Nicole McLaughlin è una creativa designer che, oltre a lavorare per Reebok, realizza scarpe e vestiti utilizzando materiali di scarto. Ha iniziato la sua carriera nell’abbigliamento sportivo mentre era al college e ha cominciato a progettare con gli scarti dopo aver voluto avventurarsi al di fuori del design grafico.

“Cerco di riutilizzare tutto. La mia idea è prendere cose che la gente butta via, e se è possibile cambiare la prospettiva di ciò che può essere e come può essere riciclato. Ogni volta che taglio materiale e ho un’eccedenza, lo salvo e cerco di usarlo in un altro modo”.

Comode pantofole da uomo create dalle tasche di una camicia Polo Ralph Lauren, sneaker formate da volani da badminton, una scarpetta a forma di palloncino ricavata dalle palline da tennis Warston deformate, un sandalo con cinturini Nikon e le scarpe Ikea.

Quando la progettazione di un articolo non va come previsto, lo trasforma in qualcos’altro. “Devi essere disposto ad esplorare e fallire. E se avete un’idea che si pensa funzioni, e inizia a fallire lungo la realizzazione, cambiatela”.

La filosofia di McLaughlin potrebbe essere preziosa per le aziende che spesso scartano o bruciano pezzi indossabili a causa del design difettoso o perché sono rimasti invenduti. “Questo è un problema enorme e tutti stanno finalmente diventando consapevoli di queste cose. Penso che debba essere fatto in modo autentico, e non solo, ‘oh, riciclo’ e trovare qualcosa che è riciclato e aumentarne il prezzo perché definito ‘sostenibile’ “. Le creazioni di McLaughlin possono essere indossate.

“Incoraggio le persone a guardare i miei progetti per mantenere una mente aperta e non prendere troppo sul serio!”

Avevo in mente l’idea di rielaborare una giacca vintage Columbia, quindi sono andata su Depop per cercare il pezzo giusto. Ho finito per selezionare questa giacca particolare sia per il colore, sia per le doppie tasche sul petto, che potevano essere riproposte nelle scarpe come tasche di scorta”. 

English – Upcycling: the reuse of scraps, between art and practicality, by designer Nicole McLaughlin

Nicole McLaughlin is a creative designer who, in addition to working for Reebok, makes shoes and clothes using waste materials. She began his career in sportswear while in college, and started designing with scraps after she wanted to venture out of graphic design. 

“I do try to reuse everything. My whole idea is taking things that people throw away, and if you can change the perspective of what it can be and how that can be upcycled. Anytime I cut stuff and have excess material, I save it and try to use it some other way”.

Comfortable men’s slippers created from the pockets of a Polo Ralph Lauren shirt, sneaker made of badminton shuttlecocks, a balloon-shaped shoe made from deformed Warston tennis balls, a Nikon strap sandal and Ikea shoes.

When the design of an item does not go as planned, she turns it into something else. “You have to be willing to explore and fail. And if you have an idea that you think is going to work, and it starts failing halfway through, change it”.

McLaughlin’s philosophy could be invaluable for companies that often discard or burn wearable pieces because of the faulty design or because they remained unsold. “That is a huge problem, and everyone is finally becoming aware of those things. I think it needs to be done in an authentic way, not just, ‘oh, recycle’ and find something that is recycled and jack the price up on it because it says ‘sustainable’ “. McLaughlin’s creations are wearable.

“I encourage people when looking at my projects to keep an open mind and not take it too seriously!”.

Below are the photos of his creations and a video about the upcycling project carried out with Depop on the occasion of Earth Day.  “Instead of contributing more waste, I love to take these pieces, give them a new life, and challenge the perception of what ‘reused’ looks like. I had in my mind the idea of reworking a vintage Columbia jacket so I hopped on Depop to search for the right piece. I ended up selecting this particular jacket for both the color and the double chest pockets that could be repurposed in the booties as stash pockets”.

Ogni anno la Fondazione H&M organizza il concorso Global Change Award, avviato nel 2015 per favorire il passaggio da un’industria della moda lineare a circolare. L’obiettivo è favorire la ricerca, il supporto e la diffusione di innovazioni dirompenti.

