Una pizza che è la più buona di Roma seguita da un tiramisù, un’amica di eventi in bicicletta, una storia di riciclo e la magia del legno: cosa chiedere di più da un’intervista? Incontro a cena Antonella (Costantini), architetto che sogna di occuparsi di scenografia, magari in teatro, e sappiamo creerebbe speciali ambientazioni da lasciare a bocca aperta. È creativa, acuta, piena di immaginazione e gusto estetico. Mi cucì anni fa un bellissimo papillon, utilizzando le rimanenze del tessuto dell’abito da sposa di sua mamma. Non poteva che riuscire a trasformare pezzi di legno buttati e pallet rovinati in qualcosa di magico!

Antonella disegna figure meravigliose su tavole di legno recuperato, poi scartavetra, pialla, taglia, incastra, colora. Nel suo laboratorio chiude il mondo fuori e ridona vita agli scarti. Dalle sue mani nascono super eroi, pesci, capitani, razzi, ciclisti, fiori, gatti, cactus, personaggi e tutto ciò che le forme del legno la ispirano. Sono da appendere, da appoggiare o da attaccare quelli che inglobano una calamita.

Come hai iniziato l’avventura di Rilegno?

“Ero in vacanza, era il 20 agosto 2016 ed era il compleanno di mia sorella ma non avevo soldi per farle un regalo. Avevamo visto in un negozio un pesce di legno che a mia sorella piaceva, allora mi è venuta l’idea di farle un regalo con le mie mani. Non avevo un lavoro, ma avevo tempo. Così è nata la balena con Pinocchio dentro. Mi è piaciuto talmente tanto trasformare un’idea in qualcosa di materiale che non ho più smesso“.

Bellissimo! Ma come hai cominciato materialmente? Sapevi già tagliare il legno e dargli forma?

“No, non sapevo fare nulla. Ho chiesto a mio padre di usare i suoi attrezzi che tiene in cantina e qualche consiglio. Ho preso il seghetto alternativo, la sega a mano, la scartavetratrice, il morsetto e mi sono messa al lavoro. Papà mi ha dato il seghetto dicendomi ‘Si fa così. Fai piano che si rompe la lama’. Ne ho rotte 4 o 5! Ho imparato con l’esperienza“. 

Quali materiali utilizzi per le tue creazioni? Da dove vengono?

“Non compro mai il legno, il primo lavoro è nato così. Non ha senso comprare qualcosa per distruggere. Trovo il legno per strada. Cerco tavole con lo spessore giusto. Quando trovo un pezzo con venature bellissime, lo lascio lì anche per 6-7 mesi senza farci nulla, in attesa di essere trasformato in qualcosa. Il Capitano per esempio è nato perché dopo i Ciclisti volevo fare una serie di personaggi. Scarabocchiando è venuto fuori, ma non sapevo come disegnare l’occhio. A un certo punto è comparso un pezzo di legno che aveva una macchia bella, quello è diventato l’occhio!  Trovo i materiali vicino ai secchi dei rifiuti. Ne trovi talmente tanti, di qualsiasi forma e legno: abete, pino, ogni tanto se sono fortunata trovo i cubetti in faggio che sono i più belli, hanno venature pazzesche anche se non profumano come l’abete. Vecchie finestre buttate, infissi, sottomisure recuperate dai cantieri, tavole di legno gettate in un mucchio a un certo punto diventano un oggetto. Utilizzo anche ferramenta: vecchi chiavistelli, chiavi, maniglie. E poi rotoli di carta per disegnare, matitone, colori e colla vinilica”. 

Da dove trai ispirazione?

“Vedo qualcosa che mi piace, magari non c’entra niente con il legno e mi viene l’idea. Proprio perché è qualcosa di esperienzale mi diverte capire se in legno quella cosa si può fare, così come l’ho vista. Realizzo un pezzo unico, non lavoro più ‘in serie’. Dopo l’esperienza dei mercatini in cui dovevo preparare tanti pezzi simili, ho deciso di no. Vedo una sagoma che mi piace in stoffa, un elemento d’arredo, provo a riprodurre in legno e diventano un altro oggetto. Le ultime cose che ho fatto mi piacciono talmente tanto che fatico a venderle e lasciarle andare…”.

E i super eroi? Come sono nati?

