Un nuovo modo di diffondere il concetto di cambiamenti climatici si sta diffondendo: il progetto non convenzionale di maglieria e uncinetto Temperature blanket (coperta termica) lo traduce nella materia fatta di fili colorati. 

Josie George ha trovato un modo per visualizzare un concetto astratto come quello del cambiamento climatico. Mettendo a frutto la sua abilità a maglia, ha iniziato creando una sciarpa in cui ogni riga rappresenta la temperatura e il clima nella sua città. Un filo colorato indica la temperatura, una seconda riga mostra se un giorno particolare è stato nuvoloso, soleggiato, piovoso o nevoso. 

“Ho deciso che quest’anno, ogni giorno, avrei lavorato a maglia una riga su una sciarpa per segnare la corrispondente temperatura/clima giornaliero della mia città. Mi è sembrato un buon modo per affrontare il cambiamento climatico e l’anno che cambia. Un modo per prestare attenzione e non distogliere lo sguardo”.

Il suo progetto pubblicato su Twitter ha ispirato tante altre persone e ognuna interpreta in modo personale il concetto del clima che si modifica nel tempo. Più spesso sono utilizzati i colori dell’arcobaleno, alcuni scelgono solo colori pastello o una tavolozza più limitata. Punti, segni, oggetti creati cambiano da persona a persona dando vita a un’individuale trasposizione della propria visione dei cambiamenti climatici nella materia.

English – Temperature blanket: colored threads to interpret the abstract concept of climate change

A new way of spreading the concept of climate change is becoming popular: the unconventional knitting and crochet project Temperature blanket translates it into the material made of colored threads.

Josie George has found a way to visualize an abstract concept such as that of climate change. By putting her knitting skills to good use, she started by creating a scarf in which each row represents the temperature and the climate in her city. A coloured thread indicates the temperature, a second line shows if a particular day has been cloudy, sunny, rainy or snowy.

“I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away”.

Her project published on Twitter has inspired many other people and each one interprets in a personal way the concept of the climate that changes over time. Rainbow colours are most often used, some choose only pastel colours or a more limited palette. Stitches, signs, created objects change from person to person, giving life to an individual transposition of one’s vision of climate change in the matter.

Vi piacerebbe molto poter essere più sostenibili partendo magari da piccole cose di uso quotidiano. Non avete però mai preso in mano un ago, né un uncinetto, né un paio di ferri per la maglia. Non vi ha insegnato nessuno, oppure sì, ci avete provato ma non avete la pazienza di creare qualcosa. Oppure anche se ne siete capaci non trovate mai tempo da dedicare.

Le alternative ci sono: acquistare nei negozi, su siti di e-commerce o su piattaforme come Etsy che riuniscono artigiani.

Immaginate ora un’altra possibilità: trovare qualcuno, magari nella stessa città per evitare l’impatto delle spedizioni, che possa creare per voi queste soluzioni più ecologiche. Ecco, è possibile e vi spieghiamo come. Tutto nasce da una richiesta di questo tipo avanzata da una lettrice di Dress Ecode, Valentina C. Vedendo un nostro post sul tutorial per realizzare stracci cattura-polvere duraturi, è partita la ricerca di chi potesse realizzarli per lei.

La reazione alla richiesta è stata davvero straordinaria, tantissime persone hanno risposto offrendosi per creare all’uncinetto i cattura-polvere. Valentina ha preferito scegliere qualcuno nella sua città, per essere più green evitando l’impatto ambientale della spedizione.

Considerando quante persone si sono proposte, abbiamo pensato di mettere insieme i riferimenti così da poter trovare qualcuno che possa cucire, lavorare a maglia o all’uncinetto per noi. E, perché no?, anche insegnare a realizzare qualcosa da soli, riprendendo quell’idea accantonata da tempo di imparare. O magari sarà anche un’occasione per conoscere qualcun altro che come noi sta cercando di ridurre il proprio impatto ambientale.

You would love to be more sustainable, starting perhaps from small everyday things. However, you never picked up a needle, a crochet hook, or a couple of knitting needles. Nobody taught you, or yes, you have tried but you don’t have the patience to create something. Or even if you are capable of it, you never find time to devote.