The Loop Scoop – Il progetto mira a passare da un modello “Take-make-waste” a un modello circolare in cui materiali e risorse preziose vengono utilizzate e riutilizzate di nuovo proponendo un sistema digitale che specifica come ogni scelta di materiale, taglio e produzione dell’indumento influisca sul pianeta, fornendo ai progettisti conoscenze e strumenti su come progettare con intento riciclabile. Le specifiche vengono quindi salvate come identità digitale, che i consumatori possono scansione per per accedere alle informazioni sulle migliori opzioni, incoraggiando i consumatori a riutilizzare, aggiornare o riciclare il loro abbigliamento.

Sane Membrane – Questo progetto vuole offrire un’alternativa a coloro che amano la natura e desiderano indossare abiti che non causino danni all’ambiente, per via delle sostanze nocive aggiunte ai capi per aumentarne la resistenza a pioggia e intemperie. L’idea è una soluzione biodegradabile  non tossica, a base minerale e priva di fluoro che svolge il lavoro in modo altrettanto efficace ma naturale. Può essere aggiunto a qualsiasi tipo di indumento sotto forma di una membrana micro-sottile che protegge dagli elementi in modo sostenibile.

Sustainable Sting – Il progetto propone la coltivazione dell’ortica, per ricavare un tessuto sostenibile simile al lino, dove può crescere naturalmente al contrario di altre piante:  in pendii ripidi e difficili da raggiungere, dove l’irrigazione è difficile e i macchinari non arrivano. Gli avanzi di processo possono essere usati per fare carta e coloranti naturali. Oltre a fornire potenzialmente opportunità di lavoro e nutrienti a oltre 200.000 piccoli agricoltori in tutto il Kenya, il tessuto organico all’ortica è un’alternativa ecocompatibile ai tessuti convenzionali.

Clothes that Grow – Questo progetto presenta un’innovazione in attesa di brevetto per risolvere il problema dei vestiti dei bambini che nei primi due anni di vita crescono di 7 taglie. La soluzione è produrre abiti resistenti e accattivanti che crescono con il bambino, con una vasta gamma di taglie da 9 mesi a 4 anni. Ispirati dall’ingegneria spaziale e dalle geniali tecniche di piegatura degli origami per massimizzare il volume in una quantità minima di spazio, questi indumenti sono antivento, antipioggia e piegati in modo tale che le parti superiori e inferiori del capo possano espandersi e adattarsi a ogni bambino per anni.

English – Global Change Award: the 5 winner innovative projects towards a circular fashion industry

Every year the H&M Foundation organizes the Global Change Award competition, launched in 2015 to encourage the transition from a linear fashion industry to a circular one. The goal is to promote research, support and the scaling up of disruptive innovations.

The winners of the 2019 edition have just been announced. Our favorite? Clothes that Grow!

The Loop Scoop – The project aims to move from a “Take-make-waste” model to a circular model in which valuable materials and resources are used and reused again by proposing a digital system that specifies how each choice of material, cut and garment production affects on the planet, providing designers with knowledge and tools on how to design with recyclable intent. The specifications are then saved as a digital identity, which consumers can scan to access information on the best options, encouraging consumers to reuse, update or recycle their clothing.

Sane Membrane – This project aims to offer an alternative to those who love nature and want to wear clothes that do not cause damage to the environment, due to the harmful substances added to the garments to increase their resistance to rain and weather. The idea is a non-toxic biodegradable, mineral-based and fluorine-free solution that does the job just as effectively but naturally. It can be added to any type of garment in the form of a micro-thin membrane that protects from the elements in a sustainable way.

Sustainable Sting – The project proposes the cultivation of nettle, to obtain a sustainable fabric similar to linen, where it can grow naturally as opposed to other plants: in steep and difficult to reach slopes, where irrigation is difficult and machinery does not arrive. Process leftovers can be used to make natural paper and dyes. In addition to potentially providing job opportunities and nutrients to over 200,000 small farmers across Kenya, organic nettle tissue is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fabrics.

