English – Dress ECOde’s lifestyle: on the wave of the article about Sashiko By writing the article (which you can find here) on the ancient Sashiko technique adopted by modern sustainable fashion practices, I decided to try it firsthand. Suddenly it all clicked and it seemed to me the perfect idea for those light jeans set aside in the closet for 10 (15?) years, in some washing faded near the knee area. Does it also happen to you to not accept to give up on a garment you care about? The model, the color, the light denim fabric, I liked too much to resign myself to not wearing them anymore. They stood there waiting for an idea. And Sashiko has arrived. Why not try it? The alternative would have been to keep them unnecessarily in the wardrobe. On that relaxing blue, the white points were a reference to the waves of the sea. So on the evenings of forced lockdown for Covid-19, a glimpse of the sea slowly took shape, placing side by side three shades of blue point after point, thread after thread. I apologize to experienced current and past Sashiko masters, for the imperfection, for the roughness of the stitches and the unrefined geometries, sketched by hand with inaccuracy. The desire to arrive to the end and finally recover those trousers stayed with me in the home evenings, with a bit of suggestion identifying myself in the old repairers of threadbare clothes who on the dark winter evenings patiently moved the fabric around the embroidery needle. Now they are ready for the season of waves, sea and underwater minnows.

Vorrei guardare solo i tesori. Andare avanti leggera, a mani vuote. ENGLISH: How the walk has changed – Dress ECOde’s lifestyle Personally I find that walking helps to restore contact with the surrounding environment, to slow down, to look around. I could stay well without it. Especially at sea, even in winter on beautiful sunny days that in the south more south of Italy are not lacking. Immense spaces where the eye relaxes at the sight of shimmering dunes, bright waters and deep blue everywhere, without boundaries between sky and sea. Strolling barefoot most of the time, feel good about looking at that sun and that blue and playing to find what the sea offers on the water’s edge. Shells, algae, strange insects, pebbles, jellyfish, spiraling animal dens, small sticks, hermit crabs, branches, pumice stones and other natural surprises. A game that has always fascinated me. But something has changed. Since the beginning of this path of greater responsibility towards the environment, among the gifts of the sea the attention has begun to move also on other objects that are not gifts: caps, glasses, bottles, wrappers, fishing nets, pieces of slippers , cigarette butts, fragments of paper and plastic, iron wires, pipes and many other things that we give to nature… Also this time, as soon as we arrive, we want to set foot on this beautiful beach for the usual walk to the sea. I go out with the curiosity to see how the landscape has changed this season. The wind, the currents and the tides shape dunes, shoreline and expanse of water. It’s so much the craving that I remember of the bags and gloves to collect the waste only once on the beach… I start walking, with the game of the search for treasures, but there is nothing to do: you can not leave those polluting intruders there! Fortunately, there is no shortage of pockets in winter, so you can store exceptionally small treasures (such as stones, twigs and empty shells, often putting them back at the beach) and keep your hands free to collect the worst waste. I walk, I look at the blue, the sun, the treasures and at the same time clean up that wonderful corner to thank it for the show he offers. Yes, I would like sometimes to just put one foot after the other and that is enough, sometimes at a fast pace as a daily sport session. I would like to look only at the treasures. Going forward lightly, with empty hands. Something inside, however, makes you stoop, gather and clean, under the eyes of those few people who cross in winter: they see you walking with your hands full of bottles, plastic cups and cans. Or, as from the day after finally equipped, they see you with full bags wondering who knows what you’re pulling up with so much zeal. I can not leave the polluting human traces there. I can not. I imagine a fish, a jellyfish, a little bird that engulfs a waste. As if on the floor of the house, mine or of those who host me, I accepted rubbish strewn here and there. I can not. And I like to think that it is so for many other people, that it is normal and trivial to write. So banal that those who are now reading think: “What a foregone thing to write, I always collect, what a newness”. Isn’t it? PS On the cover one of the beautiful dunes.
