzitutto é meglio lavarli il meno possibile, quando hanno macchie o sono proprio sporchi, non solo per evitare che si restringano o sbiadiscano, ma anche per ridurre il consumo di acqua e quindi l’impatto sull’ambiente. Meno si lavano e più sono belli. Dal sito di Hiutdenim Co: “Crediamo che più resisti senza lavarli, più bello diventerà  il tuo paio di jeans”. Qui puoi leggere di più sui benefici di ‘No Wash Club’! Anche il brand inglese Albam suggerisce. “Ci sono molte correnti di pensiero su come prendersi cura dei jeans. Alcuni dicono ‘Wear them ever, wash them never’ (Indossali sempre, lavali mai)”. Il marchio svedese Nudie Jeans sostiene: “Rispetto ad un nuovo paio di jeans asciutti, l’odore di un paio ben indossata poco prima del lavaggio è completamente diverso. È un odore che potrebbe molto probabilmente resuscitare i morti. Ma è sicuramente l’odore di un vincitore”.  

• Lavali con acqua fredda, invece di acqua tiepida o calda, perché è più delicata per le fibre.
• Meglio lavarli a mano, soprattutto se sono decorati o hanno inserti in ecopelle; se li metti comunque in lavatrice, ricordati di farlo a pieno carico e imposta un programma delicato.
• Per farli durare di più, prima del lavaggio chiudi la cerniera lampo o i bottoni.
• Rigirali per il lavaggio, così si protegge il davanti. E inoltre avrai modo di verificare di non aver dimenticato nulla nelle tasche
• In caso di macchie, pre-tratta con uno smacchiatore ecologico o anche con semplice sapone delicato.
• Utilizza un detersivo delicato (ecologico), senza esagerare con le quantità, perché non è vera l’equazione “più detersivo=più pulito”!
• Un vecchio trucco per ravvivare i jeans è quello di metterli a bagno in acqua e aceto prima del lavaggio (consigliamo di sostituire l’aceto con l’acido citrico, perché più sostenibile). Non abbiamo evidenza del fissaggio dei colori ma sicuramente diventeranno più morbidi! Qualcuno aggiunge anche la birra.
• In caso di jeans induriti puoi metterli in ammollo in acqua e acido citrico, aggiungendo 1 cucchiaio di sale grosso.
• Per avere jeans morbidi, come ammorbidente per il lavaggio utilizza l’acido citrico.
• Non strizzarli, perché si rischia di torcere e spezzare le fibre. Per togliere l’acqua puoi arrotolarli e premere con decisione.
• Stendili all’aria, evitando la luce diretta del sole. È meglio evitare l’asciugatrice, li maltratta! Puoi metterli in orizzontale, oppure posarli su un asciugamano che assorba l’acqua o appenderli nella doccia lasciandoli sgocciolare.
• Se proprio è necessario stirarli, stirali a rovescio con ferro caldo con vapore, dalle tasche alle gambe.
• Appendili su una gruccia di legno, piegandoli all’altezza della ginocchia in modo che la vita penda verso il basso e lasciando che “respirino” nell’armadio.
• Per ravvivarli tra un lavaggio e l’altro puoi preparare una soluzione da mettere in uno spruzzino con 50% vodka (liscia) e 50% acqua. Puoi sostituire la vodka con l’acido citrico oppure utilizzare 1 cucchiaio di bicarbonato sciolto in mezzo litro di acqua e una decina di gocce del tuo olio essenziale preferito.

Ps Il metodo di riporli nel freezer non è scientificamente provato! Il freddo sembra catturare i batteri in modo da eliminare l’odore per un po’, ma una volta indossati il calore corporeo attiverà nuovamente i batteri.

ENGLISH –  Jeans: let’s make them last with some little tricks!

Who has a pair of jeans in the wardrobe? Especially the favorite ones, we would like to maintain them perfectly forever. In general, we like to make life of our clothes longer! Here there are few tips to make them last in the most sustainable way:

• Firstly, it’s better to wash them the less frequently as possible, when they have stains  or they are really dirty, not only to avoid that they shrink or fade but also to reduce water consumption and so the impact on the environment. The less you wash them, the more beautiful they are. From the website Hiutdenim Co:  “We believe, the longer you can go without washing them, the more beautiful your pair of jeans will become”. Here you can read more on the benefits of ‘No Wash Club’! Also the UK brand Albam suggests: “There are many thoughts on how to care for your jeans, some say, ‘Wear them ever, wash them never’. The Swedish brand Nudie Jeans claims: “Compared to a new pair of dry jeans, the smell of a well-worn pair just before wash is a completely different matter. It’s a smell that could most probably raise the dead. But it’s most definitely the smell of a winner”. 