“Avevo trovato il legno di alcune finestre, si lavorava molto bene. Dovevo andare a cena da mia cugina e mia sorella Marta mi chiede: ‘Perché non fai qualcosa per Leonardo?’, che è mio nipote. ‘In mezza giornata cosa vuoi che faccia?’, le ho risposto ma poi ho cominciato a tagliare pezzi. Ed è uscito un super eroe! Ho preso una scatola e l’ho inserito smontato. Leo apre il pacco, vede i pezzi e dice subito ‘Iron Man!”. In 5 secondi l’ha montato. 7 incastri ma un bimbo di 2-3 anni che monta da solo qualcosa è una soddisfazione… Successivamente ho creato Spiderman, Capitan America e Batman. Per quest’ultimo ho realizzato una scatola speciale. Non ne ho più creati perché sono difficili da tenere nel tempo montati perfettamente, il legno in pallet si modifica, si asciuga, cambia forma”.

C’è qualche sfida che ti trovi ad affrontare proponendo creazioni artigianali?

“Non è semplice riuscire a vendere pezzi di artigianato. Ho provato a passare per i negozi di design, offrono poco perché vendono pezzi magari fatti industrialmente in serie. Mi sono sentita dire una volta ‘Ma cosa ti importa di fare le cose a mano? Tu fai il disegno, lo mandi in Cina, te ne fanno mille, lo vendi a meno e fai tanti soldi!’. Così sembra artigianale ma non lo è… No! Il lavoro fatto a mano è ciò che mi dà soddisfazione. Proviene dalla manualità di mio papa e di mio nonno. E dall’insegnante di educazione artistica che avevo alle medie: è stato importantissimo, mi ha fatto usare le mani e ho capito che si poteva fare. Mi dispiace che le persone non si rendano conto di che cosa sono fatte le cose. Mi è capitato una volta a un mercatino, si sono avvicinati dei bambini incuriositi dagli oggetti che avevo creato e i genitori mi hanno chiesto ‘Di cosa sono fatti?’, dopo averli presi in mano e nonostante il cartello ‘Rilegno’… Continuo per la curiosità dei bambini, per i loro occhi che si illuminano quando vedono una cosa che li attira. Mi fa tanto piacere quando sono le mie creazioni a incuriosirli, è questo che mi fa andar avanti“. 

Partecipi a fiere e mercatini?

“Scelgo pochi eventi, non mi importa di vendere, di guadagnarci sopra ma solo che qualcuno compri qualcosa che davvero vuole tenere a casa. Le fiere sono belle per il clima che si crea con altri artigiani e ti viene voglia di fare di più. È come fare un viaggio in un altro mondo, gira tutto intorno alla creatività”. 

La balena, Wall-E, l’astronauta,  le kokeshi, i Ciclisti sono tra i miei preferiti ma è davvero difficile scegliere le foto da mostrarvi qui (per questo vi consiglio di dare un’occhiata al suo account su Instagram e su Facebook). Tra i suoi oggetti mi perdo e sogno a occhi aperti. E poi c’è il faro, che Antonella ha costruito per me qualche anno fa. Non è un faro qualsiasi. È quello di Peggy’s Point, Canada, con quei colori. È lì sulla finestra nella camera da letto, con la barchetta che tra le onde ha ancorato in porto seguendo la sua luce.

“Un lavoro comincia dall’ispirazione. 

Era da tempo che volevo realizzare un faro ma non riuscivo a concepire l’idea che fosse la riproduzione spasmodica dei fari da souvenir estivi.

Poi è arrivata lei, una ragazza con la A. maiuscola che mi ha detto: ‘Ho sempre adorato i fari’ e mi ha spiegato che era bello pensare al faro come simbolo della vita come approdo sicuro, di speranza e di sogni riposti in un cassetto manco troppo chiuso.

Il fatto è che A. adesso ha una barchetta a vela e deve a tutti i costi approdare, lei ancora non lo sa ma c’è anche un piccolo molo che la attende per ancorare il suo navigare.

Ecco signorina A. questo è il nostro faro a metà (tu lo sogni e io lo realizzo sognando) ed è il più bello che io potrò mai realizzare per nessun altro”.

