Abbiamo scelto di raccontare la storia di questo brand italiano perché lo spirito del riuso e del recupero di materiali di diverse tipologie, alla base di RE-BORN Shoes da generazioni, ci è piaciuto molto. Ti lasciamo scoprire nell’intervista la filosofia, la storia e i materiali di questo marchio sostenibile.

Ciao Nicola, ci racconti di RE-BORN Shoes?

“Le calzature RE-BORN Shoes del calzaturificio Eredi Masolini Raimondo – MASOLINI1949 nascono dalla nostra storica azienda a conduzione familiare, la quale può vantare ormai un’esperienza di quattro generazioni nel settore calzaturiero. La sapienza artigianale tramandata di padre in figlio, unita allo spirito imprenditoriale che sa adattare continuamente la produzione alle nuove dinamiche sociali ed economiche, fa sì che i nostri prodotti siano attentamente rifiniti, resistenti, comodi e dal design sempre elegante e accattivante”.

Perché avete deciso di iniziare questa attività?

“Fin dal secondo dopoguerra il paese di Gonars, nella bassa friulana, fece del settore calzaturiero il punto di forza del suo sviluppo industriale e artigianale: le scarpe prodotte nei suoi numerosi calzaturifici erano vendute sia in Italia sia all’estero in paesi come Austria, Germania, Olanda e Belgio.
Valentino Masolini, il mio bisnonno, e i suoi figli furono tra i pionieri di questa emozionante fase di sviluppo economico. La competenza, l’intraprendenza e la passione che consentirono allora di fondare una solida realtà produttiva costituiscono tuttora per noi i valori fondamentali a cui far riferimento nella conduzione dell’azienda”.

Cosa vi ha ispirato?

“È vero che spesso la necessità stimola l’ingegno e porta a concepire soluzioni innovative. Dopo la guerra, quando le materie prime scarseggiavano, Valentino Masolini e i suoi figli pensarono di riciclare le scarpe e i tessuti delle divise militari rimasti dalla guerra appena terminata; fu così che trasformarono quei materiali ‘di scarto’ in nuove calzature. Ed è proprio a questo spirito del riuso che ci siamo ispirati nel progettare le nostre RE-BORN Shoes: nel dare vita a questa nuova serie non abbiamo fatto altro che riprendere quelle stesse tecniche di lavorazione e di recupero dei materiali che erano alle origini dell’azienda!

L’ispirazione è nata pure dalla mia esperienza personale, lavorando per parecchi anni in Etiopia, sempre nel settore calzaturiero dove ho potuto collaborare con grosse fabbriche di scarpe, marchi internazionali, progetti governativi di sviluppo del settore e con Sole Rebels, un marchio alternativo che già iniziava a lavorare nel settore del riciclo. Queste varie esperienze mi hanno permesso di viaggiare parecchio, visitando fiere e fabbriche di mezzo mondo… Capendo così da che parte stava andando l’industria delle scarpe, cogliendo i vari pregi e riflettendo sui tanti difetti del mercato di massa”.

Quando e come avete iniziato il progetto RE-BORN Shoes?

“Abbiamo iniziato il progetto RE-BORN Shoes circa un anno fa, ufficialmente partecipando come espositori alla Barcolana 51, dove esponevamo le nostre scarpe che per l’occasione erano prodotte nella maggior parte con vele usate”.

Qual è l’aspetto per te più importante del vostro brand?

“L’aspetto più importante del nostro brand è quello di riuscire a valorizzare materiali che fino a pochi giorni prima erano destinati a essere distrutti. Il fatto di poterli far ‘rinascere’ emana un senso di positività a chi apprezza la nostra storia e i nostri prodotti, ma soprattutto a chi li indossa.
I nostri clienti sono i nostri maggiori venditori, quando comprano le nostre scarpe facciamo capire che sono parte del brand. Da allora inizia un feedback  dai nostri clienti, che ci comunicano le loro emozioni nell’indossarle e nel raccontare ai propri amici la storia e i materiali con cui le scarpe sono state fatte.
Oltretutto la comunicazione con i clienti ci permette di capire pregi e difetti dei materiali che usiamo, così da poterci sempre migliorare”.

2 prodotti del brand che hanno un significato speciale per te: quali sono e perché?