• Wash them with cold water, instead of warm or hot one, because it’s more delicate on fibres.
• Better hand washing, especially if they have decoration or ecoleather inserts; if you still put them in the washing machine,  remember to load it fully and to set up a delicate program.
• To make them lasting longer, close the zipper or buttons before washing.
• Turn them over for washing, so the front is protected. And you will also have the opportunity to verify that you have not forgotten anything in your pockets 
• In case of stains, pre-treat with an ecological stain remover or even with simple mild soap.
• Use a mild (ecological) detergent, without exaggerating with quantities, because “the most detergent = the most cleaner” equation is not true!
• An old trick to revive the jeans is to soak them in water and vinegar before washing (we recommend replacing the vinegar with citric acid, because it’s more sustainable). We do not have evidence of the fixation of the colors but surely the jeans will become softer! Someone even adds beer.
• In case of hardened jeans you can soak them in water and citric acid, adding 1 tablespoon of coarse salt.
• To get soft jeans, as a fabric softener use citric acid in washing cycle.
• Do not squeeze them because you risk twisting and breaking the fibers. To remove the water you can roll them up and press firmly.
• Hang them out avoiding direct sunlight. It is better to avoid the dryer, mistreat them! You can place them horizontally, or place them on a towel that absorbs water or hang them in the shower letting them drip.
• If you really need to iron them, stir them upside down with hot iron with steam, from the pockets to the legs.
• Hang them on a wooden hanger, bending them at the knees so that the waist hangs down and letting them “breathe” in the closet.
• To revive them between washings, you can prepare a solution to put in a spray with 50% vodka (smooth) and 50% water. You can replace the vodka with citric acid or use 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate dissolved in half a liter of water and a dozen drops of your favorite essential oil.

Ps The method of storing them in the freezer is not scientifically proven! The cold seems to capture the bacteria so as to eliminate the smell for a while, but once worn the body heat will activate the bacteria again.

And you, what tricks do you know?

A great second-hand purchase: long- lasting cashmere. Do you know the impact of this fiber?

The cashmere market has expanded in the last 20-30 years causing a rapid increase in the number of goats (4 times as many as there were in Mongolia 30 years ago, the region where cashmere mostly comes from). That increased amount of goats means overgrazing, that led to massive land degradation and soil erosion, impacting the climate. 

What can we do? Buying second-hand cashmere. It is a high-quality material, soft, keeping you warm and comfortable and it is long lasting. Choose a classic piece that you can wear for decades, you won’t regret it.

On Saturday we found this (second-hand) super soft cardigan, 100% cashmere, with accurate details like the double small bottons, for a very convenient price (the twin set was 18 euros). Dressing in a more sustainable way does not always mean expensive!

Il mercato del cashmere si è ampliato negli ultimi 20-30 anni causando un rapido aumento del numero di capre (4 volte tanto quelle presenti in Mongolia 30 anni fa, la regione da cui principalmente proviene il cashmere). L’incremento significativo di questi animali comporta pascolo in eccesso, che causa un massiccio deterioramento del terreno e l’erosione del suolo, con conseguenze sul clima.

Cosa possiamo fare? Acquistare cashmere  di seconda mano. È un materiale di alta qualità, soffice, mantiene al caldo, è molto confortevole e dura a lungo. Scegliete un capo classico da indossare per decenni, non ve ne pentirete!

Sabato abbiamo trovato questo golfino super morbido (usato), 100% cashmere, con dettagli molto accurati come i doppi bottoncini, a un prezzo davvero conveniente (18 euro il twin-set). Vestire in modo più sostenibile non vuol sempre dire costoso!

Un’alternativa: scegliete indumenti di cachmere sostenibile, verificandone la provenienza e l’impegno del produttore verso le persone e l’ambiente.

Sarà possibile acquistare i capi  per due settimane fino al 16 novembre. 

Le attività umane (l’agricoltura, il disboscamento, l’estrazione petrolifera e mineraria, la costruzione di dighe e di nuove strade) insieme ai cambiamenti climatici hanno distrutto e frammentato significativamente l’ambiente dei primati.
I proventi della collezione temporanea finanzieranno i progetti per la protezione di questi animali e del loro habitat, garantendo lunga sopravvivenza.