English – Rilegno: the magic laboratory where Antonella Costantini transforms waste into wonders

A pizza that is the best in Rome followed by a tiramisu, a friend of cycling events, a story of recycling and the magic of wood: what more could you ask for from an interview? At dinner I meet Antonella (Costantini), an architect who dreams of dealing with set design, perhaps in the theater, and we know she would create special settings to be amazed. It is creative, acute, full of imagination and aesthetic taste. Years ago she sewed a beautiful bow tie for me, using the fabric scraps of her mom’s wedding dress. She could only manage to turn thrown pieces of wood and damaged pallets into something magical!

Antonella draws marvelous figures on reclaimed wooden boards, then she sands, planes, cuts, fits, paints. In her laboratory she closes the world outside and gives life back to waste. From her hands are born super heroes, fish, captains, rockets, cyclists, flowers, cats, cacti, characters and all that the shapes of wood inspire her. They can be hung, placed or attached with a magnet.

How did you start the adventure of Rilegno?

“I was on vacation, it was the 20th of August 2016, my sister’s birthday, but I had no money to give her a gift. We had seen a wooden fish in a shop that my sister liked, so I had the idea of ​​giving her a gift with my hands. I didn’t have a job, but I had time. Thus was born the whale with Pinocchio inside. I liked it so much to turn an idea into something material that I never stopped“.

Very beautifull! But how did you start materially? Did you already know how to cut wood and shape it?

“No, I didn’t know how to do anything. I asked my father to use his tools he keeps in the cellar and some advice. I took the jig saw, the hand saw, the sander, the clamp and went to work. Dad gave me the hacksaw saying ‘This is how to do. Be careful that the blade breaks”, I have broken 4 or 5 of them! I’ve learned through experience“.

What materials do you use for your creations? Where do they come from?

“I never buy wood, the first craft was born like this. There is no point in buying something to destroy it. I find wood on the street. I am looking for boards with the right thickness. When I find a piece with beautiful veins, I leave it there even for 6-7 months without doing anything, waiting to be transformed into something. For example, the Captain was born because after the Cyclists I wanted to make a series of characters. Scribbling, it came out but I didn’t know how to draw the eye. At a certain point a piece of wood appeared that had a beautiful stain, that one became the eye! I find the materials near the garbage pails. You find so many, of any shape and wood: fir, pine, occasionally if I am lucky I find the beech cubes that are the most beautiful ones, they have crazy veins, even if they do not smell like fir. Old thrown windows, frames, sub-measures recovered from construction sites, wooden cubes thrown in a pile at some point become an object. I also use hardware: old bolts, keys, handles. And then rolls of paper to draw, a big pencil, colors and vinyl glue”.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

“I see something I like, maybe it has nothing to do with wood and I get the idea. Precisely because it is something experiential it amuses me to understand if that thing can be done in wood as I saw it. I make a unique piece, I no longer work ‘in series’. After the experience of the markets where I had to prepare many similar pieces, I decided not. I see a shape that I like in fabric, a piece of furniture, I try to reproduce it in wood and they become another object. I like the last things I did so much that I struggle to sell them and let them go… “.

And the super heroes? How were they born?

“I had found the wood of some windows, it could be worked very well. I had to go to dinner with my cousin and my sister Marta asks me: ‘Why don’t you do something for Leonardo?’, who is my nephew. ‘In half a day what do you want me to do?’, I replied but then I started cutting pieces. And a super hero has come out! I took a box and inserted it unassembled. Leo opens the package, sees the pieces and immediately says ‘Iron Man!’. In 5 seconds he mounted it. 7 joints but a 2-3 year old boy who mounts something on his own is a satisfaction… Later I created Spiderman, Captain America and Batman. For the latter, I made a special box. I no longer created them because they are difficult to keep perfectly assembled over time, the pallet wood changes, dries, modifies its shape”.

Is there any challenge that you face by proposing handmade creations?

“It is not easy to be able to sell pieces of craftsmanship. I tried to go through the design stores, they offer little because they sell pieces that may be industrially made in series. Someone said to me: ‘But what do you care about doing things by hand? You do the drawing, send it to China, make it a thousand, sell it for less and make a lot of money!’. So it seems artisanal but it is not… No! Handmade work is what gives me satisfaction. It comes from the manual skills of my dad and my grandfather. And from the teacher of art education I had in middle school: it was very important, he made me use my hands and I understood that it could be done. I’m sorry that people don’t realize what things are made of. It happened to me once at a market, children intrigued by the objects I had created approached and the parents asked me ‘What are they made of?’, after picking them up and despite the sign ‘Rilegno’… I continue for the curiosity of children, for their eyes that light up when they see something that attracts them. It makes me so happy when my creations intrigue them, that’s what keeps me going“.