The alternatives are: buying in shops, on e-commerce sites or on platforms like Etsy that bring together artisans.

Now imagine another possibility: finding someone, perhaps in the same city to avoid the impact of shipping, who can create these more ecological solutions for you. Here, it is possible and we will explain how. Everything started from a request of this type put forward by a reader of Dress Ecode, Valentina C. Seeing our post on the tutorial to make long lasting dust-catching rags, the search began for who could make them for her.

The reaction to the request was truly extraordinary, many people responded by offering to crochet the dust catchers. Valentina preferred to choose someone in her city, to be greener avoiding the environmental impact of shipping.

Considering how many people have proposed themselves, we thought of putting together the references so that we could find someone who could sew, knit or crochet for us. And, why not ?, also teaching how to do something on our own, taking up that long-forgotten idea of learning. Or maybe it will also be an opportunity to get to know someone else who, like us, is trying to reduce their environmental impact.

In un’accogliente e tranquilla sala da tè romana incontro Natascia per scoprire il suo brand Mafilogia, che produce capi in cui si intrecciano fortemente artigianato, arte, moda, psicologia e letteratura.

“Il nome nasce dalla magia del filo, Ma(filo)gia, che sul telaio crea con un atto magico dove prima non c’era niente”, mi spiega Natascia. Le sue creazioni sono realizzate con il telaio, ai ferri e all’uncinetto.

Com’è iniziato l’interesse per la tessitura, non più così diffusa come in passato? “Per noia! Quando ero al liceo, un pomeriggio ero a casa di un’amica e non sapevamo cosa fare. Sua madre chiede se mi va di imparare a ricamare e, così per passare il tempo, accetto”. La prova di ricamo le piace e decide di proseguire. Nelle riviste dedicate che acquista, scopre le sezioni relative alla maglia, così si avvicina ai lavori ai ferri. Dopo qualche anno decide di iscriversi a un corso di tessitura di base e da lì sviluppa la passione per quest’arte antica. “Scopro che per me è importante il processo, non il risultato finito”. Inizia tessendo con colori diversi, cambiando spesso i fili ogni poche righe: non è una meccanica attività produttiva, Natascia si accorge del profondo coinvolgimento della propria persona nella costruzione della trama. Ogni manufatto è intriso del modo di essere, lo stato d’animo influisce sulla scelta dei colori, con la postura del corpo si entra nell’atto creativo. Scrive una tesi sul “(T)essere”, sulla riscoperta e l’affermazione della propria identità attraverso questa forma d’arte secolare. È proprio la costruzione di personalità attraverso i fili che mi affascina mentre racconta. Con l’esperienza, nel tempo, ciò che è tessuto non è più un susseguirsi di fili ma diventa per lei un vero e proprio progetto, come un’artista che crea la sua opera, in cui inevitabilmente entra parte di sé.

Mentre svolge un altro lavoro, Natascia inizia a proporre le sue creazioni in mercatini. È dopo una mostra organizzata in un’erboristeria di Frascati che decide di dedicarsi completamente alla sua passione. Maglie, manicotti, sciarpe, cappelli, colli, ponchi, nuvole (quadrati da modulare liberamente). Un esempio di progetto? “Le mantelle-albero. Ho voluto fare una dedica personale agli alberi: 5 mantelle in colori diversi, ognuna collegata a una parte differente dell’albero attraverso un’associazione psicologica. La scelta di un particolare colore, che non è mai casuale, porta a indossare sé stessi”, ciò che è richiamato dalle caratteristiche di quella determinata parte di albero. Le foglie, il cielo che si intravede attraverso le foglie,  la corteccia, la foglia gialla caduta a terra, la chioma verde.

Con il tempo Natascia ha cominciato a creare non solo a forma della propria personalità, ma anche del destinatario. Produce infatti su ordinazione, ascoltando le richieste del cliente. Quando acquistiamo un suo capo, indossiamo un pezzo di arte unico che racchiude qualcosa di noi: qualcosa che emerge mentre Natascia intreccia per noi un filo dietro l’altro in un’armonia di colori, collegati alla nostra personalità. 