Clothes that Grow – This project presents a patent-pending innovation to solve the problem of clothes for children who grow 7 sizes in the first 2 years of life. The solution is to produce resistant and attractive clothes that grow with the child, with a wide range of sizes from 9 months to 4 years. Inspired by spatial engineering and ingenious origami folding techniques to maximize volume in a minimal amount of space, these garments are windproof, rainproof and folded in such a way that the upper and lower parts of the head can expand and adapt to each child for years.

Una delle convinzioni che ho è che per scrivere su un sito sia necessario leggere, studiare, informarsi sempre su ciò di cui si scrive. Certo non ci sente mai pronti: stare al passo con quello che accade nel mondo richiede attualmente ritmi rapidi, essere aggiornati sulle nuove tecnologie e scoperte comporta un impegno costante, leggere tutto ciò che al giorno d’oggi è facilmente a disposizione su un argomento è un’impresa, selezionare le fonti sicure è sfidante. Ma ritengo sia necessario per comprendere, proporre, descrivere, raccontare, spiegare, confrontarsi su un tema di cui ci si occupa. E praticamente diventa un obbligo se come nel nostro caso si tengono lezioni e workshop. Nel percorso di aggiornamento rientrano anche i corsi (nell’ultimo anno ne ho seguiti 5 sull’argomento moda, moda sostenibile, design, sostenibilità). Leggerei tre libri al giorno su queste tematiche!

Da una parte, il corso sulle strategie sostenibili di business (Harvard) mi ha rincuorato con un bellissimo messaggio positivo e la possibilità di cambiare la gestione aziendale orientandola a un solido scopo sociale e/o ambientale (diverso dalla formale mission) con risultati economici positivi nel lungo termine. Si può essere sostenibili e profittevoli, si può gestire in modo efficiente un’azienda prestando attenzione alle persone e all’ambiente. Credo in questo fortemente, al punto da voler orientare un nuovo modo di fare consulenza ad aziende e altre piccole/grandi organizzazioni verso forti obiettivi sociali e ambientali, con risultati positivi per tutti gli attori coinvolti, per le comunità in cui operano, per la natura circostante. Una domanda di un compito del corso: “Una singola azienda che agisce da sola può avere un grande impatto su clienti, dipendenti e comunità. Ma può avere un impatto al di là del suo mondo particolare? Se sì come?”. Così ho risposto al compito:

“Sì, penso che il loro impatto sia come una pietra gettata in un lago, producendo cerchi sempre più grandi che creano onde e muovono l’acqua intorno. È come un effetto a catena: se hanno un impatto su clienti, dipendenti e comunità allora clienti, dipendenti e comunità a loro volta creeranno un impatto simile, moltiplicando e diffondendo l’effetto. Se le singole aziende valorizzano la sostenibilità e il rispetto per le persone e l’ambiente, tali valori – attraverso i loro comportamenti e le loro azioni – influenzeranno i clienti, i dipendenti e quindi le comunità”.

Dall’altra parte, il corso teorico e pratico presso il London College of Fashion (University of Art London) sul design sostenibile nella moda mi ha fatto toccare con mano le sfide dei designer di oggi e riflettere su quanto sia in fondo stimolante vivere in questo momento, in cui la creatività è la chiave per individuare tutte le opportunità che abbiamo per cambiare il sistema della moda (e non solo). Vedere da vicino le opzioni tra cui possiamo scegliere in fase di creazione degli indumenti mi ha portato a riflettere ancora di più sulla responsabilità dei designer.

“In molti modi, la crisi ambientale è una crisi del design. È una conseguenza di come gli oggetti sono fatti, gli edifici sono costruiti e i paesaggi utilizzati”. (Van Der Ryn, 2004)

Abbiamo gli strumenti per ideare e realizzare soluzioni per vestirsi (e in generale per vivere) minimizzando il nostro impatto negativo sulla natura, oltre che sulle persone coinvolte e sugli animali.

