Vestiti inutilizzabili: prima di buttarli ti suggeriamo di…

Quando un indumento è arrivato alla fine del ciclo di vita e proprio non lo indossiamo più, ci chiediamo se sia possibile evitare ancora che diventi un rifiuto da smaltire.

Riciclare, riutilizzare, donare o vendere capi dismessi contribuisce a ridurre l’impatto sull’ambiente. Dal sito di CONAU, il consorzio nazionale abiti e accessori usati: “Un esempio dei benefici ambientali ricavati da uno studio effettuato dall’università di Copenhagen dimostra i vantaggi ambientali ottenuti attraverso la raccolta di abiti usati. Con la raccolta di 1 kg di abiti usati si riducono:
•l’emissione CO2 di 3,6 chili ;
•il consumo di acqua di 6000 litri ;
•l’uso di fertilizzanti di 0,3 chili;
•l’utilizzo di pesticidi di 0,2 chili”.

In particolare, ci poniamo il problema per quei vestiti che non sono proprio in buone condizioni e quindi non possiamo venderli, portarli in negozi dell’usato, scambiarli in swap party o in siti dedicati come L’Armadio Verde o Scambilla oppure regalarli.
Cosa possiamo fare in questi casi?

A) La prima opzione è quella di provare a ripararli, da soli o portandoli in una sartoria. Spesso anche ciò che può sembrare ormai spacciato può essere ancora indossato grazie a soluzioni creative. Stencil, toppe, applicazioni, perline, ecc. Se non mi viene l’idea “salva-abito”, mi affido a una brava commessa della merceria da cui mi rifornisco per consigli utilissimi. Un paio di pantaloni irrimediabilmente danneggiati in più punti con la candeggina (nota: da non utilizzare perché non sostenibile!) sono ancora nel mio armadio grazie a un suggerimento della commessa, con grande soddisfazione 🙂

B) Utilizzare il tessuto per creare qualcosa di nuovo! In rete si trovano molti tutorial per trasformare da sé vecchi indumenti. Pininterest è una fonte ricca di spunti! Riciclando (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDVGnJCYZy6FuZpGg237eKA) è un canale youtube con idee interessanti. Non Sprecare dà questi suggerimenti: “Basta poco per trasformare i maglioni che non usate più in dei bellissimi copri tazzine, in comodi scalda mani e berretti o addirittura in una lampada. Camicie lise e calze rotte, invece, possono rivelarsi fondamentali per le pulizie domestiche. Le vecchie t-shirt possono diventare dei personalissimi bikini. Persino i bottoni possono essere riutilizzati per creare delle fantastiche tende o degli originalissimi cuscini, e con le calze di lana potrete creare dei meravigliosi tappeti. Se poi avete pile di jeans che non mettete più perché ormai fuori moda, potete tagliarli e farne shorts, creare delle capienti borse oppure dipingerli con la tecnica degli stencil in stile tatuaggi old school”.
Un altro modo per riutilizzare vecchie magliette o pigiami è ricavandone fazzoletti. Potete anche inserirli in un contenitore di vetro con il tappo forato e fungeranno da sostituti dei rotoli di carta.

C) Alcuni marchi accettano i loro capi dismessi, vale sempre la pena di contattarli per chiedere. Patagonia, North Face e Levi’s (quest’ultimo sembra non in Italia), altri brand seguiranno presto l’esempio. Anche alcune catene di fast fashion (come H&M, Oviesse, Zara) offrono questa possibilità, qualcuno stabilmente, qualcun altro in occasione di campagne specifiche.

D) Ci sono associazioni che raccolgono abiti non più utilizzabili, possiamo cercare nella nostra città chi se ne occupa. A Roma per esempio la Comunità di Sant’Egidio raccoglie non solo capi destinati alla vendita del Mercato Vintage Ecosolidale o distribuito a chi ne ha bisogno, ma anche ciò che non è più possibile rivendere o donare.
Humana, una Onlus internazionale, raccoglie abiti in 42 province italiane . Con i soldi ricavati dalla vendita dei vestiti (soprattutto in Africa e nei loro negozi solidali in Italia ed Europa) e del materiale non più utilizzabile vengono sostenuti progetti umanitari nei Paesi poveri del mondo e azioni sociali e di sensibilizzazione in Italia.