“Ricordo quando mi arrivò la richiesta di realizzare una copertina  per un bimbo di una coppia thailandese, dandomi carta bianca”. “E come hai deciso in che modo crearla?”, le chiedo. “Andai a cercare in rete foto della Thailandia e mi colpì la pavimentazione di un parco, che fu la mia ispirazione: giallo, rosso al centro, ai lati blu, fucsia e viola”.

Fin dall’inizio Natascia sceglie categoricamente materiali naturali, con un forte rifiuto per ciò che è chimico. Quando possibile, utilizza filati tinti a mano. Opta per fornitori medio-piccoli, che si propongono come attenti agli animali e all’ambiente. Nei suoi capi impiega sia fibre biologiche (cotone bio), sia tradizionali. Producendo su ordinazione è possibile richiedere un particolare tipo di materiale. Utilizza anche lana, tra cui quella di alpaca e yak (che sono maggiormente sostenibili). Ci confrontiamo sui materiali scelti e resto colpita positivamente dall’attenzione con cui ascolta l’impatto del cotone tradizionale o di alcuni tipi di lana (cashmere, merino) non solo sugli animali ma anche sull’ambiente. Al punto da desiderare di approfondire di più l’aspetto della scelta delle materie prime naturali.

Una piccola anticipazione di un progetto futuro? Natascia è appassionata di libri di illustrazione (non oso chiederle quanti ne ha ma mi immagino una casa piena!), da cui trae ispirazione nei suoi lavori. “Scelgo un personaggio e mi chiedo ‘Come lo vestirei?’, inventando la tela da mettergli indosso”. A settembre partirà una sua mostra itinerante, iniziando da una libreria per bambini a Roma. Le creazioni che saranno esposte sono ispirate al libro “Pezzettino”, una bellissima storia di Leo Lionni che vi consigliamo di leggere. Influenzate dal tema della scoperta del completamento della propria identità nel trovare collocazione all’interno di un tutto/collettività, grandi sciarpe da indossare conquisteranno armoniosamente il loro posto nella composizione di tele colorate.

English – Mafilogia: the magic of a thread that on the loom, from emptiness, creates personalities by interwining

In a cosy and quiet Roman tearoom I meet Natascia to discover her brand Mafilogia, which produces garments that strongly interweave craftsmanship, art, fashion, psychology and literature.

“The name comes from the magic of thread, Ma(filo)gia, that on the loom creates with a magic act where there was nothing before”, Natascia explains to me. Her creations are made with loom, knitting and crochet.

How did the interest in weaving begin, no longer as widespread as in the past? “For boredom! When I was in high school, I was at a friend’s house one afternoon and we didn’t know what to do. Her mother asked if I would like to learn to embroider and, just in order to pass the time, I accept”. She liked the embroidery test and decided to continue. In the dedicated magazines she bought, she discovered the knitting-related sections, so she approached the knitting works. After a few years she decided to enroll in a basic weaving course and from there she developed a passion for this ancient art. “I discover that the process is important to me, not the finished result”. She began by weaving with different colors, often changing the threads every few lines: it is not a mechanical productive activity, Natascia realises the deep involvement of her person in the construction of the plot. Each handcraft is imbued with the way of being, the mood influences the choice of colours, with the posture of the body one enters the creative act. She wrote a thesis on “(T) essere” (a word joke between weaving and being), on the rediscovery and affirmation of our own identity through this secular art form. It is precisely the construction of personalities through the threads that fascinates me while she is telling. With experience, over time, what is woven is no longer a succession of threads but becomes for her a real project, like an artist who creates her work, in which inevitably part of herself enters.

