English: Dress Ecode’s lifestyle – We tell you about our meetings on the ‘Plastic Whale’ in schools! One of the projects we care a lot about is the Plastic Whale Heritage one. It gives us the opportunity to meet young students in Italian schools to tell about the story of a whale with a message for all of us, about the pollution we produce with plastic and about the expedition I attended last year to clean up from the waste where the whale was found. On last Friday I met in Modena 4 classes of the Galileo Galilei primary school and 5 classes of the San Geminiano primary school (of Cognento). We would like to be able to describe the faces of children when they follow what happened to the whale, their transport, the reactions of some… The story of the whale with plastic is told in the Sky documentary “A plastic whale”, which shows the discovery of this animal with a stomach full of plastic bags in an Norwegian island in 2017 and what happened after this sad episode. To the children, with videos, photos and words, of the expedition to Norway where in over 150 volunteers from over 12 countries we gathered to collect over a ton of plastic waste, in the area where the whale decided to bring the message (Click here for the video). The story allows us to deal with them, talking about seas and fish, the subject of disposable plastic, disposal times, the origin of this type of waste in the seas and small daily actions to tackle the problem of pollution. There are always so many questions, in every school they are different. Some concern the characteristics of the whale (“How long was it?”, “What was it?”, “Was it male or female?”), others the type of waste found, others the reason for our behaviour towards nature (it is the most difficult question to answer). Many are the interventions of the children who tell of having found and collected waste at sea or on the beach and those that describe what they use instead of disposable plastic objects or how they recycle them. Someone tells us of warnings to parents to avoid polluting! Friday was also the global school strike for climate day. The classes of the Galileo Galilei school went out in the courtyard to show their messages on posters. I realise that a second-grade class did something more: after the presentation they designed something on the theme of the whale. One by one they want to show their drawings and they are so wonderful that we want to show them to you here (below you will find the photos), unfortunately without being able to reveal their beautiful faces to protect their privacy. In the courtyard Margherita approaches and tells me: “You know that when you showed the whale I cried? …”. She tells us in a video (below) of his emotions. In the San Geminiano school, at the very end of the presentation, a little girl approaches. It was a moment: she hugs me very strongly and says “thank you”. She runs away and I stay there, with the heart melted, thinking how all the moments of discomfort, that we live by carrying out these projects, seem far away when you realise from the drawings that these adults of tomorrow assimilate the messages about protecting the environment, that they thank you realising the reasons of your commitment, that they are touched by the difficulties we create for animals and nature. Thanks to you, little students, for listening to the whale story! Thanks also to the teachers, sensitive to this issue and available to organize these meetings!

Vorrei guardare solo i tesori. Andare avanti leggera, a mani vuote. ENGLISH: How the walk has changed – Dress ECOde’s lifestyle Personally I find that walking helps to restore contact with the surrounding environment, to slow down, to look around. I could stay well without it. Especially at sea, even in winter on beautiful sunny days that in the south more south of Italy are not lacking. Immense spaces where the eye relaxes at the sight of shimmering dunes, bright waters and deep blue everywhere, without boundaries between sky and sea. Strolling barefoot most of the time, feel good about looking at that sun and that blue and playing to find what the sea offers on the water’s edge. Shells, algae, strange insects, pebbles, jellyfish, spiraling animal dens, small sticks, hermit crabs, branches, pumice stones and other natural surprises. A game that has always fascinated me. But something has changed. Since the beginning of this path of greater responsibility towards the environment, among the gifts of the sea the attention has begun to move also on other objects that are not gifts: caps, glasses, bottles, wrappers, fishing nets, pieces of slippers , cigarette butts, fragments of paper and plastic, iron wires, pipes and many other things that we give to nature… Also this time, as soon as we arrive, we want to set foot on this beautiful beach for the usual walk to the sea. I go out with the curiosity to see how the landscape has changed this season. The wind, the currents and the tides shape dunes, shoreline and expanse of water. It’s so much the craving that I remember of the bags and gloves to collect the waste only once on the beach… I start walking, with the game of the search for treasures, but there is nothing to do: you can not leave those polluting intruders there! Fortunately, there is no shortage of pockets in winter, so you can store exceptionally small treasures (such as stones, twigs and empty shells, often putting them back at the beach) and keep your hands free to collect the worst waste. I walk, I look at the blue, the sun, the treasures and at the same time clean up that wonderful corner to thank it for the show he offers. Yes, I would like sometimes to just put one foot after the other and that is enough, sometimes at a fast pace as a daily sport session. I would like to look only at the treasures. Going forward lightly, with empty hands. Something inside, however, makes you stoop, gather and clean, under the eyes of those few people who cross in winter: they see you walking with your hands full of bottles, plastic cups and cans. Or, as from the day after finally equipped, they see you with full bags wondering who knows what you’re pulling up with so much zeal. I can not leave the polluting human traces there. I can not. I imagine a fish, a jellyfish, a little bird that engulfs a waste. As if on the floor of the house, mine or of those who host me, I accepted rubbish strewn here and there. I can not. And I like to think that it is so for many other people, that it is normal and trivial to write. So banal that those who are now reading think: “What a foregone thing to write, I always collect, what a newness”. Isn’t it? PS On the cover one of the beautiful dunes. Below, some photos of the last “booty” (@allrightsreserved).