“Sono legato per vari motivi a tutti i modelli che facciamo, ma uno dei prodotti che amo è l’articolo RE-BORN T1: scarpe fatte con le vele, jeans, pneumatici e asciugamani usati”.

“Materiali completamente differenti tra di loro con provenienze e storie che si intrecciano tra km di autostrada, miglia marine, passeggiate nei parchi e camere di albergo”.

Riguardo alla sostenibilità, il riutilizzo di materiali altrimenti destinati a essere buttati è l’aspetto che ci è piaciuto molto. Anche le suole, le tomaie e le confezioni (zainetti realizzati con ombrelloni da spiaggia) sono in materiali riciclati. RE-BORN Shoes utilizza jeans, tele di ombrelloni, asciugamani, stoffe, pneumatici, resti di produzione di tessiture artistiche, vele di imbarcazioni. Producete singolarmente in modo artigianale ogni paio richiesto. Ci sono altri progetti in vista?

“Stanno nascendo tanti nuovi progetti e collaborazioni che ci stanno aprendo nuove strade e facendo conoscere materiali svariati da far diventare scarpe. Da ritagli di stoffe artigianali della Val Badia alle t-shirt, passando per il tartan per fare i kilt. Quindi siamo sempre alla ricerca di emozioni nuove da trasmettere a chi ci segue.
Il nostro sogno è anche di poter creare una filiera ‘importante’, creando altri posti di lavoro dove si recuperano i materiali in vario modo rendendoli disponibili per la nostra produzione, ma anche per altre che possano necessitarne”.

Cosa ne pensi del fare rete con altre micro-imprese?

“Fare rete è comunque un passo fondamentale per un’economia circolare come quella che stiamo mandando avanti.
Abbiamo già iniziato una collaborazione in co-branding con un marchio straniero. In Italia si dovrà collaborare soprattutto nel marketing, forse creando situazioni tipo fiere, linee di vendita o altro da studiare assieme, che ci possa permettere di abbattere i costi dandoci una visibilità maggiore”.

English – Brand in focus – RE-BORN Shoes: born from the long tradition of recovering materials

Brand in focus is a series of interviews made for Sfashion-net*, our partner in the diffusion of an alternative to fast fashion. For them we interviewed Nicola Masolini of RE-BORN Shoes. We have chosen to tell the story of this Italian brand because we like a lot the spirit of reuse and recovery of materials of different types, which has been the basis of RE-BORN for generations. We let you discover the philosophy, history and materials of this sustainable brand in the interview.

Hi Nicola, can you tell us about RE-BORN Shoes?

“RE-BORN Shoes of the Eredi Masolini Raimondo – MASOLINI1949 shoe factory are born from our historic family-run company, which can now boast four generations of experience in the footwear sector. The craftsmanship handed down from father to son, combined with the entrepreneurial spirit that knows how to continually adapt production to new social and economic dynamics, ensures that our products are carefully finished, resistant, comfortable and with an elegant and captivating design”.

Why did you decide to start this business?

“Since the Second World War, the town of Gonars, in the lower Friuli area, has made the footwear sector the strong point of its industrial and artisan development: the shoes produced in its numerous shoe factories were sold both in Italy and abroad in countries such as Austria, Germany, Holland and Belgium.
Valentino Masolini, my great-grandfather, and his children were among the pioneers of this exciting phase of economic development. The expertise, resourcefulness and passion that allowed us to establish a solid production reality are still for us the fundamental values ​​to refer to in running the company”.

What inspired you?

“It is true that necessity often stimulates ingenuity and leads to the conception of innovative solutions. After the war, when raw materials were scarce, Valentino Masolini and his sons thought about recycling the shoes and fabrics of military uniforms left over from the war just ended; this is how they transformed those ‘waste’ materials into new shoes. And it is precisely this spirit of reuse that we were inspired by in designing our RE-BORN Shoes: in giving life to this new series we have done nothing but resume those same techniques of processing and recovery of materials that were at the origins of company!

The inspiration also came from my personal experience, working for several years in Ethiopia, always in the footwear sector where I was able to collaborate with large shoe factories, international brands, government development projects in the sector and with Sole Rebels, an alternative brand that it was already starting to work in the recycling sector. These various experiences have allowed me to travel a lot, visiting fairs and factories all over the world… thus understanding where the shoe industry was going, grasping the various qualities and reflecting on the many defects of the mass market”.