Un gruppo di studio internazionale (siamo arrivati da Ucraina, Spagna, Italia, India, Brasile, Ungheria, Singapore, Giappone, Regno Unito) dà speranza di diffondere buone nuove pratiche di settore nel mondo! Grazie all’insegnante Noorin Khamisani, fondatrice del brand sostenibile Outsider, per tutti gli input creativi. Abbiamo provato insieme ad applicare l’upcycling, inventandoci nuovi usi di giacche da uomo destinate ai rifiuti. Abbiamo sperimentato la sfida del design zero waste, per creare senza produrre alcuno scarto con i tessuti a disposizione. Abbiamo fatto il pieno di stimoli per creare e di positività sul futuro del settore nonostante le complesse sfide!

Un modo nuovo di progettare, produrre e gestire è possibile (e necessario), ci crediamo fortemente.

English – Dress Ecode’s lifestyle: Behind the scenes – A new way of designing, producing and managing is possible

One of the beliefs I have is that to write on a website it is necessary to read, study, always inquire about what is written. Certainly you never feel ready: keeping up with what is happening in the world currently requires rapid rhythms, being up to date on new technologies and discoveries involves constant effort, reading everything that is readily available on a topic today is a company, selecting the trustable sources is challenging. But I think it is necessary to understand, to propose, to describe, to narrate, to explain, to confront oneself on a theme we are dealing with. And practically it becomes an obligation if, as in our case, lessons and workshops are held. Courses are also included in the growing path (in the last year I have followed 5 of them on the topic of fashion, sustainable fashion, design, sustainability). I would read three books a day on those issues!

On the one hand, the course on sustainable business strategies (Harvard) has encouraged me with a beautiful positive message and the possibility of changing business management, orienting it towards a solid social and/or environmental purpose (different from the formal mission) with positive economic results in the long term. You can be sustainable and profitable, you can efficiently manage a company by paying attention to people and the environment. I strongly believe in this, to the point of wanting to orientate a new way of consulting companies and other small/large organisations towards strong social and environmental objectives, with positive results for all the actors involved, for the communities in which they operate, for nature surrounding. A question of a course homework: “Individual firms acting alone can have a great impact on customers, employees and communities. But can they have an impact beyond their particular worlds? If so how?”. That was my reply:

“Yes, I think their impact is like a stone thrown in a lake, producing circles larger and larger that create waves and move the water around. It’s like a chain effect: if they have an impact on customers, employees and communities then customers, employees and communities on their own create a similar impact, multiplying and spreading the effect. If individual firms value sustainability and respect for people and the environment, those values – through their behaviours and actions – will affect clients, employees and then the communities”.

On the other hand, the theoretical and practical course at the London College of Fashion (University of Art London) on sustainable fashion design made me touch the challenges of today designers and reflect on how stimulating it is to live in this moment, in which creativity is the key to identifying all the opportunities we have to change the fashion system (and not only). Seeing the options we can choose from when creating garments has led me to think even more about the responsibility of designers.

“In many ways, the environmental crisis is a design crisis. It is a consequence of how things are made, buildings are constructed, and landscapes are used”. (Van Der Ryn, 2004)

We have the tools to design and implement solutions to dress (and generally live) by minimizing our negative impact on nature, as well as on the people involved and animals.

An international study group (we arrived from Ukraine, Spain, Italy, India, Brazil, Hungary, Singapore, Japan, United Kingdom) gives hope to spread good new industry practices around the world! Thanks to the teacher Noorin Khamisani, founder of the sustainable brand Outsider, for all the creative inputs. We tried together to apply the upcycling, inventing new uses for men’s jackets that were going to be wasted. We have experienced the challenge of zero waste design, to create without producing any waste with the available fabrics. We have been full of inspirations to create and be positive about the future of the sector despite the complex challenges!

A new way of designing, producing and managing is possible (and necessary), we strongly believe in it.