Since the beginning of this path of greater responsibility towards the environment, among the gifts of the sea the attention has begun to move also on other objects that are not gifts: caps, glasses, bottles, wrappers, fishing nets, pieces of slippers , cigarette butts, fragments of paper and plastic, iron wires, pipes and many other things that we give to nature…

Also this time, as soon as we arrive, we want to set foot on this beautiful beach for the usual walk to the sea.

English: Useful bottles…and unuseful trips! Dress ECOde’s lifestyle This time the bike ride is to recharge the bottle of dishwashing detergent. For some time now it has been running out and you can not postpone it: I plan to go to the store to re-fill it on Saturday morning. I wake up early and decide to walk instead of taking the bike. The shop is located more than 2 km from the house, about half an hour uphill and downhill, a good opportunity to combine daily sports with the house needs! I go out wholeheartedly, backpacking, direct to fill the reusable bottle and to buy a couple of other things. I walk humming, when more than halfway… I realize I forgot the bottle at home! (maybe it is also Saturday for the neuron, which rightly requires a day of rest). At this point I decide to proceed to the store, in order to buy in the meantime what I had in mind, and just to not have that feeling of a trip in vain. But there comes the challenge, always lurking, ready to test those who try every day to live in a more sustainable way: comfort! The temptation to buy a new dishwashing detergent is not irrelevant. I can put the new product in the basket and go to the cashier, very simple. Without having to go back to the store again. I admit to thinking and re-thinking about it, crossing the lanes of the organic shop up to the cash desk, I admit it… As long as I won laziness and accepted to lose about an hour more, I went out without courage and headed home reflecting: an extra hour for one plastic bottle less. Can it sound like madness? It’s because when I think of the tons of plastic seen on the coast I can not do it, I can not feel good if I prefer a little comfort to a piece of plastic more. I go home, I leave what I bought and… I go back to get the bike! (You will not believe it but I remembered the bottle at the front door, risking a second useless trip!). I return to the store by pedaling quickly, while the mind elaborates how to recover what I had to do that morning. I arrive at the distributor: the detergent is finished. Then you reflect on the injustices of the world, how it is possible that you commit yourself to reduce your ecological footprint and the universe thanks you in this way. With kindness I ask the manager: “Hello, to refill the bottle, please how does it work?”. At that exact moment he remembers not having reordered the detergent … but with great availability he tries to fill it with what was left in the dispenser: 10 minutes to succeed to bring down the last remaining product, almost a drop at a time. In the end, however, we obtain a liter of detergent! Also helping to eliminate any waste: nothing remained in the distributor. During tapping at reduced speed, conversing about products on tap, the manager tells me that they have just started to sell tea and herbal teas to be bought in bulk as in herbal shops. “Very good! So far there were only packs with filters”. I pock my nose into the counter: “But … you put them in plastic bags!”. We then involve also a clerk, kindly welcoming the innocent note and offering availability to fill containers brought from home or, in their absence, in paper bags.

English: Useful bottles…and unuseful trips! Dress ECOde’s lifestyle

This time the bike ride is to recharge the bottle of dishwashing detergent.
The result? 114 plastic fibres on average in a meal. The test was defined with the purpose of verifying the amount of plastics in mussels consumed in household meals. One of the evidences: a person can consume on average 100 plastic particles a year eating shellfishes. He will instead eat between 13,000 and 68,000 fibres a year during his meals due to household dusts! It is estimated by the researchers that dusts from soft furnishings and synthetic fabrics settle on the dishes, not coming mainly from food. The same dusts are also breathed. They can come from car tires, carpets, soft furnishings and also from clothes such as fleece jackets and other synthetic garment. More detailed studies are of course interesting and necessary at this point in order to better understand the plastic pollution phenomena and its effects on human health.
(Elle by Teresa Carrer; https://www.elle.com/…/a173710/glitter-danneggiano-ambiente/)

Glitter is microplastic. It can be eaten by animals.
An alternative? Biodegradable glitter.

Lush products contain biodegradable glitter.

“Glitter sticks not only to skin, but they become embedded in clothes going then into the washing machine and so in waste water”, “An original idea and environmental friendly could be to produce glitter from sugar and cake colouring. The sparkling and coloured effect is the same and they can be put on face without danger for the skin. And there is no clue of pollution” (Elle by Teresa Carrer; https://www.elle.com/…/a173710/glitter-danneggiano-ambiente/).

“Most of glitters are composed by a mixture of aluminium and plastic called PET. It has been discovered that PET releases chemical agents, involved in onset of heavy diseases”(TPI news; https://www.tpi.it/…/12/05/divieto-glitter-secondo-scienzi…/).