When and how did you start the RE-BORN Shoes project?

“We started the RE-BORN Shoes project about a year ago, officially participating as exhibitors at Barcolana 51, where we shown our shoes which for the occasion were mostly produced with used sails”.

What is the most important aspect of your brand for you?

“The most important aspect of our brand is to be able to enhance materials that until a few days before were destined to be destroyed. The fact that they can be ‘reborn’ exudes a sense of positivity to those who appreciate our history and our products, but above all to those who wear them.
Our customers are our biggest sellers, when they buy our shoes we make it clear that they are part of the brand. Since then, feedback has begun from our customers, who communicate their emotions in wearing them and in telling their friends about the story and the materials with which the shoes were made.
Furthermore, communication with customers allows us to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the materials we use, so that we can always improve”.

2 brand products that have a special meaning for you: what are they and why?

“I am attached for various reasons to all the models we make, but one of the products I love is the RE-BORN T1 item: shoes made with sails, used jeans, tires and towels”.

“Materials that are completely different from each other with origins and stories that are intertwined between kilometers of motorway, nautical miles, walks in parks and hotel rooms”.

In terms of sustainability, the reuse of materials otherwise destined to be thrown away is the aspect that we really liked. The soles, the shoe uppers and the packaging (backpacks from beach umbrellas) are also made from recycled materials. RE-BORN Shoes uses jeans, umbrellas canvases, towels, fabrics, tires, artistic weaving production remains, boat sails. Each single pair ordered is an handcraft piece. Are there any other projects in sight?

“Many new projects and collaborations are emerging, opening up new paths for us and introducing various materials to become shoes. From scraps of handcrafted fabrics from Val Badia to t-shirts, through tartan to make kilts. So we are always looking for new emotions to convey to those who follow us.
Our dream is also to be able to create an ‘important’ supply chain, creating other jobs where materials are recovered in various ways, making them available for our production, but also for others who may need them”.

What do you think of networking with other micro-enterprises?

“Networking is still a fundamental step for a circular economy like the one we are developing.
We have already started a co-branding collaboration with a foreign brand. In Italy we will have to collaborate above all in marketing, perhaps creating situations such as fairs, sales lines or other things to study together, which will allow us to reduce costs by giving us greater visibility”.

Di Bolina Sail abbiamo scritto in un articolo dedicato a borse pratiche e belle create dalle vele recuperate (https://dress-ecode.com/?s=vele). Non solo per il mare, ma anche per la città, per lo sport, la piscina, la bici. Ci piace l’idea di portare con sè una piccola parte di una storia di mare, e nello stesso tempo di riciclo evitando un rifiuto (una vela piena di fascino) in più. Zaini, borsoni, trousse, borse, pochette, sacche: un’ampia scelta di prodotti a cui oggi si aggiungono le scarpe. Desideriamo saperne di più e contattiamo Emanuele Fantin, cofondatore di Bolina Sail.

Quando avete iniziato? Come e perché è cominciato il riciclo di vele?

“Bolina Sail è nata nel 2013 da un incontro casuale tra Nicole, la mente creativa dell’azienda che all’epoca lavorava in una veleria, e me, programmatore web con la passione per il mare.

Nicole nel suo tempo libero aveva iniziato a creare qualche borsa per sé e per le amiche con i ritagli di lavorazione della veleria e le vecchie vele dei clienti; vedendo le borse le ho proposto di collaborare creando un sito web per venderle, un primo test di mercato iniziato quasi per gioco.

Da lì, ricevendo una risposta molto positiva dal pubblico, abbiamo nel tempo sviluppato il progetto ampliando l’offerta e sviluppando sempre nuovi articoli, anche in base alle richieste dei clienti”.

Avete da poco lanciato anche una linea di scarpe in vela! Quali materiali sono utilizzati?

“Le scarpe sono una novità di quest’anno, ma ci stavamo lavorando già da tempo per trovare il design e i materiali giusti.

Sono prodotte con diversi tipi di vela: dalle vele colorate da kitesurf a quelle tecniche da regata; ma il materiale che useremo ancora di più sono le vele classiche in dacron, in quanto abbiamo sviluppato la possibilità di stampa direttamente su vela, cosa che ci permette di personalizzarle e creare design sempre diversi.