“Gli oggetti da noi prodotti sono tutti realizzati utilizzando tecniche di artigianato digitale. L’artigianato digitale consiste nella produzione di oggetti ‘uno alla volta’, tramite tecniche innovative (software di modellazione tridimensionale al PC e stampanti 3D) con la cura e l’attenzione del fatto a mano. “La natura è sempre stata protagonista nelle mie ispirazioni, dopo il Liceo artistico ho dipinto per anni sperimentando diverse tecniche.
Ho ampliato il mio percorso studiando le basi per la decorazione e la modellazione dell’argilla e plasmandola ho capito che le mie mani desideravano di più e questa tecnica avrebbe in qualche modo condizionato le mie scelte future.
Le prime sperimentazioni con la carta arrivano diversi anni dopo durante un periodo di crisi artistica in cui la pittura non mi rappresentava più ed ero fortemente alla ricerca di un mio stile personale che potesse distinguermi. Attraverso la cartapesta ho scoperto la mia vera identità artistica e nel 2009 nasce Sognoametista con l’ambizione di poter riproporre questa tecnica antica in chiave moderna ed innovativa. Nel tempo ho rielaborato il mio impasto rendendolo fine quasi come l’argilla ma con una grande resistenza agli urti, oserei dire che è quasi indistruttibile!”.
La linea Sassi Sognoametista nel 2014 è stata scelta dalla scenografa del film “Un natale stupefacente” con Lillo e Greg, Paola Minaccioni, Ambra Angiolini e Paolo Calabresi.

Two Italian boys, Francesco and Lorenzo, create jewelry and accessories with the help of digital technologies, made in 3D printing and eco-friendly.
“The objects we produce are all made using digital craft techniques. Digital craftsmanship consists in the production of objects ‘one at a time’, through innovative techniques (three-dimensional modeling software to the PC and 3D printers) with the care and attention of the hand-made. The techniques and tools we use are highly sustainable (low energy impact and use of recyclable or biodegradable materials). Each of our objects is sent in a package ready to be given, with a small brochure inside that describes the 3D printing techniques we use”.
They say they are inspired by science fiction films, contemporary architecture and 80s new wave music.

Sognoametista
Modern wall clocks and ecological jewellery made of papier-mache from recycled paper. Light and resistant, they are inspired by the beauty of the stones as nature has designed them. Marzia creates stones with 100% recycled paper and paints them by hand, for those who love modern art and look for an ethical jewel.
“Nature has always been a protagonist in my inspirations, after the artistic high school I painted for years experimenting with different techniques.
I have expanded my path by studying the basics for the decoration and modelling of clay, and shaping it I understood that my hands wanted more and this technique would have somehow influenced my future choices.
The first experiments with the paper came several years later, during a period of artistic crisis in which painting no longer represented me and I was strongly looking for a personal style of mine that could distinguish me. Through the papier-mâché I discovered my true artistic identity and in 2009 Sognoametista was born with the ambition of being able to reproduce this ancient technique in a modern and innovative way. Over time I have reworked my dough making it almost as fine as clay, but with a great resistance to impacts, I would dare to say that it is almost indestructible! “.

Facile dire “cerco di comprare da un marchio sostenibile”… non così facile individuarlo! Cosa dovremmo guardare per capire se un brand sia sostenibile e responsabile? Abbiamo provato a identificare 15 aspetti per aiutarci a scegliere da chi acquistare riducendo l’impatto negativo sulle persone e sull’ambiente. Trovare un produttore al 100% sostenibile è un sogno, ma non perdetevi d’animo: l’importante è cercare di fare il possibile e soprattutto perseguire gli obiettivi che reputiamo più rilevanti. E se trovate un marchio vicino alla perfezione perché non contattarlo e suggerirgli ciò che secondo voi manca? Dress Ecode vi aiuta!
Un brand è sostenibile e responsabile se…