Do you participate in fairs and markets?

“I choose a few events, I don’t care to sell, to earn on it but only for someone to buy something he/she really wants to keep at home. The fairs are beautiful for the climate that is created with other craftsmen and you want to do more. It’s like taking a trip to another world, it’s all about creativity”.

The whale, Wall-E, the astronaut, the kokeshi, the Cyclists are among my favorites but it is really difficult to choose the photos to show you here (for this reason I recommend you take a look at her account on Instagram and on Facebook). Among her objects I get lost and daydream. And then there is the lighthouse, which Antonella built for me a few years ago. It is not just any lighthouse. It is that of Peggy’s Point, Canada, with those colors. It is there on the window in the bedroom, with the boat that anchored among the waves in the port following its light.

“A work begins with inspiration.

It was a long time since I wanted to make a lighthouse but I could not conceive the idea that it was the spasmodic reproduction of the headlights from summer souvenirs.

Then she came, a girl with a capital A. She said to me: ‘I have always loved headlights’ and explained to me that it was nice to think of the lighthouse as a symbol of life as a safe haven, of hope and dreams placed in a drawer not too closed.

The fact is that A. now has a little sailing boat and must at all costs land, it still does not know it but there is also a small pier waiting for it to anchor its sailing.

Here is Miss A. this is our half lighthouse (you dream it and I make it dreaming) and it is the most beautiful that I can ever make for anyone else”.

Con avanzi di filo di cotone abbiamo creato semplici spugne per lavare in modo ecologico i nostri piatti, al posto delle spugnette sintetiche! 

Riutilizzabili, lavabili, efficaci ed economiche, le spugne fatte in casa si stanno diffondendo. Sono chiamate tawashi, anche se questo termine giapponese indica una spazzola ispida in fibra vegetale, di solito marrone, tenuta insieme da fil di ferro. Queste invece sono più morbide. Possono essere create anche per il viso, per il corpo e per struccarsi. 

In internet non mancano i tutorial con le istruzioni visive da seguire passo passo. Alcune riguardano il filo in microfibra, ma sostituiamo con un filo in materiale naturale, come il cotone biologico o avanzi di gomitoli che abbiamo già in casa o ancora da strisce ricavate da una vecchia maglietta di cotone.

Basta lavarle e metterle ad asciugarle su un termosifone o all’aria aperta dopo ogni utilizzo e ogni tanto un lavaggio in lavatrice.

Durano davvero tanto e mettono allegria in cucina. Ne trovate di tutte le forme!

English: From leftovers of thread or fabric, the ecological sponges for our home!

With leftover cotton threads we have created simple sponges to wash our dishes in an ecological way, instead of using synthetic sponges!
Reusable, washable, effective and economical, homemade sponges are spreading. They are called tawashi, although this Japanese term refers to a bristly brush made of vegetable fibre, usually brown, held by a wire. These are softer instead. They can also be created for the face, body and to remove make-up.
On the internet there are many tutorials with visual instructions to follow step by step. Some relate to the microfiber thread, but we replace it with a natural material thread, such as organic cotton or balls of yarn that we already have at home or from strips made from an old cotton shirt.
Just wash them and put them to dry on a radiator or in the open air after each use and every so often a machine washing.

They last really long and bring joy to the kitchen. You can find them in all shapes!

Camminando al mercato Monti (di Roma) ci fermiamo all’improvviso perché sembra di entrare dentro una fiaba: lampade uscite dalla mente fantasiosa di qualcuno che con occhi di bambino le ha create e che se hai occhi di bambino puoi apprezzare. Per un attimo mi è parso di ritrovarmi a parlare con una di queste ironiche creature luminose, ricordando le conversazioni notturne di Amélie (Il favoloso mondo di Amelie) con la sua abat-jour! Queste lampade, ne avrebbero di storie da raccontare…

Vi narrerebbero di come sono nate da Art Cocò unendo dadi, rondelle, vecchi ottoni, barre filettate, portalampade, pulsantini, porcellana, ceramica, legno e scatole di latta spesso dimenticate in polverose soffitte.

