Questa volta il giro in bici è per ricaricare il flacone di detersivo per i piatti. Da un po’ di tempo è ormai agli sgoccioli e non si può più rimandare: sabato mattina programmo di andare in negozio per riempirlo.

Sveglia presto e la decisione di camminare, invece di prendere la bicicletta. Il negozio si trova a più di 2 km da casa, circa mezz’ora di percorso in salita e in discesa, una buona occasione per unire lo sport quotidiano alle necessità di casa! Esco tutta contenta, zaino in spalla, diretta a riempire il flacone riutilizzabile e ad acquistare un paio di altre cose. Cammino canticchiando, quando a più di metà strada… realizzo di aver dimenticato il flacone a casa! (forse è sabato anche per il neurone, che richiede giustamente un giorno di riposo).

A questo punto decido di proseguire per il negozio, per comprare intanto ciò che avevo in mente, giusto per non avere quella sensazione di viaggio a vuoto. Ma arriva la sfida, sempre in agguato, pronta a mettere alla prova chi cerca ogni giorno di vivere in modo più sostenibile: la comodità! La tentazione di acquistare un detersivo per i piatti non è da poco. Metto nel cestino e vado alla cassa, semplicissimo. Senza dover tornare un’altra volta al negozio. Ammetto di averci pensato e ripensato attraversando le corsie del punto vendita bio fino alla cassa, lo ammetto… Finché vincendo la pigrizia e accettando di perdere circa un’ora in più della giornata, con coraggio sono uscita senza e mi sono diretta a casa riflettendo: un’ora in più per un flacone in meno di plastica. Può sembrare una follia? È che quando penso alle tonnellate di plastica viste sulle coste proprio non ce la faccio, non riesco a sentirmi bene se preferisco una piccola comodità a un pezzo di plastica in più.

Salgo in casa, lascio quanto acquistato e… ri-scendo per prendere la bici! (Non ci crederete ma mi sono ricordata del flacone davanti alla porta di casa, rischiando un secondo viaggio a vuoto!).

Ritorno al negozio pedalando velocemente, mentre la mente elabora come recuperare ciò che dovevo fare quella mattina.

Arrivo al distributore: il detersivo è finito. Rifletti allora sulle ingiustizie del mondo, su come sia possibile che ti impegni per ridurre la tua impronta ecologica e l’universo così ti ringrazi. Con gentilezza chiedo al gestore: “Buongiorno, per ricaricare il flacone per favore come si fa?”. In quell’istante si rammenta di non aver riordinato il detersivo… ma con grande disponibilità cerca di riempirlo con ciò che è rimasto nel distributore: 10 minuti per riuscire a far scendere l’ultimo residuo di prodotto, quasi una goccia alla volta. Alla fine però arriviamo a un litro di detergente! Contribuendo anche ad annullare ogni spreco, nulla è rimasto nel distributore.

Durante la spillatura a velocità ridotta, conversando di prodotti alla spina, il gestore mi racconta che hanno appena messo in vendita tè e tisane da acquistare sfusi come in erboristeria. “Benissimo! Finora c’erano solo confezioni con filtri”. Vado subito a ficcare il naso al bancone: “Ma… li mettete nelle bustine di plastica!”. Coinvolgiamo anche una commessa, gentilmente accolgono l’innocente appunto e offrono disponibilità a riempire contenitori portati da casa o, in assenza, sacchettini di carta. Il viaggio in più al negozio almeno è servito a qualcosa

This time the bike ride is to recharge the bottle of dishwashing detergent. For some time now it has been running out and you can not postpone it: I plan to go to the store to re-fill it on Saturday morning.
I wake up early and decide to walk instead of taking the bike. The shop is located more than 2 km from the house, about half an hour uphill and downhill, a good opportunity to combine daily sports with the house needs! I go out wholeheartedly, backpacking, direct to fill the reusable bottle and to buy a couple of other things. I walk humming, when more than halfway… I realize I forgot the bottle at home! (maybe it is also Saturday for the neuron, which rightly requires a day of rest).
At this point I decide to proceed to the store, in order to buy in the meantime what I had in mind, and just to not have that feeling of a trip in vain. But there comes the challenge, always lurking, ready to test those who try every day to live in a more sustainable way: comfort! The temptation to buy a new dishwashing detergent is not irrelevant. I can put the new product in the basket and go to the cashier, very simple. Without having to go back to the store again. I admit to thinking and re-thinking about it, crossing the lanes of the organic shop up to the cash desk, I admit it… As long as I won laziness and accepted to lose about an hour more, I went out without courage and headed home reflecting: an extra hour for one plastic bottle less. Can it sound like madness? It’s because when I think of the tons of plastic seen on the coast I can not do it, I can not feel good if I prefer a little comfort to a piece of plastic more.
I go home, I leave what I bought and… I go back to get the bike! (You will not believe it but I remembered the bottle at the front door, risking a second useless trip!).
I return to the store by pedaling quickly, while the mind elaborates how to recover what I had to do that morning.
I arrive at the distributor: the detergent is finished. Then you reflect on the injustices of the world, how it is possible that you commit yourself to reduce your ecological footprint and the universe thanks you in this way. With kindness I ask the manager: “Hello, to refill the bottle, please how does it work?”. At that exact moment he remembers not having reordered the detergent … but with great availability he tries to fill it with what was left in the dispenser: 10 minutes to succeed to bring down the last remaining product, almost a drop at a time. In the end, however, we obtain a liter of detergent! Also helping to eliminate any waste: nothing remained in the distributor.
During tapping at reduced speed, conversing about products on tap, the manager tells me that they have just started to sell tea and herbal teas to be bought in bulk as in herbal shops. “Very good! So far there were only packs with filters”. I pock my nose into the counter: “But … you put them in plastic bags!”. We then involve also a clerk, kindly welcoming the innocent note and offering availability to fill containers brought from home or, in their absence, in paper bags. The extra trip to the store at least was useful for something;)