Facile dire “cerco di comprare da un marchio sostenibile”… non così facile individuarlo! Cosa dovremmo guardare per capire se un brand sia sostenibile e responsabile? Abbiamo provato a identificare 15 aspetti per aiutarci a scegliere da chi acquistare riducendo l’impatto negativo sulle persone e sull’ambiente. Trovare un produttore al 100% sostenibile è un sogno, ma non perdetevi d’animo: l’importante è cercare di fare il possibile e soprattutto perseguire gli obiettivi che reputiamo più rilevanti. E se trovate un marchio vicino alla perfezione perché non contattarlo e suggerirgli ciò che secondo voi manca? Dress Ecode vi aiuta!
Un brand è sostenibile e responsabile se…

1. Prevede beneficenza, donazioni, collaborazioni con comunità locali. Se l’acquisto contribuisce a sostenere organizzazioni con finalità sociali, umanitarie, ambientali, di salvaguardia di animali, di supporto di comunità locali è positivo.
2. Ricicla oppure riutilizza materiali, trasformando, riparando, decorando o modificando vecchi prodotti o tessuti,  invece di ricorrere a nuove materie prime. Per esempio può prevedere collaborazioni con altre aziende da cui approvvigionarsi di scarti da trasformare nella propria produzione.
3. Genera un’impronta ambientale limitata; è attento alla quantità di emissioni di CO2, allo spreco di risorse, al consumo di acqua, all’utilizzo di sostanze tossiche e/o inquinanti, al mantenimento dell’ecosistema locale, alla produzione di rifiuti, al ricorso a energie rinnovabili. Anche iniziative per piantare alberi e compensare il consumo di CO2 che deriva dal trasporto sono apprezzabili. Alcune aziende inoltre ricorrono a materie prime che derivano da foreste sostenibili.
4. Considera l’intero ciclo di vita del prodotto in fase di design, prevedendo cosa succede al manufatto una volta terminato l’utilizzo (sarà riciclato? smaltito? è biodegradabile? è compostabile? è riutilizzabile?). Lodevole se ha già accordi con altre organizzazioni per il ritiro dell’usato e il riutilizzo.
5. Rispetta le condizioni dei lavoratori, ossia garantisce caratteristiche fisiche del luogo di lavoro necessarie per lo svolgimento delle attività lavorative in sicurezza e salute, offre stipendi equi e che consentano un livello di vita adeguato, riconosce il valore delle professionalità (no sfruttamento), assicura l’assenza di discriminazioni, stabilisce orari di lavoro adeguati (no schiavitù), non sfrutta minori in nessuna fase della filiera produttiva e distributiva.
6. Ha sede vicino a noi (nella nostra città, regione oppure in Italia o in Europa) in modo da minimizzare l’impatto ambientale del trasporto dei nostri acquisti.
7. Propone un prodotto di artigianato, così da favorire il mantenimento di tradizioni e da preservare e accrescere la ricchezza culturale locale.
8. Usa fibre naturali al posto di fibre sintetiche derivate dal petrolio (es. nylon, poliestere, acrilico), che quindi non rilasciano microplastiche durante il lavaggio e che provengono da coltivazioni biologiche in cui è ridotto l’impatto sull’ambiente in termini di consumo di acqua e di assenza di pesticidi e sostanze tossiche, per l’uomo (soprattutto per chi ci lavora a contatto), gli animali e l’ambiente.
9. Evita sostanze chimiche tossiche e inquinanti anche per colorazione e finitura, preferendo per esempio tinte ad acqua o l’applicazione di tecniche tradizionali naturali.
10. Vende prodotti di buona qualità in grado di durare nel tempo, può fornire garanzie decennali o suggerimenti per la manutenzione del prodotto e su come farlo durare il più possibile.
11. È attento all’impatto dell’imballaggio e a non inquinare con il packaging. Per esempio utilizza carta/cartone, bioplastica, vetro, acciaio per contenere il prodotto venduto e ricorre a soluzioni ecologiche per imballarlo per la spedizione.
12. Mostra trasparenza descrivendo e condividendo informazioni su tutte le fasi dall’approvvigionamento alla distribuzione, per esempio fornendo tracciabilità della filiera produttiva, indicando come e dove avviene la produzione, quali sono le sostanze utilizzate ecc.
13. Ha punti vendita fisici, in modo da ridurre l’impronta ambientale del trasporto dei nostri acquisti.
14. Rispetta gli animali, tassativamente quelli protetti o in via di estinzione. Evita totalmente di utilizzare materie prime di provenienza animale oppure se ne fa ricorso anche parzialmente è estremamente attento a non sfruttare e provocare sofferenza agli animali, rispettando il più possibile l’ecosistema.
15. Ha ottenuto certificazioni. Per garantire che il prodotto sia biologico, es. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OCS (Organic Content Standard); per garantire il rispetto dell’ambiente, es. Oeko-Tex, FSC (Forest for All Forever), Carbon Reduction Label, Ecolabel; per garantire il rispetto delle condizioni sociali, es. FairTrade, FWF (Fair Ware Foundation), SA 8000 (Social Accountability International); per garantire il rispetto degli animali, es. Animal Free Fashion, Cruelty Free, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), RDS (Responsible Down Standard), RWS (Responsible Wool Standard); per assicurare che il prodotto sia riciclato, es. GRS (Global Recycle Standard), RCS (Recycled Claim Standard); per la misurazione dell’impatto dell’intero ciclo di vita del prodotto, es. LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). La certificazione ICEA (Istituto Certificazione Etica ed Ambientale) racchiude più certificazioni.