Vi mostrerebbero uno a uno i loro pezzi raccontandovene l’origine, orgogliose della loro nascita ecologica e della loro storia che a sua volta racchiude tanti racconti quanti i loro componenti: tutti oggetti destinati all’immondizia, puliti, rivisti e trasformati invece in sbalorditive creazioni dalle idee e dalle mani abili di Grazia Cecconi e Angela Iacobellis.

“Sulla barra costruiamo una storia”. Mi fermerei lì ad ascoltarle raccontare.

“Il braccio di un vecchio lampadario può diventare lo stelo di una lampada da tavolo, sfere di vetro sopravvissute al declino di lampadari di murano nidi per uccelli, e vecchie scatole di latta, la base di appoggio per cani e gatti in porcellana o facce anni ’40 di ragazzini impertinenti”. “Intanto piume, passamanerie e vecchie stoffe in seta liberano dall’anonimato ventole e paralumi troppo spesso noiosamente beige”.

Ogni componente è riciclato, nulla è nuovo. “A parte le nostre idee, un trapano a colonna, un piccolo frullino con dischi a ceramica ferro e plastica, tantissime frese, pinzette, tenaglie cacciaviti, e tutta la fantasia. Singoli elementi nelle nostre mani diventano progetto”.

Ecco come la fantasia può salvare l’ambiente.

Com’è nato il progetto Art Cocò? E come nascono queste lampade?

“Siamo 2 designer, abituate ad impaginare segni e immagini nello spazio. Abituate anche al montaggio video, un’alternanza ritmica, che non deve mai annoiare. Aggiungi che la pubblicità e il design ti abituano a veder realizzati in breve tempo i progetti creativi. Ti insegnano ad amare video e immagini vintage (pensa alla fotografia americana dagli anni ’30 ai ‘50) ed a mischiare queste vecchie immagini a segni moderni per ‘definire’ messaggi nuovi ed inattesi. Da qui, il passo è breve. Basta aggiungere la manualità alla progettazione e nascono oggetti, lampade nel nostro caso, che rispettano tutto l’iter creativo del messaggio pubblicitario. Per questo le lampade Art Cocò hanno un nome. Perché ognuna di esse è una storia nell’ambito della quale è possibile riconoscersi.

Una storia che fa leva sulle emozioni, sui ricordi, con l’obiettivo a volte di strappare un sorriso. Una storia che spesso  guida la ricerca di oggetti, un grande lavoro fatto di mercatini, robivecchi, cantine, e vecchie zie.

Ma vale anche tutto il contrario. A volte vedi un oggetto, un vecchio lampadario, una testa di porcellana e immagini quale lampada potrebbe diventare e quale nome potrebbe avere.

Poi c’è la bellezza di riciclare tutto, fino all’ultimo dado, di non produrre niente e usare solo materiali già esistenti spesso rotti o dimenticati. Un vero restyling di forme e materie”.

Da Art Cocò niente è fatto in serie e non esiste lampada uguale all’altra perché la progettazione inizia dallo smontaggio di vecchi lampadari o dal ritrovamento di una magnifica scatola in latta con tanto di decorazione, forma e colore.

English – In the fabulous world of Art Cocò’s bright creatures: when imagination saves the environment!

Walking at the Monti market (in Rome), we suddenly stop because it seems to enter into a fairy tale: lamps come out of the imaginative mind of someone who created them with childlike eyes and that can be appreciated if you have child eyes. For a moment it seemed to me to find myself talking to one of these ironic luminous creatures, remembering the nocturnal conversations of Amélie (Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain English) with her abat-jour! These lamps, they would have stories to tell for sure…

They would tell you how they were born from Art Cocò by combining nuts, washers, old brass, threaded rods, lamp holders, small buttons, porcelain, ceramic, wood and tin boxes often forgotten in dusty attics. They would show their pieces one by one telling you their origin, proud of their ecological birth and their history, which in turn contains as many stories as their components: all objects destined for garbage, cleaned, revised and transformed into stunning creations by the ideas and skillful hands of Grazia Cecconi and Angela Iacobelli. “On each rod we build a story”. I would stop there and listen to them telling.

“The arm of an old chandelier can become the stem of a table lamp, glass spheres that have survived the decline of Murano chandeliers, bird boxes, and old tin boxes, the base for porcelain dogs and cat faces or 1940s impertinent kid faces”. “Meanwhile, feathers, passementerie and old silk fabrics free fans and lampshades from the anonymity too often boringly beige”.

