Abbiamo scelto infatti di condividere gli aggiornamenti di notizie al massimo una volta al mese, evitando spam e comunicazioni inutili, utilizzando semplicemente le mail come un canale rapido e diretto per comunicare con i lettori. Inoltre abbiamo scelto uno sfondo scuro come testo della nostra mail di aggiornamento. Un&#8217;altra scelta \u00e8 stata quella di produrre pochissimo video (sul canale Vimeo), preferendo la scrittura per informare e raccontare, stabilendo di crearne al massimo ogni uno\/due mesi. E siamo qui a pensare cosa ancora possiamo fare per migliorare.\u00a0Non sono scelte dettate esclusivamente dalla comodit\u00e0, ma dal desiderio di ridurre il nostro impatto ambientale. Cosa c&#8217;entra tutto ci\u00f2 con l&#8217;impronta ecologica?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>I data center<\/em>.<\/strong> Elaborano tutti i flussi di dati di internet nel mondo. Il loro impatto in termini di consumi energetici e di emissioni di CO2 \u00e8 enorme e in aumento.\u00a0<strong>L&#8217;energia utilizzata nel nostro consumo digitale avr\u00e0 un impatto maggiore sul riscaldamento globale rispetto all&#8217;intera industria aeronautica.\u00a0<\/strong>La quantit\u00e0 di <strong>energia utilizzata dai data center \u00e8 raddoppiata ogni quattro anni e si prevede che triplicher\u00e0 <\/strong>nei prossimi 10 anni. Questi cambiamenti sono dovuti in parte all&#8217;aumento della\u00a0gamma di dispositivi di uso quotidiano &#8211; dai televisori, ai dispositivi di sicurezza domestica, ai sistemi di illuminazione e alle innumerevoli modalit\u00e0 di trasporto &#8211; che emettono e ricevono costantemente dati. (Fonte: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/jul\/17\/internet-climate-carbon-footprint-data-centres\">The Guardian<\/a>).<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>Le mail.<\/strong><\/em> Gi\u00e0 nel 2011 un&#8217;indagine dell&#8217;Ademe (agenzia francese per l\u2019ambiente e il controllo energetico) aveva portato alla luce <strong>l&#8217;impatto di\u00a0ogni e-mail del peso di un solo megabyte ricevuta o inviata: 19 grammi di anidride carbonica.<\/strong>\u00a0Considerando il numero di email annualmente spedite da ognuno di noi, l&#8217;impatto non \u00e8 per nulla irrilevante. I messaggi inviati sono riprodotti una decina di volte su diversi server, pi\u00f9 destinatari inseriamo e pi\u00f9 energia \u00e8 consumata, pi\u00f9 pesa la mail e pi\u00f9 produrr\u00e0 in inquinamento.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>L&#8217;invio di una mail<\/strong> con un allegato da 1 MB richiede un consumo pari a quello di una lampadina accesa per 2 ore (25 wattora<b>)<\/b>, viaggiando spesso per migliaia e migliaia di chilometri prima di arrivare a destinazione, anche se scriviamo a qualcuno nella nostra citt\u00e0 o nel nostro stesso ufficio! Le mail sono elaborate dai server di cui si servono i provider, enormi torri di computer che consumano grandi quantitativi di energia. Giorno e notte, 24 ore su 24, 365 giorni all\u2019anno, devono essere continuamente raffreddate. (Fonte: <a href=\"https:\/\/valori.it\/internet-alimenta-la-crisi-climatica\/\">Valori.it<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>I video.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Del consumo energetico legato a internet,<strong>\u00a0i video risultano i principali colpevoli, creatori di un disastro ecologico per via dei megabyte impiegati<\/strong>. Lo studio pubblicato da\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theshiftproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019-01.pdf\">The Shift Project <\/a>\u00a0mostra che il 60%\u00a0dei flussi di dati globali \u00e8 generato da 4 tipi principali di video online, creando oltre\u00a0<b>300 milioni di tonnellate di CO2 <\/b>ogni anno, paragonabili alle emissioni di una nazione intera come la Spagna.\u00a0(Fonte: <a href=\"https:\/\/valori.it\/internet-alimenta-la-crisi-climatica\/\">Valori.it<\/a>). La televisione in streaming, Skype, i videogiochi, la videosorveglianza richiedono un consumo maggiore.<\/p>\r\n<p>Un report americano (ironicamente commissionato nel 2013 dai lobbisti dell&#8217;industria fossile e citato nel libro <em>The New Dark Age<\/em> di James Bridle) riporta che l&#8217;utilizzo di un tablet o di uno smartphone per <strong>guardare in modalit\u00e0 wireless un&#8217;ora di video a settimana<\/strong> consuma all&#8217;incirca la stessa quantit\u00e0 di <strong>elettricit\u00e0<\/strong> <strong>di due nuovi frigoriferi domestici<\/strong>. Passare a forme pi\u00f9 pulite di energia \u00e8 ormai necessario, non solo per il nostro consumo digitale. Google afferma che i suoi 14 data center (che alimentano Gmail, YouTube e Search in 4 continenti) consumano il 50% in meno di energia rispetto ai data center convenzionali e, rispetto a 5 anni fa, forniscono una potenza di calcolo 7 volte maggiore con la stessa energia elettrica.\u00a0Invece, per raffreddare i server di un data center la cinese Alibaba utilizza l\u2019acqua di un lago naturale e sta valutando di realizzarre una torre del vento per raffreddare i server di un altro centro (Fonte: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenreport.it\/news\/energia\/qual-e-il-costo-ambientale-di-una-ricerca-su-internet\/\">Greenreport<\/a>).