1. Prevede beneficenza, donazioni, collaborazioni con comunità locali. Se l’acquisto contribuisce a sostenere organizzazioni con finalità sociali, umanitarie, ambientali, di salvaguardia di animali, di supporto di comunità locali è positivo.
2. Ricicla oppure riutilizza materiali, trasformando, riparando, decorando o modificando vecchi prodotti o tessuti,  invece di ricorrere a nuove materie prime. Per esempio può prevedere collaborazioni con altre aziende da cui approvvigionarsi di scarti da trasformare nella propria produzione.
3. Genera un’impronta ambientale limitata; è attento alla quantità di emissioni di CO2, allo spreco di risorse, al consumo di acqua, all’utilizzo di sostanze tossiche e/o inquinanti, al mantenimento dell’ecosistema locale, alla produzione di rifiuti, al ricorso a energie rinnovabili. Anche iniziative per piantare alberi e compensare il consumo di CO2 che deriva dal trasporto sono apprezzabili. Alcune aziende inoltre ricorrono a materie prime che derivano da foreste sostenibili.
4. Considera l’intero ciclo di vita del prodotto in fase di design, prevedendo cosa succede al manufatto una volta terminato l’utilizzo (sarà riciclato? smaltito? è biodegradabile? è compostabile? è riutilizzabile?). Lodevole se ha già accordi con altre organizzazioni per il ritiro dell’usato e il riutilizzo.
5. Rispetta le condizioni dei lavoratori, ossia garantisce caratteristiche fisiche del luogo di lavoro necessarie per lo svolgimento delle attività lavorative in sicurezza e salute, offre stipendi equi e che consentano un livello di vita adeguato, riconosce il valore delle professionalità (no sfruttamento), assicura l’assenza di discriminazioni, stabilisce orari di lavoro adeguati (no schiavitù), non sfrutta minori in nessuna fase della filiera produttiva e distributiva.
6. Ha sede vicino a noi (nella nostra città, regione oppure in Italia o in Europa) in modo da minimizzare l’impatto ambientale del trasporto dei nostri acquisti.
7. Propone un prodotto di artigianato, così da favorire il mantenimento di tradizioni e da preservare e accrescere la ricchezza culturale locale.
8. Usa fibre naturali al posto di fibre sintetiche derivate dal petrolio (es. nylon, poliestere, acrilico), che quindi non rilasciano microplastiche durante il lavaggio e che provengono da coltivazioni biologiche in cui è ridotto l’impatto sull’ambiente in termini di consumo di acqua e di assenza di pesticidi e sostanze tossiche, per l’uomo (soprattutto per chi ci lavora a contatto), gli animali e l’ambiente.
9. Evita sostanze chimiche tossiche e inquinanti anche per colorazione e finitura, preferendo per esempio tinte ad acqua o l’applicazione di tecniche tradizionali naturali.
10. Vende prodotti di buona qualità in grado di durare nel tempo, può fornire garanzie decennali o suggerimenti per la manutenzione del prodotto e su come farlo durare il più possibile.
11. È attento all’impatto dell’imballaggio e a non inquinare con il packaging. Per esempio utilizza carta/cartone, bioplastica, vetro, acciaio per contenere il prodotto venduto e ricorre a soluzioni ecologiche per imballarlo per la spedizione.
12. Mostra trasparenza descrivendo e condividendo informazioni su tutte le fasi dall’approvvigionamento alla distribuzione, per esempio fornendo tracciabilità della filiera produttiva, indicando come e dove avviene la produzione, quali sono le sostanze utilizzate ecc.
13. Ha punti vendita fisici, in modo da ridurre l’impronta ambientale del trasporto dei nostri acquisti.
14. Rispetta gli animali, tassativamente quelli protetti o in via di estinzione. Evita totalmente di utilizzare materie prime di provenienza animale oppure se ne fa ricorso anche parzialmente è estremamente attento a non sfruttare e provocare sofferenza agli animali, rispettando il più possibile l’ecosistema.
15. Ha ottenuto certificazioni. Per garantire che il prodotto sia biologico, es. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OCS (Organic Content Standard); per garantire il rispetto dell’ambiente, es. Oeko-Tex, FSC (Forest for All Forever), Carbon Reduction Label, Ecolabel; per garantire il rispetto delle condizioni sociali, es. FairTrade, FWF (Fair Ware Foundation), SA 8000 (Social Accountability International); per garantire il rispetto degli animali, es. Animal Free Fashion, Cruelty Free, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), RDS (Responsible Down Standard), RWS (Responsible Wool Standard); per assicurare che il prodotto sia riciclato, es. GRS (Global Recycle Standard), RCS (Recycled Claim Standard); per la misurazione dell’impatto dell’intero ciclo di vita del prodotto, es. LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). La certificazione ICEA (Istituto Certificazione Etica ed Ambientale) racchiude più certificazioni.