Every component is recycled, nothing is new. “Apart from our ideas, a column drill, a small grinder with iron and plastic ceramic discs, lots of cutters, tweezers, screwdriver tongs, and all the imagination. Individual elements in our hands become projects”.

Here’s how imagination can save the environment.

How was the Art Cocò project born? And how are these lamps born?

“We are two designers, used to create layout of signs and images in space. Also used to video editing, a rhythmic alternation, which should never be boring. Add that advertising and design will get you used to seeing creative projects realized in a short time. They teach you to love vintage videos and images (think of American photography from the 1930s to the 1950s) and mix these old images with modern signs to ‘define’ new and unexpected messages. From here, the step is short. Just add the manual skills to the design and the objects are born, lamps in our case, which respect the whole creative process of the advertising message. This is why the Art Cocò lamps have a name. Because each of them is a story in which it is possible to recognize oneself.

A story that relies on emotions, on memories, with the aim sometimes to obtain a smile. A story that often guides the search for objects, a great job made up of flea markets, junk shops, basements, and old aunts.

But the opposite is also true. Sometimes you see an object, an old chandelier, a porcelain head and imagine which lamp could become and what name it might have.

Then there is the beauty of recycling everything, up to the last nut, of producing nothing and of using only existing materials that are often broken or forgotten. A true restyling of forms and materials“.

At Art Cocò nothing is done in series and there is no lamp like the other because the design starts with the dismantling of old chandeliers or the discovery of a magnificent tin box with decoration, shape and color.

Carta, punteruolo, ago, filo per salvare, con leggerezza, ciò che sembra ormai inutile: leggendo queste parole immaginiamo Federica Nassetti, creatrice del brand YUUY, nel suo laboratorio intenta a dare forma a quaderni, agende e album grazie all’arte della legatoria. Le chiediamo del suo progetto per raccontare a voi di YUUY, di cui ci siamo innamorati da subito, e per condividere con voi la sua meravigliosa visione del riciclo.

Federica raccoglie scarti sia industriali, sia prodotti quotidianamente nelle nostre case: “Cartoline, pacchi di biscotti, il cartone del latte, della panna o dei fagioli, vecchie cartine geografiche, locandine di concerti, la scatola del sale grosso, prove di stampa, il disegno di un bambino, campionari, il packaging di pasta, patatine e passata di pomodoro…. qualsiasi cosa! Tutto ciò che possa essere bucato e cucito. Ciascuno mi tiene da parte quello con cui ha a che fare tutti i giorni. Le tipografie mi tengono i ritagli di carta e gli avanzi di risme che non utilizzano più e i ragazzi conservano scatole di pasta, tonno, cereali e biscotti”.

Questa rete che Federica ha saputo creare per la raccolta di oggetti non più utili è molto bella. “Si è innescato un meccanismo meraviglioso, sempre più persone mi contattano dicendomi che tengono da parte materiali e ogni volta che partecipo ad un market ricevo sempre ‘regali’ da persone che arrivano con sacchettoni di scarti. Per contraccambiare regalo loro uno YUUY. Questa cosa mi emoziona sempre tantissimo…”.

Una volta nelle sue mani, ci racconta che diventano principalmente quaderni di qualsiasi dimensione, soprattutto a pagine bianche. “Sono nati poi col tempo agende, album e segnapacco (tag per i regali) e chissà cosa arriverà in futuro e con gli esperimenti”. La produzione infatti non è rigida, ma aperta all’ispirazione dell’autrice e in alcuni casi del cliente, in base alle forme, ai colori, alle caratteristiche degli scarti e alle aspettative di chi acquista. “Ogni oggetto recuperato viene preso in mano e a seconda di materiale, forma e dimensioni viene tagliato, riempito di pagine e rilegato: a ciascun notebook la sua rilegatura. Mi piace lasciare porte aperte alle richieste specifiche, quindi chiunque abbia un’esigenza o un’idea può scrivermi e possiamo trovare il modo di realizzarla! Ho realizzato notebook per un’associazione culturale che in occasione di un meeting internazionale voleva regalare ai partecipanti quaderni realizzati con le loro locandine. Ho collaborato con una ragazza che mi ha fatto realizzare quaderni con i tovaglioli e i cataloghi che realizza la sua azienda e capita spesso che mi inviino foto o ricordi per creare articoli con copertine speciali”. Cos’è quindi YUUY?

