Workshop for children (6-10 years) to create animals with recycled fabrics.

Silhouettes, pins, needles, pencils, chalks, spools, scissors, fabrics… the long table set up for the occasion was full of materials, and of hands industriously working to make their own accessory. Many people have tried their hand at recovering a fabric, drawing, cutting and sewing. Even those who did not know how to use needle and thread. There are those who have chosen to create a turban, some a headband, some scrunches. And also those who joined the children in choosing an eco-pet! The idea was to separate the two workshops, but in the end young and less young  joined the table, and in the midst of that creative chaos for a moment I thought: “Will we be able to follow everyone well? But, above all, will they be having fun?”.

While Carlotta coordinated experienced and inexperienced eco-fashion designers of turbans, headbands and scrunches, I let myself be carried away by the enthusiasm of those who created eco-animals. Samu, 3 and a half years old, chose a dinosaur, absolutely green: because that’s how he saw it at the museum! When you choose upcycling, you know, the materials are those available: it is the design that follows the raw material, not the other way around. Search and search  again we found a military green fabric perfect for the dinosaur!

The best part of these workshops is the final satisfaction of the participants, the joy of having created with their own hands, of not having bought, of having saved a possible refusal.

The extra happiness for us was being together live: Anne-Laure and I finally in person! And meeting Carlotta, Mayra Sallie and Grazia, , directly from the Club Sostenibilità on clubhouse. Chiara from Gipsy cip also came to give us a hand!

It’s November. We are temporarily in the city where I was born (Modena), for family reasons going back and forth from the hospital. I wear a bag bought many years ago, unfortunately in a fast fashion chain. I really like the model and I try to make it last for a long time, having now made a senseless purchase, before embracing sustainable fashion. It’s faux leather, so it’s okay about respect for animals but… often synthetic materials are used to avoid leather but have nothing respectful of animals and the environment. But who knew then? So I try to make it lasts as long as possible.

The damage

I’m in Modena and looking at the bag I exclaim: “I really like this model! It’s really cute!”. The next day, I don’t know how, a peeling appears on the top… To be thrown away.

I can’t do it. After collecting plastic and waste, I think and think again before throwing an item like this away. It should be a solution… If it were made of good quality leather, such as those we find in vintage and second-hand shops, it would have its charm even ruined (and in any case it wouldn’t peel like that) or it would be worth taking it to your trusted cobbler for repair. Instead this is what happens when you buy such pieces in fast fashion chains.

The solution

Time passes, the bag remains in a corner of the closet, waiting for a solution. Until one day, in fact, arranging fabrics and scraps I find a square of brown eco-leather. What if… What if I try to fix it myself, with a darker colored insert? I put the fabric close to the bag and it seems to work!

The recovery

I didn’t take any photographs of the bag before the restoration. It occurred to me during the recovery operation! In the video, however, you can see half as it was before the intervention. Originally, it was of a single color. I placed the sheet of a newspaper on the bag to take the shape of the insert to be covered. Then I placed the paper template on the back of the fabric, drawing the line to be cut with a pencil, trying to keep half a centimeter of the edge for safety. In fact, I imagined that the fabric would shrink once attached.

After sprinkling them with fabric glue, I patiently put the two shapes on the bag, mainly pressing on the edges and going over the corners.

Finally I passed the hair dryer, so that the inserts adhered better. I remembered when dad used to make me blow the hair dryer as a child to let the covers of school books adhere better…

The outcome

And here is the result! I don’t dislike the final effect. I have to apply the glue again on the corners now that the first pass is dry. These are the points where it will otherwise tend to rise. In the meantime, however, I’ll show you in the photo.

How does it look to you? I really appreciate the idea of being able to use it for a long time to come! Even if it is no longer in a solid color, I can still wear it pleasantly.

Vivere in modo green al momento non sembra sempre semplice e tanti genitori si chiedono come poter essere più ecologici nella vita familiare. Ci sono molte mamme e papà che si impegnano nel quotidiano, anche tra i lettori di Dress Ecode. Elisa Ripamonti per noi è una “mamma green” e ci racconta cosa riesce a fare in famiglia per ridurre l’impatto sull’ambiente.

“A me pare non molto, perché vivo solo il mio quotidiano nel modo che mi sembra il migliore, ma agli occhi degli altri sembra che un po’ ecologica lo sia. Essere mamma comporta delle sfide quotidiane che vanno ben oltre la gestione materiale dei propri figli, ma comprendono sfide educative e valoriali di grande impatto”.

Come hai iniziato, Elisa?

“Ho iniziato ad avere uno stile cosiddetto ‘eco’ senza neanche accorgermene, o meglio, per motivazioni più che ecologiche legate alle mie esperienze di vita pregresse. Appena aperto il fontanile di Monza San Fruttuoso, quartiere in cui abito, ho subito fatto la tessera, perché? Perché l’acqua costava meno e la fatica rispetto all’andare al supermercato era quasi inferiore: al fontanile prendevo anche 30/50 litri d’acqua alla volta, al supermercato per eguagliare avrei speso molto di più e mi sarei riempita il carrello. Solo molti anni dopo è arrivato il senso del vetro contro plastica e ora non lo abbandonerei più. Se si parla di acqua naturale, la beviamo anche tranquillamente dal rubinetto, ma per la frizzante abbiamo scartato il gasatore e preferito il fontanile. E via via le azioni quotidiane e familiari sono diventate sempre di più”.