Un ricordo: un anno fa a New York. Tenevo molto a vedere questo negozio plastic-free, di una ragazza newyorkese che seguo da anni, ed eccoci qui!

Un negozio in cui è possibile trovare tante alternative interessanti per vivere senza plastica e in generale per ridurre la produzione di rifiuti. Resterete stupiti scoprendo quanti oggetti di uso comune contengono plastica o creano rifiuti inquinanti. Un esempio? I tradizionali cerotti! Possiamo sostituirli con un analogo prodotto composto al 100% da fibra di bambù biologico. La custodia per il cellulare, il fermaporta, gli accessori per i nostri amici a quattro zampe, il pelapatate e tante altre idee ecologiche.

Qui si portano le buste da casa. Qui non si stampano scontrini (arrivano via mail). Qui si possono seguire tanti work-shop interessanti. Qui si riflette sull’impatto dei propri acquisti. Qui si realizza quali oggetti di plastica si possono evitare!

ENGLISH: Visiting the Package Free Shop!

Sharing a memory: last year in New York. I was keen to visit this plastic-free shop, managed by a NY girl I’m following since a long time and… here we are!

A shop where you can find interesting alternatives to live without plastics and to reduce waste production. You’ll be surprised discovering how many daily-use objects contain plastics or create polluting waste. An example? Traditional band-aids! We can replace them with a similar product made by 100% organic bamboo fibre. The cellular case, the doorstop, the accessories for our pet friends, the vegetable peeler and other many ecological ideas.

Here we bring our shopping bag from home. Here tickets are not printed (you receive them by e-mail). Here it is possible to participate to interesting workshops. Here we reflect on the impact of our purchases. Here we realise which plastic objects we can avoid!

Uno studio dell’Università Heriot-Watt ha misurato la quantità di plastica contenuta nei pasti serali in alcune abitazioni del Regno Unito. Il risultato? 114 fibre di plastica mediamente in un piatto.
L’esperimento era nato con l’intenzione di verificare la quantità di plastica nelle cozze consumate nei pasti casalinghi. Una delle evidenze emerse: mediamente una persona può consumare 100 particelle di plastica all’anno mangiando i molluschi. Ingerirà invece tra le 13mila e le 68mila fibre in un anno attraverso i pasti per via delle polveri domestiche!

I ricercatori ipotizzano che sui piatti si depositino polveri da arredamento in tessuto e da stoffe sintetiche, non tanto dal cibo. Le stesse polveri non sono solo ingerite ma anche respirate.
Possono provenire da pneumatici, tappeti, arredamento in tessuto e anche dagli abiti come le giacche di pile e altri indumenti sintetici.

Sono di certo interessanti e necessari a questo punto studi di approfondimento per capire meglio il fenomeno dell’inquinamento dalla plastica e gli effetti sulla salute dell’uomo.

Dress Ecode si impegna fortemente nel promuovere una scelta di tessuti e indumenti più sostenibili, per ridurre le conseguenze dannose sull’ambiente e sulla salute.

A Heriot-Watt University study has measured the amount of plastics in dinner meals at some UK houses. The result? 114 plastic fibres on average in a meal.
The test was defined with the purpose of verifying the amount of plastics in mussels consumed in household meals. One of the evidences: a person can consume on average 100 plastic particles a year eating shellfishes. He will instead eat between 13,000 and 68,000 fibres a year during his meals due to household dusts!

It is estimated by the researchers that dusts from soft furnishings and synthetic fabrics settle on the dishes, not coming mainly from food. The same dusts are also breathed.
They can come from car tires, carpets, soft furnishings and also from clothes such as fleece jackets and other synthetic garment.

More detailed studies are of course interesting and necessary at this point in order to better understand the plastic pollution phenomena and its effects on human health.