“Un progetto di legatoria che lavora in maniera trasversale. Propone oggetti semplicissimi, rilegati a mano e che nascono da qualcosa di forse inaspettato: quello che gli altri buttano via. Colleziona quello che ci circonda con l’intento di non farlo sparire: raccoglie e dà una seconda forma agli oggetti nascosti nel quotidiano, quelli con cui viviamo, quelli che passano inosservati e che non vengono più considerati utili. Siamo circondati da miliardi di oggetti di ogni forma, colore e materiale, oggetti che nessuno vuole più, dimenticati in una cantina, con un ciclo di vita breve e che vengono sostituiti sempre più velocemente. YUUY è “diversamente pagine”, è un invito alla scrittura manuale, è un insieme di carta nella quale possiamo riconoscerci con un significato o con ironia”.

Un’idea che nasce per caso, come ci racconta Federica: “Ci fu un anno, non ricordo esattamente quale, in cui frequentai un workshop di legatoria tenuto da un’amica: pura curiosità e fascino. In quello stesso periodo lavoravo a Bologna per un’azienda che si occupava di stampa digitale e che produceva quindi tantissimo materiale strano e colorato. Mettere insieme i due mondi fu un attimo e cominciai a rilegare per me quaderni utilizzando gli scarti delle lavorazioni: calibrazioni colore, stampe crashate e campionature. Poi gli amici cominciarono a chiedermeli e mi spinsero a partecipare ad un mercatino. Non sapevo bene cosa portare, quali quaderni realizzare e cosa mi avrebbero chiesto le persone e quindi arrivai con tutto quello che serviva per rilegare quaderni sul momento a seconda delle richieste. Carta, punteruolo, ago, filo e materiali a caso per le copertine, portai di tutto, stampe, cartine, cartoline e i packaging di casa. Le persone li guardavano, non capivano, spiegavo loro, ridevano e fu incredibile! Da lì mi si aprì un mondo e cominciai a rilegare un po’ di tutto continuando a coinvolgere le persone non solo però nella realizzazione del loro notebook personalizzato ma anche nella raccolta del materiale per realizzarli!”.

Perché riciclare? Qual è la bellezza del riciclo?

Riciclare è come una dichiarazione di non passività  al nostro vivere quotidiano. Ci aiuta a prendere coscienza di quello che ‘muoviamo’ ogni giorno e ad ottimizzare le nostre abitudini. Riciclare significa avere attenzione anche per il materiale di scarto e farlo seriamente, come dovrebbe essere fatto, ci rende parte attiva e questo può fare la differenza. Per quanto riguarda il progetto YUUY c’è bisogno però di specificare una cosa, perché ‘riciclare per YUUY’ significa decidere di rimettere in circolazione oggetti con cui in fondo ci identifichiamo, significa cambiarne destinazione d’uso, darne di nuovo valore e farlo con leggerezza: da qui nasce ‘BE IRONIC&RECYCLE’.

Come possiamo contribuire ad alimentare la produzione di YUUY?

“È molto semplice: abbiate il pensiero di fare una scatola in cui mettere gli scarti. Quando credete di essere pronti mi scrivete e io se posso vengo personalmente (il che mi fa sempre un piacere gigante ma non è sempre possibile), altrimenti mando un corriere a ritirare il pacco. In cambio ovviamente vi spedirò uno YUUY!”.

Come trovare YUUY?

“Quando riesco partecipo a fiere e grandi market (Abilmente, Il mondo creativo, Matrioska, Factory Market, ecc.) e piano piano sto cominciando a presentarmi a realtà come i negozi (Friendly shop, Qui virgola, Lino’s&Co). Ovviamente sono presente sui social (Facebook e Instagram, nome Yuuy_books) e da lì al momento prendo i contatti per le spedizioni. Sto costruendo anche il sito internet con la sezione e-commerce, che sarà disponibile a breve”.

The beauty of recycling and of Federica’s creations

Paper, awl, needle, thread to save lightly what now seems useless: reading these words we imagine Federica Nassetti, creator of the YUUY brand, in her studio intent on shaping notebooks, diaries and albums thanks to the art of bookbinding. We ask her about her project, to tell you about YUUY which we immediately fell in love with, and to share with you her wonderful vision of recycling.