Ce ne racconti qualcuna?

“L’utilizzo di pannolini lavabili per i figli e il ricorso all’usato per tutti gli accessori di prima necessità, dal lettino alla culla, sia come passaggio tra amici, sia attraverso le varie liste di scambio e baratto DESBri (Distretto di Economia Solidale in Brianza). I vestiti dei miei figli sono tutti rigorosamente di secondamano: ho amiche con figli/e più grandi dei miei che mi passano regolarmente abbigliamento e scarpe, alcune cose le ho prese sempre grazie alla rete DESBri e poi a mia volta anche io rimetto in circolo passando ad altre famiglie. Prima di avere il secondo figlio tenevo tutto, poi è arrivato un maschio, quindi ho iniziato a dar via le cose da bambina, con la certezza che in caso di necessità le cose sarebbero tornate.

Il valore della condivisione mi è sempre appartenuto, di famiglia, grazie alle diverse esperienza fatte, compresa quella di scoutismo o servizio in un istituto per disabili, fino al vivere ogni giorno a contatto con la natura. Una natura ‘funzionale’ più che selvaggia, ma che da sempre mi ha insegnato il valore della cura, della crescita, del rispetto… un orto di famiglia (che ancora mio padre porta avanti), animali da cortile e il nostro giocare liberi, ma anche la fiducia che ci veniva accordata nella semina e nella raccolta, pur nel gioco e nell’assecondare il nostro essere bambini, e questo respirano ora i miei figli”.

Autoproduci?

“Alla condivisione si è aggiunta negli anni di crescita una grande passione per la scoperta e il fare che mi hanno sempre portato a sperimentare qualcosa di nuovo, a cercare il semplice e il possibile, nel mio lavoro di educatrice per disabili prima e di insegnante di sostegno ora. Per cui sono giunta a trovare sempre nuove strade e cose da fare insieme pensando al fattibile per tutti, oltre che genuino, autoproducendo in cucina: dal lievito madre allo yogurt fatto in casa, alle barrette di cereali, al formaggio, alla pasta fresca ripiena e non, alla passata di pomodoro raccolto nell’orto e ai preparati per minestra con le nostre verdure che mi durano quasi tutto l’inverno, ai ghiaccioli fatti a partire dalla frutta vera con conseguente conservazione di marmellate e succhi di frutta dati dagli ‘avanzi’. Già, ai miei figli non manca nulla, loro fanno merenda tutti i giorni solo che quando mi sono resa conto che con il grande consumo di ghiaccioli, succhi di frutta e yogurt, torte, ecc. producevamo un mare di immondizia e in più spendevamo un bel po’ di soldi, ho iniziato a farli con loro”.

A questo punto di solito ti chiedono: “Eh ma il tempo? Dove lo trovi?”

“Già perché lo stupore più grande è: ‘Ma dove trovi il tempo?’. Se coinvolgi i bambini (attualmente i miei figli hanno 3 e 6 anni) ci metti più tempo, ma dài loro del tempo di qualità, oltre che insegnare loro, implicitamente, molte competenze di autonomia e procedurali. In più ovviamente togli tutti i conservanti che i processi industriali sono costretti ad inserire”.

E per le feste cosa fai?

“Anche le feste di compleanno sono diventate per noi un’occasione di stile zero waste: alle feste altrui andiamo con i nostri bicchieri, piatti, posate e tovaglioli lavabili. Ammetto, all’inizio mi vergognavo e dicevo di farlo per permettere al piccolo di non bere e mangiare dai piatti altrui, ma ora dico semplicemente la verità e questo stupisce, a me però non costa nulla, mentre al pianeta risparmio rifiuti inutili. Quest’anno mia figlia grande mi ha chiesto di fare la festa in casa ed è stata una grande occasione di divertimento, tutto il più possibile zero waste: giochi a tema fate e folletti con tutto preparato in casa, non abbiamo quasi prodotto rifiuti, e anche il regalino finale che ora si usa dare agli invitati sono stati vasetti fatti riutilizzando bottiglie di plastica (che ho dovuto chiedere ad amici, perché noi non ne usiamo), dove abbiamo seminato basilico che loro dovevano far crescere e poi usare in casa! Mentre l’anno scorso per la festa al nido del piccolo ho preparato gavettoni riutilizzabili in ciniglia seguendo un tutorial su youtube”.

Ci racconti cosa hai preparato quest’anno per la festa di tua figlia?

“Quest’anno mia figlia maggiore mi ha chiesto per la prima volta la festa con gli amici (ultimo anno di materna). Di solito abbiamo sempre festeggiato in famiglia e a scuola portando torta o simili. Quando mi ha chiesto la festa in casa abbiamo iniziato subito a pensare ad una tematica, che è stato fate e folletti e da lì abbiamo inventato giochi, caccia al tesoro, tiro al canestro: un gran successo! Ho preparato i dolci in casa: crostatine dei folletti (con marmellata di mirtilli), succo di fate (con sciroppo di mirtilli) e degli elfi (con sciroppo di sambuco), focacce, pizzette, pop corn fatti in casa (semi acquistati sfusi) e ovviamente stoviglie riutilizzabili, solo per i tovaglioli ho usato questa volta quelli usa-e-getta perché non ne avevo abbastanza di stoffa. Un successone e alla fine gli invitati sono andati via con vasetti di basilico del bosco (da far crescere, noi avevamo solo seminato) messi in bottiglie di plastica dipinte a mo’ di casette delle fate e degli elfi”.