E) Verificare che possano essere utili in asili, scuole, associazioni e enti di volontariato (che si prendono cura di disabili, anziani o animali) nello svolgimento delle loro attività. Per esempio per creare costumi per attività ludico-educative che prevedono il travestimento oppure utilizzandoli come grembiuli “totali” (riparando tutti i vestiti) per i laboratori o ancora come bavaglini per i pasti (anche per adulti anziani o disabili) – Grazie alla nostra lettrice Elisa R. per il suggerimento. Coperte ormai rovinate o maglioni caldi  possono essere utili nei canili. Provate a contattare le organizzazioni nel vostro quartiere, é anche una buona opportunità di conoscere meglio ciò che fanno.

F) Provare a compostarli se si tratta di tessuti naturali (come il cotone, il lino, il bambù, la seta, la lana, la canapa, il cashmere, ecc.), che non abbiano assorbito liquidi tossici. Possono essere aggiunti al compost! È meglio ridurli in piccoli pezzi e rimuovere tutto ciò che non è compostabile (parti di plastica o metallo come le cerniere e i bottoni).

When a garment has reached the end of its life cycle and we do not wear it anymore, we wonder if it is possible to avoid that it becomes a waste to be disposed of.

Recycling, reusing, donating or selling decommissioned garments helps to reduce the impact on the environment. From the site of CONAU, the national used clothes and accessories consortium: “A study carried out by the University of Copenhagen demonstrates the environmental benefits obtained through the collection of used clothes. With the collection of 1 kg of used clothes are reduced:
• the CO2 emission of 3.6 kilos;
• water consumption of 6000 liters;
• the use of fertilizers of 0.3 kilos;
• the use of pesticides of 0.2 kilos “.

In particular, we address the problem of those clothes that are not really in good condition and therefore we can not sell them, take them to second-hand stores, exchange them in swap parties nor dedicated sites like L’Armadio Verde or Scambilla nor give them away.
What can we do in these cases?

A) The first option is to try to repair them, alone or taking them to a tailor shop. Often even what may seem to have been passed off can still be worn thanks to creative solutions. Stencils, patches, applications, beads, etc. If I do not get the “save-dress” idea, I entrust myself to a good shopkeeper of haberdashery from which I stock up for useful advice. A pair of pants irreparably damaged in several places with bleach (note: not to be used because it is not sustainable!) are still in my closet thanks to a suggestion of the shop assistant, with great satisfaction 🙂

B) Use the fabric to create something new! On the web there are many tutorials to transform old clothes from oneself. Pininterest is a source full of ideas! Riciclando (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDVGnJCYZy6FuZpGg237eKA) is a youtube channel with interesting ideas. Non Sprecare (an Italian website)  gives these suggestions: “It takes little to transform sweaters that you no longer use in beautiful cup covers, in comfortable warmers and caps or even in a lamp. Lise shirts and broken socks, on the other hand, can be essential for household cleaning. The old t-shirts can become very personal bikinis. Even the buttons can be reused to create fantastic curtains or original cushions, and with wool socks you can create beautiful rugs. If you then have stacks of jeans that you no longer wear because it is out of fashion, you can cut them and make shorts, create large bags or paint them with the style of stencils in old-school tattoos style”.
Another way to reuse old t-shirts and pajamas is obtaining handkerchiefs from them. You can also put the handkerchiefs in a glass container with a hole on the cover and they will be used as paper reel.

C) Some brands accept their cast-off garments, it is always worthwhile to contact them to ask. Patagonia, North Face and Levi’s (the latter seems not in Italy), other brands will soon follow the example. Even some fast fashion chains (such as H&M, Oviesse, Zara) offer this possibility, someone permanently, someone else for specific campaigns.

D) There are associations that collect clothes that are no longer usable, we can look for in our city who is dealing with them. In Rome, for example, the Community of Sant’Egidio collects not only garments for sale of the Ecosolidale Vintage Market or distributed to those in need, but also what can no longer be resold or donated.
Humana, an international non-profit organization, collects clothes in 42 Italian provinces. With the money derived from the sale of clothes (especially in Africa and their stores in solidarity in Italy and Europe) and of material no longer usable are supported humanitarian projects in poor countries of the world and social actions and awareness in Italy.

E) Verify if they can be usefull in kindergartens, schools, associations and voluntary organizations in carrying out their activities. For example, costumes for fun-educational activities that seek out the disguise or using them as “total” aprons and smocks for workshops or even as bibs for meals – Thanks to our reader Elisa R. for the suggestion. Ruined blankets or warm sweaters can be useful in kennels. Try to contact organizations in your neighborhood, it will also be a good opportunity to know what they do better.

F) Try to compost them if they are natural fabrics (like cotton, linen, bamboo, silk, wool, hemp, cashmere, etc.), that have not absorbed toxic liquids. They can be added to the compost! It is better to reduce them into small pieces and remove anything that is not compostable (plastic or metal parts such as hinges and buttons).