Federica collects waste both industrial and produced daily in our homes: “Postcards, packs of biscuits, the carton of milk, cream or beans, old maps, concert posters, the big salt box, print tests, a child’s drawing, samples, the packaging of pasta, chips and tomato sauce … anything! Every object that can be pierced and sewn. Each one keeps me apart what he uses every day. The printers keep me paper scraps and scrap remnants that no longer use and the guys keep boxes of pasta, tuna, cereals and biscuits for me”.

This network that Federica has been able to create for the collection of objects no longer useful is very beautiful. “It has triggered a wonderful mechanism, more and more people contact me telling that they keep aside materials and every time I participate in a market I always receive ‘gifts’ from people who come with bags of waste. To reciprocate, I give them a YUUY. I’m always touched a lot by this thing…”.

Once in her hands, she tells us that they become mainly notebooks of any size, especially with blank pages. “Agendas, albums and gift tags were born over time, and who knows what will happen in the future with the experiments”. In fact, production is not rigid, but open to the inspiration of the author and in some cases of the customer, based on the shapes, colors, characteristics of the waste and the expectations of the buyer. “Each recovered object is taken in hand and depending on material, shape and size is cut, filled with pages and bound: each notebook has its own binding. I like to leave an open door to specific requests, so anyone with a need or an idea can write me and we can find a way to make it happen! Once I made notebooks for a cultural association that, during an international meeting, wanted to give to the participants notebooks made with their posters. I collaborated with a girl who made me make notebooks with napkins and catalogs produced by her company, and it often happens that I received photos or memories to create articles with special covers”. What is YUUY?

“A bookbinding project that works transversely. It offers simple, hand-bound objects, that are born from something perhaps unexpected: what others throw away. It gathers what surrounds us with the purpose of not making it disappear: collects and gives a second form to the objects hidden in the everyday life, those with whom we live, those who go unnoticed and are no longer considered useful. We are surrounded by billions of objects of every shape, color and material, by objects that nobody wants anymore, forgotten in a basement, with a short life cycle and replaced faster and faster. YUUY is ‘differently pages’, it is an invitation to manual writing, it is a set of paper in which we can recognize ourselves with a meaning or with irony”.

An idea that was born by chance, as Federica tells us: “There was a year, I do not remember exactly which, when I attended a bookbinding workshop held by a friend: pure curiosity and charm. In that same period I was working in Bologna for a company that was involved in digital printing and that therefore produced a lot of strange and colourful material. Combining the two worlds together was in an instant and I began to bind notebooks for me using the scraps of the processing: color calibrations, crashed prints and samples. Then friends began to ask me for them and pushed me to participate in a market. I did not know exactly what to bring, what notebooks to do and what people would have asked me to do. And so I came up with everything I needed to bind notebooks then and there according to the requests. Paper, awl, needle, thread and random materials for covers, I brought anything: prints, maps, postcards and packaging from home. People looked at them, they did not understand, I explained, they laughed and it was incredible! From there, a new world opened and I began to bind a bit of everything, continuing to involve people not only in the creation of their personalised notebooks but also in the collection of the materials to create them!”.

Why recycling? What is the beauty of recycling?

Recycling is like a declaration of non-passivity to our daily living. It helps us to become aware of what we ‘move’ every day and to optimize our habits. Recycling means paying attention to the waste material and doing it seriously, as it should be done; it makes us an active part and this can make the difference. Regarding the YUUY project, however, we need to specify one thing, because ‘recycling for YUUY’ means deciding to put into circulation objects with which we identify ourselves deep down. It means changing their intended use, giving them new value and doing it lightly: hence ‘BE IRONIC & RECYCLE’ was born.

How we can help to feed the production of YUUY?

“It’s very simple: have the thought of making a box in which to put the waste! When you think you are ready, write me and if I can I will come personally (which is always a giant pleasure to me but it is not always possible), otherwise I send a courier to pick up the package. In exchange of course I will send you a YUUY!”.

How to find YUUY?

“When possible, I take part in trade shows and large markets (Abilmente, The creative world, Matryoshka, Factory Market, etc.) and slowly I’m starting to introduce myself to entities like shops (Friendly shop, Qui virgola, Lino’s & Co).