Cosa scegli come regali ad amici e colleghi? Qualche idea?

“Quando scelgo di fare dei regali, se posso mi oriento su qualcosa zero waste, ma è comunque abbastanza complicato, perché al di là delle cose ‘generiche’ come borracce o borse che possono essere accettate, alcuni prodotti sono molto specifici e non voglio comunque sprecare soldi né risorse per uno shampoo solido che magari viene buttato. Se posso scelgo di regalare laboratori da seguire, biglietti di teatro o cinema, ingresso ai parchi... E chiedo lo stesso per me o i miei figli: quest’anno abbiamo ricevuto l’ingresso a due parchi di divertimento e due musical, più ovviamente qualche gioco, non posso tralasciare il loro essere bambini. Comunque anche i giochi, quando i bimbi hanno passato l’età, vanno ad altre famiglie o scuole o servizi educativi. Quest’anno i miei colleghi e amici mi hanno regalato una serata all’Escape Room (escapersmilano.it) e un colafritto (visto su un sito zero waste in un post di una ragazza napoletana), sono stata felicissima! Anche mio marito mi ha regalato un laboratorio da frequentare e ho ricevuto dei vestiti sostenibili dal sito Wearethought“.

Per le gite come vi organizzate?

“Beeswrap fatti in casa (qui alcune ricette), sacchetti porta panini al posto della pellicola, borracce, bicchieri telescopici, cannucce non usa-e-getta e poi i porta succhi riutilizzabili che riempiamo ad ogni occasione”.

Per l’igiene personale?

“Saponette solide fatte in casa, cotton fioc riutilizzabili, coppetta mestruale per me, crema mani fatta in casa e anche dentifricio, lo spazzolino di bambù o con testine intercambiabili, deodorante fatto in casa e il sacchetto che raccoglie le microfibre in lavatrice (sacchetto microfibre)”.

Per la pulizia della casa?

“Sapone per i piatti, detersivi eco e ricaricabili alla spina. Ora con l’aiuto dell’akunandzilo sto iniziando ad autoprodurre anche sapone liquido, ma sono proprio alle prime armi”.

E con la spesa cosa hai scelto di fare?

“Scelgo la spesa sfusa, nei pochi negozi che lo consentono: frutta e verdura dall’ortolano, coi miei sacchetti (a volte anche al supermercato, sempre coi miei sacchetti e non importa se pago lo stesso il centesimo), dal macellaio coi miei contenitori e così anche legumi, riso, cous cous…questo è un filino più difficile, a causa degli orari dei piccoli negozi rispetto ai supermercati e inizialmente sembrava tutto più costoso, ma in realtà ora la nostra dieta è molto molto più varia e fantasiosa e il costo più o meno simile, ma la qualità si sente!”.

Per la cancelleria come fai?

“Per la questione studio e appunti, con un bel po’ di fatica sto cercando di scaricarmi libri sul kindle, per scrivere utilizzo i quaderni correctbook, sono magnifici e li suggerirei a chiunque. Nascono da un progetto olandese, l’unico neo è infatti la spedizione dall’Olanda, ma credo cmq che importante siano anche lo scopo e la frequenza con cui si utilizzano le spedizioni, e la scelta comunque di certi siti al posto di altri (insomma, la perfezione è ben lontana). Sono quaderni a buchi, a cui si possono quindi aggiungere fogli, fatti come le lavagnette bianche si possono quindi cancellare e riscrivere all’infinito. Ho il formato da borsetta per la lista della spesa o cose simili, un quaderno A3 e un A4, per report alle riunioni, appunti, esercizi, prove di brutta. Inoltre ho penne stilografiche a stantuffo per quando devo compilare documenti o firmare o scrivere a mano”.

Un consiglio alle mamme e papà che desiderano iniziare questo cammino, ma temono le sfide tra cui la mancanza di tempo?

“Suggerisco di non partire volendo fare tutto, ma scegliere un campo che si ritiene ‘più facile’ e dove si possono fare più sforzi. Per esempio, io sono partita dal bagno, perché tanti erano gli accorgimenti fattibili senza fare fatica, dalla carta igienica in carta riciclata allo spazzolino. Riguardo il tempo non so, alla fine per cucinare in casa o autoprodurre può bastare anche solo una mezz’ora: mica serve un menù subito da ristorante, a quello ci si arriva col tempo! Di sicuro avere qualcuno che fa con te aiuta, ma i piccoli gruppi di amici e amiche che autoproducono si possono facilmente creare!”.

English – Green mums and dads without stress? Elisa, eco mum, tells us what she is able to do

Living green at the moment does not always seem easy and many parents wonder how to be more environmentally friendly in family life. There are many mothers and fathers who engage in everyday life, also among the readers of Dress Ecode. Elisa Ripamonti for us is a “green mum” and tells us what she can do in the family to reduce the impact on the environment.

“It doesn’t seem much to me, because I only live my daily life in the way that seems to me the best, but in the eyes of others it seems a bit ecological. Being a mother involves daily challenges that go far beyond the material management of one’s children, but include educational and value challenges of great impact”.

How did you start, Elisa?