<\/li>\r\n<li>Evitare <span style=\"color: #acc0a5;\"><strong>inutili sprechi &#8220;digitali&#8221;<\/strong><\/span>. Valutare se non sia possibile incontrare il collega dello stesso ufficio invece di mandare una mail o l&#8217;amico che abita a pochi passi. Considerare di inviare comunicazioni ai destinatari per cui \u00e8 davvero necessario. Non guardare video e film on line senza criterio.<\/li>\r\n<li>Utilizzare una <span style=\"color: #acc0a5;\"><strong>qualit\u00e0 dei video<\/strong><\/span> pi\u00f9 bassa.<\/li>\r\n<li>Ridurre il <strong><span style=\"color: #acc0a5;\">quantitativo di dati<\/span> <\/strong>inviati.<\/li>\r\n<li>Preferire l&#8217;<strong><span style=\"color: #acc0a5;\">inserimento diretto dell&#8217;indirizzo web<\/span> <\/strong>che ci interessa piuttosto che passare dai motori di ricerca.<\/li>\r\n<li>Prestare attenzione allo <strong><span style=\"color: #acc0a5;\">spam<\/span><\/strong>, ai siti che inviano continuamente mail cancellando l&#8217;iscrizione.<\/li>\r\n<li>Scegliere <strong><span style=\"color: #acc0a5;\">motori di ricerca<\/span><\/strong> pi\u00f9 green. Come <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecosia.org\/?c=en\">Ecosia<\/a> che almeno compensa il carbonio necessario per condurre ricerche su Internet piantando alberi. Oppure come <a href=\"http:\/\/portale.lifegate.it\/gaatle\/\">LifeGattle<\/a>, la piattaforma ambientalista creata nel 2007 dalla collaborazione tra Life Gate e Google; utilizzando una schermata 100% nera consente un\u00a0risparmio energetico.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Il <\/span>bianco<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u00a0infatti richiede un <\/span>maggior backlighting<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">, la componente pi\u00f9 energivora del monitor.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li>Considerare <span style=\"color: #acc0a5;\"><strong>data center alternativi<\/strong><\/span>. In fact, we have chosen to share news updates no more than once a month, avoiding spam and useless communications, simply using emails as a quick and direct channel to communicate with readers. And here we are thinking about what we can still do to improve. They are not choices dictated exclusively by comfort, but by the desire to reduce our environmental impact. What does all this have to do with the ecological footprint?<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>The data centers.<\/strong> <\/em>They process all internet data flows in the world. Their impact in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions is enormous and increasing. <strong>The energy used in our digital consumption will have a greater impact on global warming than the entire aviation industry.<\/strong> The amount of <strong>energy used by the data centers has doubled every four years and is expected to triple<\/strong> over the next 10 years. These changes are due in part to the broader range of everyday devices &#8211; from televisions, to home security devices, to lighting systems and countless modes of transport &#8211; which constantly emit and receive data.\u00a0(Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/jul\/17\/internet-climate-carbon-footprint-data-centres\">The Guardian<\/a>).<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>The e-mails.<\/strong><\/em> Already in 2011 an investigation by Ademe (the French agency for the environment and energy control) had brought to light <strong>the impact of each e-mail weighing only one megabyte received or sent: 19 grams of carbon dioxide.<\/strong> Considering the number of e-mails sent annually by each of us, the impact is not at all irrelevant. The messages sent are reproduced a dozen times on different servers, the more recipients we insert and the more energy is consumed, the more the e-mail is heavy and the more it will produce pollution.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Sending an e-mail<\/strong> with an attachment of 1 MB requires a consumption equal to that of a lighted bulb for 2 hours (25 watt hours), traveling often for thousands and thousands of kilometres before arriving at its destination, even if we write to someone in the our city or in our own office! Google afferma che i suoi 14 data center (che alimentano Gmail, YouTube e Search in 4 continenti) consumano il 50% in meno di energia rispetto ai data center convenzionali e, rispetto a 5 anni fa, forniscono una potenza di calcolo 7 volte maggiore con la stessa energia elettrica.\u00a0Invece, per raffreddare i server di un data center la cinese Alibaba utilizza l\u2019acqua di un lago naturale e sta valutando di realizzarre una torre del vento per raffreddare i server di un altro centro (Fonte: Greenreport). Evitare inutili sprechi &#8220;digitali&#8221;. Valutare se non sia possibile incontrare il collega dello stesso ufficio invece di mandare una mail o l&#8217;amico che abita a pochi passi. Considerare di inviare comunicazioni ai destinatari per cui \u00e8 davvero necessario. Non guardare video e film on line senza criterio. Utilizzare una qualit\u00e0 dei video pi\u00f9 bassa. Ridurre il quantitativo di dati inviati. Preferire l&#8217;inserimento diretto dell&#8217;indirizzo web che ci interessa piuttosto che passare dai motori di ricerca. Prestare attenzione allo spam, ai siti che inviano continuamente mail cancellando l&#8217;iscrizione. Scegliere motori di ricerca pi\u00f9 green. Come Ecosia che almeno compensa il carbonio necessario per condurre ricerche su Internet piantando alberi.