I dettagli della scarpa (linguetta e rifiniture colorate) sono in pelle. Ed è in pelle anche l’interno della scarpa. Per la soletta interna abbiamo scelto il memory foam, un materiale morbido che si adatta alla forma del piede rendendo la scarpa molto comoda”.

Quali numeri sono disponibili? Sono su ordinazione?

“La numerazione standard al momento è dal 35 al 45. Si possono realizzare su ordinazione scegliendo la vela, l’eventuale stampa personalizzata e il colore degli inserti”.

Da dove arrivano le vele che utilizzate?

“Le vele vengono recuperate principalmente da privati o dalle velerie che ritirano le vecchie vele dei clienti quando vengono sostituite.

Dalle velerie otteniamo anche alcuni ritagli di lavorazione che non potrebbero essere utilizzati in altro modo, così come anche da tappezzerie che ci forniscono ritagli di materiali tecnici nautici e di pelle”.

Se abbiamo una vela da riciclare come possiamo farvela avere?

“E’ possibile contattarci tramite i nostri canali (sito, mail, social, whatsapp) per indicarci il tipo di vela da riciclare. Organizziamo noi il ritiro in tutta Italia tramite corriere espresso e il servizio è totalmente gratuito per il cliente. In cambio, in base al materiale e alla dimensione della vela, inviamo al cliente uno sconto sui nostri prodotti che può spendere online o presso i nostri punti vendita.

Lo sconto può essere anche utilizzato per la realizzazione di un prodotto personalizzato, magari usando proprio la vela ricevuta; questo accade molto spesso perché ai nostri clienti piace tenere con sé un ricordo di una vela con la quale hanno navigato”.

Chi produce le borse e le scarpe?

“La produzione delle borse è interamente fatta all’interno di Bolina Sail per ora. Per le scarpe curiamo la parte creativa e il processo di stampa; la rifinitura delle scarpe viene poi affidata ad esperti artigiani (sempre qui in Italia) i quali hanno tutte le attrezzature necessarie per la lavorazione finale”.

Dove possiamo acquistarle? Avete un negozio a Lignano e lo shop on line, giusto?

“Esattamente, a Lignano abbiamo il nostro laboratorio vicino al Porto Vecchio (Viale Italia 48) e il punto vendita nella zona centrale che abbiamo aperto lo scorso anno (Viale Gorizia 23). Online poi vengono caricati di volta in volta le diverse creazioni ed è possibile ordinare da tutta Europa. Per chi non trova il modello o il colore preferito? Nessun problema, possiamo realizzarlo su misura!”.

Una vela speciale che avete trasformato in borsa o scarpe?

“Ogni tanto ci capita qualche vela che ci fa esclamare “wow!”.

Tramite un amico qualche anno fa abbiamo ricevuto le vele di una bellissima barca d’epoca, un 8 Metri Stazza Internazionale che si chiama “Aria”. Una barca in legno del 1935, splendida, con una storia fantastica.

Per l’armatrice abbiamo realizzato uno zaino con il suo numero velico “8.I-17” e i quadri per i festeggiamenti degli 80 anni della barca. E’ stata una soddisfazione!

Un’altra vela che abbiamo è stata invece usata durante il giro del mondo in occasione della Volvo Ocean Race, storie di mare emozionanti”.

C’è qualche altra novità in vista?

“La creatività e le idee da noi viaggiano più veloci di quello che possiamo realizzare!

Sviluppiamo sempre nuovi prototipi in diversi ambiti, quelli in lavorazione sono legati all’abbigliamento e all’arredo per i quali abbiamo già diverse idee.

Inoltre stiamo portando avanti dei progetti con alcune associazioni impegnate nel sociale. 

Sicuramente a breve ci sarà qualche novità…ma per ora è ancora top secret!

Nel frattempo ci stiamo già preparando ai prossimi eventi, ovvero alla Barcolana di Trieste (ottobre) e all’Artigiano in Fiera di Milano (dicembre), manifestazioni alle quali partecipiamo già da anni con un ottimo riscontro da parte dei clienti”.