“I started having a so-called ‘eco’ style without even realising it, or rather for more than ecological reasons related to my previous life experiences. As soon as the drinking fountain opened at Monza San Fruttuoso, a neighborhood where I live, I immediately made the card, why? Because the water cost less and the effort compared to going to the supermarket was almost inferior: at the fountain I also took 30/50 liters of water at a time, at the supermarket for the same quantity I would have spent a lot more and I would have filled the trolley. Only many years later the sense of glass versus plastic arrived and now I would never abandon it. If we talk about natural water, we also drink it quietly from the tap, but for the sparkling we have discarded the carbonation device and preferred the fountain. And gradually the daily and family actions have become more and more”.

Can you tell us some of them?

“The use of washable diapers for children and of used accessories for all basic necessities, from cot to cradle, both as a passage between friends, and through the various exchange lists and swapping DESBri (District of Economic Solidarity in Brianza). My kids’ clothes are all strictly second-hand: I have friends with children who are older than mine, who regularly wear clothes and shoes, and I have always taken some things thanks to the DESBri network and then in turn I also go back to the circle by passing to other families. Before having the second child I kept everything, then a boy arrived, so I started giving girl things away, with the certainty that things would come back if necessary.

The value of sharing has always belonged to me, as a family, thanks to the various experiences I have had, including scouting or service in an institution for the disabled, up to living every day in contact with nature. A ‘functional’ nature rather than wild, but which has always taught me the value of care, growth, respect… a family garden (which my father still carries on), farmyard animals and our free play, but also the trust that was given to us in sowing and in harvesting, even in the game and in supporting our being children, and this is what my children now breathe”.

Do you DIY?

 “Sharing has been added over the years of growth to a great passion for discovery and doing that have always led me to experiment something new, to look for the simple and the possible, in my work as a teacher for disabled people first and a teacher of support now. So I have come to always find new ways and things to do together thinking about the feasible for everyone, as well as genuine, homemaking in the kitchen: from sourdough, to yogurt, cereal bars, cheese, pasta fresh stuffed or not, tomato sauce picked in the garden and mixes for soup with our vegetables that last me almost all winter, popsicles made from real fruit with consequent preservation of jams and fruit juices from the ‘leftovers’. Yeah, my kids don’t miss anything, they make a snack every day, only when I realised that with the great consumption of popsicles, fruit juices and yoghurts, cakes, etc. we were producing a sea of ​​garbage and in addition we spent a lot of money, I started homemaking with them”.

At this point they usually ask you: “Eh but the time? How do you make it?”

“Yes, because the greatest wonder is: “But how do you make the time?”. If you involve children (currently my children are 3 and 6 years old) it takes more time, but it gives them quality time, as well as implicitly teaching them many autonomous and procedural skills. In addition, of course, you take away all the preservatives that industrial processes are forced to insert”.

And what do you do for the parties?

“Even birthday parties have become an opportunity for zero waste style: at other people’s parties we go with our washable glasses, plates, cutlery and napkins. I admit, at the beginning I was ashamed and I said to do it to allow the child not to drink and eat from other people’s dishes, but now I simply say the truth and this amazes me, but it costs me nothing, while saving planetary waste to the planet. This year my older daughter asked me to have a party at home and it was a great opportunity to have fun, all zero waste as much as possible: fairies and elves themed games with everything prepared at home, we almost didn’t produce waste, and even the final little gift that is now used to give to the guests were jars, made by reusing plastic bottles (which I had to ask friends, because we don’t use them), where we sowed basil that they had to grow and then use at home! While last year for the nursery party of my little son I prepared re-usable chenille water balloons following a tutorial on youtube”.

Can you tell us what you prepared for your daughter’s party this year?

“This year my eldest daughter asked me for the first time a party with her friends (last year of kindergarten). Usually we have always celebrated with family and school bringing cake or similar. When she asked me for a party at home we immediately started thinking about a theme, which was fairies and elves and from there we invented games, treasure hunts, shot for the basket: a great success! I prepared the desserts at home: tarts of the elves (with blueberry jam), fairy juice (with blueberry syrup) and elves (with elderberry syrup), focaccia, pizzas, homemade popcorn (seeds purchased in bulk) and of course reusable crockery, only for the napkins I used the disposable ones this time because I didn’t have enough of them made of fabric. A great success and in the end the guests left with jars of basil from the forest (to be grown, we had only sown) put in plastic bottles painted as houses for fairies and elves”.

What do you choose as gifts for friends and colleagues? Some idea?

“When I choose to make gifts, if possible I find anything zero waste, but it’s still quite complicated, because beyond the ‘generic’ things like water bottles or bags that can be accepted, some products are very specific and I don’t want anyway waste money or resources on a solid shampoo that might be thrown away. If I can, I choose to give as presents workshops to follow, theater or cinema tickets, entrances to the parks… And I ask the same for me or my children: this year we received the entrance to two amusement parks and two musicals, in addiction obviously to some games, I can’t overlook their being children. However even the games, when the children have passed the age, go to other families or schools or educational services. This year my colleagues and friends gave me an evening at the Escape Room (escapersmilano.it) and a ‘colafritto’* seen in a post by a girl from Naples on a zero waste page, I was so happy! My husband also gave me a workshop to attend and I received some sustainable clothes from the Wearethought website”. 

*Colafritto is a cooking tool to drain the grease off of fried foods.

What do you do when going on trips?

“Homemade beeswraps (some receipts here), sandwich bags instead of plastic wrap, water-bottles, telescopic glasses, non-disposable straws and then the reusable juice packaging bags that we fill at every occasion”.