15 issues to consider when choosing a sustainable and responsible brand

It’s easy to say “I try to buy from a sustainable brand”… it’s not so easy to find it!
What should we have a look at in order to understand if a brand is sustainable and responsible? We have tried to identify 15 features to help choosing from whom to buy, reducing the negative impact on people and the environment. To find a 100% sustainable manufacturer is a dream, but do not lose heart: the important thing is to try to do everything possible and above all to pursue the objectives that we consider most relevant. A brand is sustainable and responsible if…

1. It’s engaged in charity, donation, partnership with local communities. It’s a positive thing if the purchase contributes to support organization with social, humanitarian, environmental, animal protecting, sustaining local communities.
2. Recycles or reuses materials, transforming, repairing, decorating or modifying used products or fabrics or refuses, instead of resorting to new raw materials. For example, it may envisage collaborations with other companies from which it obtains supplies of production waste to be used in their production.
3. Generates a limited environmental footprint; attentive to the amount of CO2 emissions, waste of resources, consumption of water, the use of toxic and / or polluting substances, the maintenance of the local ecosystem, the production of waste, the use of renewable energy. Moreover initiatives to plant trees and offset the CO2 consumption resulting from transport are appreciable. Some companies also use raw materials derived from sustainable forests.
4. Considers the entire life cycle of the product in the design phase, predicting what happens to the product once the use is completed (Will it be recycled? Disposed? Is it biodegradable? Is it compostable? Is it reusable?). Praiseworthy if it already has agreements with other organizations for the withdrawal of the used and for the re-use.
5. Respects the conditions of the workers, that is to say it guarantees the physical characteristics of the workplace necessary for the safety and health work, it offers fair salaries and allows an adequate standard of living, it recognises the value of professionalism (no exploitation), it ensures the absence of discrimination, it establishes appropriate working hours (no slavery), it does not exploit children at any stage of the production and supply chain.
6. Produces close to us (in our city, region or country) in order to minimise the environmental impact of the delivery of our purchases.
7. Offers a handicraft product, so as to favor the preservation of traditions and to secure and increase the local cultural richness.
8. Uses natural fibres instead of synthetic fibres derived from petroleum (eg nylon, polyester, acrylic), which therefore do not release microplastics during washing and which come from organic crops where the impact on the environment is reduced in terms of water consumption and absence of pesticides and toxic substances, for humans (especially for those who work in contact), animals and the environment.
9. Avoids toxic and polluting chemicals also in dyeing and finishing, preferring, for example, water dyes or the application of traditional natural techniques.
10. Sells good quality products that last overtime, it can provide decades of guarantees or suggestions for product maintenance and on how to make it last as long as possible.
11. It is attentive to the impact of package and not to pollute with packaging. For example, it uses paper / cardboard, bioplastic, glass, steel to contain the product sold and uses ecological solutions to pack it for shipping.
12. Shows transparency describing and sharing information on all phases from procurement to distribution, for example by providing traceability of the production chain, indicating how and where production takes place, which substances are used, etc.
13. It has physical stores, in order to reduce the environmental footprint of the transportation of our purchases.
14. Respects animals – strictly the protected or endangered ones. It totally avoids the use of raw materials of animal origin or if it uses them even partially it is extremely careful not to exploit and cause suffering to animals, respecting the ecosystem as much as possible.
15. Has obtained certifications. For ensuring that the product is organic, e.g. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OCS (Organic Content Standard); to ensure respect for the environment, e.g. Oeko-Tex, FSC (Forest for All Forever), Carbon Reduction Label, Ecolabel; for guaranteeing compliance with social conditions, e.g. FairTrade, FWF (Fair Ware Foundation), SA 8000 (Social Accountability International); for ensuring the respect of the animals, es. Animal Free Fashion, Cruelty Free, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatments of Animal), RDS (Responsible Down Standard), RWS (Responsible Wool Standard); to ensure that the product is recycled, e.g. GRS (Global Recycle Standard), RCS (Recycled Claim Standard); for measuring the impact of the entire product life cycle, e.g. LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). The ICEA certification (Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification) contains several certifications.