What should we have a look at in order to understand if a brand is sustainable and responsible? We have tried to identify 15 features to help choosing from whom to buy, reducing the negative impact on people and the environment. To find a 100% sustainable manufacturer is a dream, but do not lose heart: the important thing is to try to do everything possible and above all to pursue the objectives that we consider most relevant. A brand is sustainable and responsible if…

1. It’s engaged in charity, donation, partnership with local communities. It’s a positive thing if the purchase contributes to support organization with social, humanitarian, environmental, animal protecting, sustaining local communities.
2. Recycles or reuses materials, transforming, repairing, decorating or modifying used products or fabrics or refuses, instead of resorting to new raw materials. For example, it may envisage collaborations with other companies from which it obtains supplies of production waste to be used in their production.
3. Generates a limited environmental footprint; attentive to the amount of CO2 emissions, waste of resources, consumption of water, the use of toxic and / or polluting substances, the maintenance of the local ecosystem, the production of waste, the use of renewable energy. Moreover initiatives to plant trees and offset the CO2 consumption resulting from transport are appreciable. Some companies also use raw materials derived from sustainable forests.
4. Considers the entire life cycle of the product in the design phase, predicting what happens to the product once the use is completed (Will it be recycled? Disposed? Is it biodegradable? Is it compostable? Is it reusable?). Praiseworthy if it already has agreements with other organizations for the withdrawal of the used and for the re-use.
5. Respects the conditions of the workers, that is to say it guarantees the physical characteristics of the workplace necessary for the safety and health work, it offers fair salaries and allows an adequate standard of living, it recognises the value of professionalism (no exploitation), it ensures the absence of discrimination, it establishes appropriate working hours (no slavery), it does not exploit children at any stage of the production and supply chain.
6. Produces close to us (in our city, region or country) in order to minimise the environmental impact of the delivery of our purchases.
7. Offers a handicraft product, so as to favor the preservation of traditions and to secure and increase the local cultural richness.
8. Uses natural fibres instead of synthetic fibres derived from petroleum (eg nylon, polyester, acrylic), which therefore do not release microplastics during washing and which come from organic crops where the impact on the environment is reduced in terms of water consumption and absence of pesticides and toxic substances, for humans (especially for those who work in contact), animals and the environment.
9. Avoids toxic and polluting chemicals also in dyeing and finishing, preferring, for example, water dyes or the application of traditional natural techniques.
10. Sells good quality products that last overtime, it can provide decades of guarantees or suggestions for product maintenance and on how to make it last as long as possible.
11. It is attentive to the impact of package and not to pollute with packaging. For example, it uses paper / cardboard, bioplastic, glass, steel to contain the product sold and uses ecological solutions to pack it for shipping.
12. Shows transparency describing and sharing information on all phases from procurement to distribution, for example by providing traceability of the production chain, indicating how and where production takes place, which substances are used, etc.
13. It has physical stores, in order to reduce the environmental footprint of the transportation of our purchases.
14. Respects animals – strictly the protected or endangered ones. It totally avoids the use of raw materials of animal origin or if it uses them even partially it is extremely careful not to exploit and cause suffering to animals, respecting the ecosystem as much as possible.
15. Has obtained certifications. For ensuring that the product is organic, e.g. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OCS (Organic Content Standard); to ensure respect for the environment, e.g. Oeko-Tex, FSC (Forest for All Forever), Carbon Reduction Label, Ecolabel; for guaranteeing compliance with social conditions, e.g. FairTrade, FWF (Fair Ware Foundation), SA 8000 (Social Accountability International); for ensuring the respect of the animals, es. Animal Free Fashion, Cruelty Free, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatments of Animal), RDS (Responsible Down Standard), RWS (Responsible Wool Standard); to ensure that the product is recycled, e.g. GRS (Global Recycle Standard), RCS (Recycled Claim Standard); for measuring the impact of the entire product life cycle, e.g. LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). The ICEA certification (Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification) contains several certifications.