For personal care?

“Homemade solid soaps, reusable cotton swabs, a menstrual cup for me, homemade hand cream and toothpaste, a bamboo toothbrush or with interchangeable heads, a homemade deodorant and a bag that collects microfibres in the washing machine (microfibre bag)”.

For home cleaning?

“Dish soap and eco bulk detergents. Now with the help of akunandzilo I’m starting to also produce liquid soap, but I’m just a beginner”.

And with the grocery shopping, what did you choose to do?

“I choose the bulk shopping, in the few shops that allow it: fruit and vegetables from the greengrocer with my bags (sometimes even in the supermarket, always with my bags and it doesn’t matter if I pay the penny for their bags), going to the butcher with my containers and so also  for legumes, rice, cous cous… This is a little bit more difficult, due to the opening hours of the small shops compared to the ones of the supermarkets, and initially everything seemed more expensive, but in reality now our diet is much much more varied and creative, and the cost is more or less similar, but you can see the quality!”.

What do you choose as stationery?

 “For the question of study and notes, with a lot of effort I am trying to download books on Kindle device, to write I use the correctbook notebooks, they are magnificent and I would suggest them to anyone. They are born from a Dutch project, the only negative side is in fact the delivery from Holland, but I think anyway that the purpose and frequency with which shipments are used are also important, and the choice of certain sites instead of others (in short,  perfection is far away). They are notebooks with holes, to which you can then add sheets, they are like the white boards so they can therefore be deleted and rewritten to infinity. I have the size of a purse for the shopping list or similar, an A3 and an A4 notebook, for reports at meetings, notes, exercises, draft tests. I also have piston fountain pens for when I have to fill out documents or sign or write by hand”. 

An advice to mothers and fathers who want to start this journey but are afraid of challenges, including lack of time?

“I suggest not starting by wanting to do everything, but choosing a field that is considered ‘easier’ and where more effort can be made. For example, I started with the bathroom because there were so many feasible tricks, from toilet paper made from recycled paper to the toothbrush. Regarding the time I don’t know, in the end it can take just half an hour to cook at home or handmade: not just a restaurant menu right away, you can get there in time! Certainly, having someone who works with you helps, but the small groups of friends and friends who homemake can easily be created!”.

Con avanzi di filo di cotone abbiamo creato semplici spugne per lavare in modo ecologico i nostri piatti, al posto delle spugnette sintetiche! 

Riutilizzabili, lavabili, efficaci ed economiche, le spugne fatte in casa si stanno diffondendo. Sono chiamate tawashi, anche se questo termine giapponese indica una spazzola ispida in fibra vegetale, di solito marrone, tenuta insieme da fil di ferro. Queste invece sono più morbide. Possono essere create anche per il viso, per il corpo e per struccarsi. 

In internet non mancano i tutorial con le istruzioni visive da seguire passo passo. Alcune riguardano il filo in microfibra, ma sostituiamo con un filo in materiale naturale, come il cotone biologico o avanzi di gomitoli che abbiamo già in casa o ancora da strisce ricavate da una vecchia maglietta di cotone.

Basta lavarle e metterle ad asciugarle su un termosifone o all’aria aperta dopo ogni utilizzo e ogni tanto un lavaggio in lavatrice.

Durano davvero tanto e mettono allegria in cucina. Ne trovate di tutte le forme!

English: From leftovers of thread or fabric, the ecological sponges for our home!

With leftover cotton threads we have created simple sponges to wash our dishes in an ecological way, instead of using synthetic sponges!
Reusable, washable, effective and economical, homemade sponges are spreading. They are called tawashi, although this Japanese term refers to a bristly brush made of vegetable fibre, usually brown, held by a wire. These are softer instead. They can also be created for the face, body and to remove make-up.
On the internet there are many tutorials with visual instructions to follow step by step. Some relate to the microfiber thread, but we replace it with a natural material thread, such as organic cotton or balls of yarn that we already have at home or from strips made from an old cotton shirt.
Just wash them and put them to dry on a radiator or in the open air after each use and every so often a machine washing.

They last really long and bring joy to the kitchen. You can find them in all shapes!

Una delle convinzioni che ho è che per scrivere su un sito sia necessario leggere, studiare, informarsi sempre su ciò di cui si scrive. Certo non ci sente mai pronti: stare al passo con quello che accade nel mondo richiede attualmente ritmi rapidi, essere aggiornati sulle nuove tecnologie e scoperte comporta un impegno costante, leggere tutto ciò che al giorno d’oggi è facilmente a disposizione su un argomento è un’impresa, selezionare le fonti sicure è sfidante. Ma ritengo sia necessario per comprendere, proporre, descrivere, raccontare, spiegare, confrontarsi su un tema di cui ci si occupa. E praticamente diventa un obbligo se come nel nostro caso si tengono lezioni e workshop. Nel percorso di aggiornamento rientrano anche i corsi (nell’ultimo anno ne ho seguiti 5 sull’argomento moda, moda sostenibile, design, sostenibilità). Leggerei tre libri al giorno su queste tematiche!