While doing another job, Natascia began to propose her creations in flea markets. It is after an exhibition organised in a herbalist’s shop in Frascati that she decided to devote himself completely to her passion. Sweaters, muffs, scarves, hats, necks, ponchos, clouds (squares to be freely modulated). An example of a project? “The tree-tippets. I wanted to make a personal dedication to trees: 5 tippets in different colours, each connected to a different part of the tree through a psychological association. The choice of a particular colour, which is never random, leads to wear ourselves”, what is called by the characteristics of that particular part of the tree. The leaves, the sky that can be seen through the leaves, the bark, the yellow leaf fallen to the ground, the green foliage.

Over time Natascia began to create not only in the shape of her personality, but also of the recipient. In fact, she produces to order, listening to the customer’s requests. When we buy one of her garments, we wear a unique piece of art that contains something of us: something that emerges while Natasha weaves one thread after another for us in a harmony of colors, connected to our personality.

“I remember when I received a request to make a cover for a child of a Thai couple, giving carte blanche to me”. “And how did you decide how to create it?”, I ask her. “I went to look online for photos of Thailand and I was struck by the pavement of a park, which was my inspiration: yellow, red in the center, on the sides blue, fuchsia and violet”.

From the beginning, Natascia categorically chooses natural materials, with a strong refusal for what is chemical. Whenever possible, use hand-dyed yarns. She opts for medium-small suppliers, who propose themselves as attentive to animals and the environment. In her clothes she uses both organic (organic cotton) and traditional fibres. By making to order, you can request a particular type of material. She also uses wool, including that of alpaca and yak (which are more sustainable). We discuss the chosen materials and I am positively impressed by the attention with which I listen to the impact of traditional cotton or some types of wool (cashmere, merino) not only on animals but also on the environment. To the point of wishing to investigate more the aspect of the choice of natural raw materials.

A small preview of a future project? Natascia is passionate about illustration books (I don’t dare to ask how many she has but I imagine a full house!), from which she draws inspiration in her works. “I choose a character and I wonder ‘How would I dress him?’, inventing the canvas to wear him”. In September a traveling exhibition will start, beginning from a children’s bookstore in Rome. The creations that will be exhibited are inspired by the book “Pezzettino” (“Small piece”), a beautiful story by Leo Lionni that we suggest you to read. Influenced by the theme of discovering the completion of one’s identity in finding a place within a whole/community, large scarves to wear will harmoniously take their place in the composition of coloured canvases.

Con avanzi di filo di cotone abbiamo creato semplici spugne per lavare in modo ecologico i nostri piatti, al posto delle spugnette sintetiche! 

Riutilizzabili, lavabili, efficaci ed economiche, le spugne fatte in casa si stanno diffondendo. Sono chiamate tawashi, anche se questo termine giapponese indica una spazzola ispida in fibra vegetale, di solito marrone, tenuta insieme da fil di ferro. Queste invece sono più morbide. Possono essere create anche per il viso, per il corpo e per struccarsi. 

In internet non mancano i tutorial con le istruzioni visive da seguire passo passo. Alcune riguardano il filo in microfibra, ma sostituiamo con un filo in materiale naturale, come il cotone biologico o avanzi di gomitoli che abbiamo già in casa o ancora da strisce ricavate da una vecchia maglietta di cotone.

Basta lavarle e metterle ad asciugarle su un termosifone o all’aria aperta dopo ogni utilizzo e ogni tanto un lavaggio in lavatrice.

Durano davvero tanto e mettono allegria in cucina. Ne trovate di tutte le forme!

English: From leftovers of thread or fabric, the ecological sponges for our home!

With leftover cotton threads we have created simple sponges to wash our dishes in an ecological way, instead of using synthetic sponges!
Reusable, washable, effective and economical, homemade sponges are spreading. They are called tawashi, although this Japanese term refers to a bristly brush made of vegetable fibre, usually brown, held by a wire. These are softer instead. They can also be created for the face, body and to remove make-up.
On the internet there are many tutorials with visual instructions to follow step by step. Some relate to the microfiber thread, but we replace it with a natural material thread, such as organic cotton or balls of yarn that we already have at home or from strips made from an old cotton shirt.
Just wash them and put them to dry on a radiator or in the open air after each use and every so often a machine washing.

They last really long and bring joy to the kitchen. You can find them in all shapes!