English – From recycled sails not only bags, backpacks, clutch bags, sail duffels: Bolina Sail launches a beautiful line of shoes, to wear sea stories

We wrote about Bolina Sail told in an article dedicated to practical and beautiful bags created from the recovered sails (https://dress-ecode.com/?s=vele). Not only for the sea, but also for the city, for sports, the pool, the bike. We like the idea of ​​bringing a small part of a sea story with us, and at the same time of recycling, avoiding one more waste (a sail full of charm) produced. Backpacks, bags, trousse, clutch bags, sail duffels, sailor’s bags: a wide selection of products to which shoes are now added. We would like to know more about and we contacted Emanuele Fantin, co-founder of Bolina Sail.

When did you start? How and why did the recycling of sails begin?

“Bolina Sail was born in 2013 from a chance encounter between Nicole, the creative mind of the company that at the time was working in a sail loft, and me, a web programmer with a passion for the sea.

Nicole in her spare time had started to create some bags for herself and her friends with the processing clippings of the sailmakers and the old sails of the customers; seeing the bags I proposed to collaborate by creating a website to sell them, a first market test started almost for fun.

From there, receiving a very positive response from the public, we have over time developed the project by expanding the offer and always developing new items, also based on customer requests”.

You have also recently launched a line of sailing shoes! What materials are used?

“Shoes are new this year, but we have been working on it for some time to find the right design and materials. They are produced with different types of sail: from kitesurf coloured sails to technical ones for regattas; but the material that we will use even more are the classic dacron sails, as we have developed the possibility of printing directly on sail, which allows us to customise them and create designs that are always different.

The details of the shoe (tongue and coloured trim) are in leather. And the inside of the shoe is also in leather. For the insole we chose memory foam, a soft material that adapts to the shape of the foot making the shoe very comfortable”.

What numbers are available? Are they made to order?

“The standard numbering at the moment is from 35 to 45 (EU size). They can be made to order by choosing the sail, any custom printing and the color of the inserts”.

Where do the sails you use come from?

“The sails are recovered mainly by private individuals or by sailmakers who collect the old sails of the customers when they are replaced.

We also get some processing clippings from the sailmakers that could not be used in any other way, as well as upholsterers that provide us with processing clippings of nautical technical and leather materials”.

If we have a sail to recycle, how can we deliver it to you?

“It is possible to contact us through our channels (website, mail, social media, whatsapp) to indicate the type of sail to be recycled. We organise collection throughout Italy by express courier and the service is totally free for the customer.

In return, based on the material and size of the sail, we send the customer a discount on our products that he/she can spend online or at our stores.

The discount can also be used for the creation of a customised product, perhaps using just the received sail; this happens very often because our customers like to keep a memory of a sail they sailed with”.

Who produces the bags and the shoes?

“The production of the bags is entirely made inside Bolina Sail for now. For shoes we take care of the creative part and the printing process; the finishing of the shoes is then entrusted to expert craftsmen (always here in Italy) who have all the necessary equipment for the final processing”.

Where can we buy them? You have a shop in Lignano and the online shop, right?

“Exactly, in Lignano we have our workshop near the Old Port (Viale Italia 48) and the sales point in the central area that we opened last year (Viale Gorizia 23).

Online the different creations are loaded from time to time and can be ordered from all over Europe.

For those who can’t find the model or favorite color? No problem, we can make it customised!”.

A special sail that you turned into a bag or shoes?

“Sometimes we get some sail that makes us say ‘wow!’.

Through a friend a few years ago we received the sails of a beautiful vintage boat, an 8 Metre Stazza Internazionale called “Aria”. A beautiful 1935 wooden boat with a fantastic history.

For the owner, we made a backpack with the sail number “8.I-17” and the pictures for the 80th anniversary of the boat. It was a satisfaction!

Another sail that we have it has instead been used around the world during the Volvo Ocean Race, exciting sea stories”.

Is there any other news coming?

“Creativity and ideas travel faster than we can achieve! We always develop new prototypes in different areas, those in processing are related to clothing and furnishings for which we already have several ideas.

Furthermore we are carrying out projects with some associations involved in social work.

Surely there will be some news soon… but for now it’s still top secret!

In the meantime we are already preparing for the next events, namely at the Barcolana in Trieste (October) and at the Artigiano in Fiera in Milano (December), events in which we have been participating for years with excellent feedback from customers”.