Da una parte, il corso sulle strategie sostenibili di business (Harvard) mi ha rincuorato con un bellissimo messaggio positivo e la possibilità di cambiare la gestione aziendale orientandola a un solido scopo sociale e/o ambientale (diverso dalla formale mission) con risultati economici positivi nel lungo termine. Si può essere sostenibili e profittevoli, si può gestire in modo efficiente un’azienda prestando attenzione alle persone e all’ambiente. Credo in questo fortemente, al punto da voler orientare un nuovo modo di fare consulenza ad aziende e altre piccole/grandi organizzazioni verso forti obiettivi sociali e ambientali, con risultati positivi per tutti gli attori coinvolti, per le comunità in cui operano, per la natura circostante. Una domanda di un compito del corso: “Una singola azienda che agisce da sola può avere un grande impatto su clienti, dipendenti e comunità. Ma può avere un impatto al di là del suo mondo particolare? Se sì come?”. Così ho risposto al compito:

“Sì, penso che il loro impatto sia come una pietra gettata in un lago, producendo cerchi sempre più grandi che creano onde e muovono l’acqua intorno. È come un effetto a catena: se hanno un impatto su clienti, dipendenti e comunità allora clienti, dipendenti e comunità a loro volta creeranno un impatto simile, moltiplicando e diffondendo l’effetto. Se le singole aziende valorizzano la sostenibilità e il rispetto per le persone e l’ambiente, tali valori – attraverso i loro comportamenti e le loro azioni – influenzeranno i clienti, i dipendenti e quindi le comunità”.

Dall’altra parte, il corso teorico e pratico presso il London College of Fashion (University of Art London) sul design sostenibile nella moda mi ha fatto toccare con mano le sfide dei designer di oggi e riflettere su quanto sia in fondo stimolante vivere in questo momento, in cui la creatività è la chiave per individuare tutte le opportunità che abbiamo per cambiare il sistema della moda (e non solo). Vedere da vicino le opzioni tra cui possiamo scegliere in fase di creazione degli indumenti mi ha portato a riflettere ancora di più sulla responsabilità dei designer.

“In molti modi, la crisi ambientale è una crisi del design. È una conseguenza di come gli oggetti sono fatti, gli edifici sono costruiti e i paesaggi utilizzati”. (Van Der Ryn, 2004)

Abbiamo gli strumenti per ideare e realizzare soluzioni per vestirsi (e in generale per vivere) minimizzando il nostro impatto negativo sulla natura, oltre che sulle persone coinvolte e sugli animali.

Un gruppo di studio internazionale (siamo arrivati da Ucraina, Spagna, Italia, India, Brasile, Ungheria, Singapore, Giappone, Regno Unito) dà speranza di diffondere buone nuove pratiche di settore nel mondo! Grazie all’insegnante Noorin Khamisani, fondatrice del brand sostenibile Outsider, per tutti gli input creativi. Abbiamo provato insieme ad applicare l’upcycling, inventandoci nuovi usi di giacche da uomo destinate ai rifiuti. Abbiamo sperimentato la sfida del design zero waste, per creare senza produrre alcuno scarto con i tessuti a disposizione. Abbiamo fatto il pieno di stimoli per creare e di positività sul futuro del settore nonostante le complesse sfide!

Un modo nuovo di progettare, produrre e gestire è possibile (e necessario), ci crediamo fortemente.

English – Dress Ecode’s lifestyle: Behind the scenes – A new way of designing, producing and managing is possible

One of the beliefs I have is that to write on a website it is necessary to read, study, always inquire about what is written. Certainly you never feel ready: keeping up with what is happening in the world currently requires rapid rhythms, being up to date on new technologies and discoveries involves constant effort, reading everything that is readily available on a topic today is a company, selecting the trustable sources is challenging. But I think it is necessary to understand, to propose, to describe, to narrate, to explain, to confront oneself on a theme we are dealing with. And practically it becomes an obligation if, as in our case, lessons and workshops are held. Courses are also included in the growing path (in the last year I have followed 5 of them on the topic of fashion, sustainable fashion, design, sustainability). I would read three books a day on those issues!

On the one hand, the course on sustainable business strategies (Harvard) has encouraged me with a beautiful positive message and the possibility of changing business management, orienting it towards a solid social and/or environmental purpose (different from the formal mission) with positive economic results in the long term. You can be sustainable and profitable, you can efficiently manage a company by paying attention to people and the environment. I strongly believe in this, to the point of wanting to orientate a new way of consulting companies and other small/large organisations towards strong social and environmental objectives, with positive results for all the actors involved, for the communities in which they operate, for nature surrounding. A question of a course homework: “Individual firms acting alone can have a great impact on customers, employees and communities. But can they have an impact beyond their particular worlds? If so how?”. That was my reply:

“Yes, I think their impact is like a stone thrown in a lake, producing circles larger and larger that create waves and move the water around. It’s like a chain effect: if they have an impact on customers, employees and communities then customers, employees and communities on their own create a similar impact, multiplying and spreading the effect. If individual firms value sustainability and respect for people and the environment, those values – through their behaviours and actions – will affect clients, employees and then the communities”.

On the other hand, the theoretical and practical course at the London College of Fashion (University of Art London) on sustainable fashion design made me touch the challenges of today designers and reflect on how stimulating it is to live in this moment, in which creativity is the key to identifying all the opportunities we have to change the fashion system (and not only). Seeing the options we can choose from when creating garments has led me to think even more about the responsibility of designers.

“In many ways, the environmental crisis is a design crisis. It is a consequence of how things are made, buildings are constructed, and landscapes are used”. (Van Der Ryn, 2004)

We have the tools to design and implement solutions to dress (and generally live) by minimizing our negative impact on nature, as well as on the people involved and animals.

An international study group (we arrived from Ukraine, Spain, Italy, India, Brazil, Hungary, Singapore, Japan, United Kingdom) gives hope to spread good new industry practices around the world! Thanks to the teacher Noorin Khamisani, founder of the sustainable brand Outsider, for all the creative inputs. We tried together to apply the upcycling, inventing new uses for men’s jackets that were going to be wasted. We have experienced the challenge of zero waste design, to create without producing any waste with the available fabrics. We have been full of inspirations to create and be positive about the future of the sector despite the complex challenges!

A new way of designing, producing and managing is possible (and necessary), we strongly believe in it.

Mi piace modificare, riparare, reinventare, recuperare indumenti, soprattutto se hanno una storia, un valore sentimentale, un significato affettivo o se sono molto amati da chi li possiede. Quando poi è di qualcuno davvero tanto vicino a te e quel capo, dopo parecchi anni, quasi identifica per te quella persona, la sua riparazione si carica di un gran significato.

Mi piace il lato creativo, far funzionare il cervello per trovare una soluzione, immaginare. Mi piace il momento in cui arriva nella testa l’idea giusta.

Oggi vi racconto la storia del recupero di una giacca. Di sé per non ha nulla di speciale, è una giacca da uomo come un’altra, tra il blu e il nero, calda, comoda, sportiva. Questa giacca però identifica per me mio fratello.

La comprò una ventina di anni fa. Quando era un ragazzino. Sì, una ventina. Alla nuova generazione sembrerà una cosa da alieni, tranne per quelli che hanno sentito parlare di minimalismo tra le tendenze attuali. Ma, prima dell’avvento del minimalismo come definito modernamente, mio fratello era già super minimal, soprattutto per l’abbigliamento (sui libri a casa nostra invece il “massimalismo” ha sempre prevalso ).

Con quella giacca lo vedevo uscire di casa, pedalare sulla sua bicicletta anche quando fuori si gelava, portare a spasso la nostra cagnolina, andare a scuola. Chissà quante ne ha viste quella giacca! Se ne è andata anche in giro per il mondo. Sempre quella giacca. E nulla contavano le parole di mamma quando gli proponeva nel tempo di comprarne un’altra. Un po’ come l’orsetto che teneva sempre con sé, un po’ come la coperta di Linus, quella giacca sembrava dargli protezione e conforto, era una certezza. Capita di sentirsi bene con qualcosa addosso, un indumento che ci fa sentire a nostro agio, che ci avvolge, che ci rilassa, capisco il suo affezionarsi a quella giacca.

Vent’anni. A un certo punto, per quanto resistente e di buoni materiali, ha dato segni di cedimento. Di questo però non me ne sono accorta, perché in vent’anni di cose ne sono successe tante, tra cui siamo andati a vivere in due città diverse. Me ne sono resa conto qualche mese fa, quando con tenerezza mia cognata mostrandola mi ha chiesto: “Senti, non è che per caso si può fare qualcosa per recuperarla?”. Avevano già provato da chi si occupa di riparazioni ma senza successo… Come l’ho vista ho detto sì, potevo forse non provare ad aggiustare proprio quella giacca? 

Dei polsini è rimasto uno sfilacciamento. Qua e là la stoffa si è un pochino aperta (di pochi millimetri). La cerniera non funziona più, come capita spesso nelle giacche a vento. Comunque vorrei scrivere alla North Sails, perché non si può dire il materiale non sia buono, vista la durata.

“Non si possono scucire i polsini, ma si può cucire sopra”, penso guardandola. Grazie alla solita merceria, con un tessuto elastico provo a risolvere il problema. Il cambio della cerniera è invece più semplice, grazie a tanti tutorial on line, ma questa volta ho chiesto aiuto a una piccola sartoria vicino casa perché non riuscivo in quel momento a utilizzare le mani per un lavoro che richiede un pochino di forza e pazienza. Pian piano invece ho ricucito le piccole aperture. Mentre lavoravo sulla giacca, pensavo proprio a come un capo possa riempirsi di significati e ricordi. Alla fine è solo un pezzo di tessuto, ma acquista un valore enorme, soprattutto nel tempo. Non so se capita anche voi. Se avete una storia sul tema fatemi sapere.

Vi mostro più sotto le foto del prima e dopo. La faccia di mio fratello quando gliel’ho portata riparata? Indescrivibile. Mentre mia cognata e io siamo andate avanti a chiacchierare, è sparito di là in camera a provarla e riprovarla, rimirandola. Le soddisfazioni del recupero di indumenti amati!

English – Dress ECOde lifestyle: This is not a normal jacket repair! A very personal story

I like changing, repairing, reinventing, recovering clothes, especially if they have a history, a sentimental value, an emotional meaning or if they are very loved by those who own them. Then when it comes from someone really close to you and that garment, after several years, almost identifies that person for you, its repair is charged with a great meaning. I like the creative side, to make the brain work to find a solution and to imagine. I like the moment when the right idea comes into your head.

Today I tell you the story of the recovery of a jacket. In and of itself he has nothing special, he is a men’s jacket like any other, between blue and black, warm, comfortable, sporty. But this jacket identifies my brother for me.

He bought it twenty years ago. When he was a kid. Yes, twenty. To the new generation will seem an alien thing, except for those who have heard of minimalism among current trends. But, before the advent of minimalism as modernly defined, my brother was already super minimal, especially for clothing (on the books at home instead of the “maximalism” has always prevailed ).

With that jacket I could see him leaving the house, riding his bicycle even when it was freezing outside, walking our little dog, going to school. Who knows how many things that jacket saw! It has also gone around the world. Always that jacket. And Mom’s words didn’t count when she proposed him to buy another over time. A bit like the little bear he always kept with him, a bit like Linus’s blanket, that jacket seemed to give him protection and comfort, it is a certainty. It happens to feel good with something on, a garment that makes us feel at ease, that wraps us up, that relaxes us, I can understand his attachment to that jacket.

Twenty years. At some point, however strong and with good materials, it gave signs of strain. But I did not notice this, because in twenty years many things have happened, among which we went to live in two different cities. I realised a few months ago, when my sister-in-law sweetly showed her and asked me: “Listen, isn’t it just by chance that something can be done to recover it?”. They had already tried by those who deal with repairs but without success… As I saw it I said yes, could I not try to fix that jacket?

Almost an unravelling is left of the cuffs. Here and there the fabric is slightly open (a few millimeters). The zipper no longer works, as often happens in anoraks. However I would like to write to the North Sails, because it cannot be said the material is not good, given the duration.

“You can’t unstitch the cuffs, but you can sew them on”, I think looking at it. Thanks to the usual haberdashery, with an elastic fabric I try to solve the problem. The change of the zipper is instead easier, thanks to many online tutorials, but this time I asked for help from a small tailor’s shop near my house because at that moment I could not use my hands for a job that requires a little strength and patience. Slowly instead I sewed up the small openings. While working on the jacket, I was thinking about how a garment can be filled with meanings and memories. In the end it is just a piece of fabric, but it acquires enormous value, especially over time. I don’t know if it happens to you too. If you have a story on the subject let me know.

I show you below the photos of the before and after. My brother’s face when I took it repaired? Indescribable. While my sister-in-law and I went on chatting, she disappeared into their bedroom to try it and try it again, gazing at it. The satisfactions of recovering beloved clothing!

Camminando al mercato Monti (di Roma) ci fermiamo all’improvviso perché sembra di entrare dentro una fiaba: lampade uscite dalla mente fantasiosa di qualcuno che con occhi di bambino le ha create e che se hai occhi di bambino puoi apprezzare. Per un attimo mi è parso di ritrovarmi a parlare con una di queste ironiche creature luminose, ricordando le conversazioni notturne di Amélie (Il favoloso mondo di Amelie) con la sua abat-jour! Queste lampade, ne avrebbero di storie da raccontare…

Vi narrerebbero di come sono nate da Art Cocò unendo dadi, rondelle, vecchi ottoni, barre filettate, portalampade, pulsantini, porcellana, ceramica, legno e scatole di latta spesso dimenticate in polverose soffitte.

Vi mostrerebbero uno a uno i loro pezzi raccontandovene l’origine, orgogliose della loro nascita ecologica e della loro storia che a sua volta racchiude tanti racconti quanti i loro componenti: tutti oggetti destinati all’immondizia, puliti, rivisti e trasformati invece in sbalorditive creazioni dalle idee e dalle mani abili di Grazia Cecconi e Angela Iacobellis.

“Sulla barra costruiamo una storia”. Mi fermerei lì ad ascoltarle raccontare.

“Il braccio di un vecchio lampadario può diventare lo stelo di una lampada da tavolo, sfere di vetro sopravvissute al declino di lampadari di murano nidi per uccelli, e vecchie scatole di latta, la base di appoggio per cani e gatti in porcellana o facce anni ’40 di ragazzini impertinenti”. “Intanto piume, passamanerie e vecchie stoffe in seta liberano dall’anonimato ventole e paralumi troppo spesso noiosamente beige”.

Ogni componente è riciclato, nulla è nuovo. “A parte le nostre idee, un trapano a colonna, un piccolo frullino con dischi a ceramica ferro e plastica, tantissime frese, pinzette, tenaglie cacciaviti, e tutta la fantasia. Singoli elementi nelle nostre mani diventano progetto”.

Ecco come la fantasia può salvare l’ambiente.

Com’è nato il progetto Art Cocò? E come nascono queste lampade?

“Siamo 2 designer, abituate ad impaginare segni e immagini nello spazio. Abituate anche al montaggio video, un’alternanza ritmica, che non deve mai annoiare. Aggiungi che la pubblicità e il design ti abituano a veder realizzati in breve tempo i progetti creativi. Ti insegnano ad amare video e immagini vintage (pensa alla fotografia americana dagli anni ’30 ai ‘50) ed a mischiare queste vecchie immagini a segni moderni per ‘definire’ messaggi nuovi ed inattesi. Da qui, il passo è breve. Basta aggiungere la manualità alla progettazione e nascono oggetti, lampade nel nostro caso, che rispettano tutto l’iter creativo del messaggio pubblicitario. Per questo le lampade Art Cocò hanno un nome. Perché ognuna di esse è una storia nell’ambito della quale è possibile riconoscersi.

Una storia che fa leva sulle emozioni, sui ricordi, con l’obiettivo a volte di strappare un sorriso. Una storia che spesso  guida la ricerca di oggetti, un grande lavoro fatto di mercatini, robivecchi, cantine, e vecchie zie.

Ma vale anche tutto il contrario. A volte vedi un oggetto, un vecchio lampadario, una testa di porcellana e immagini quale lampada potrebbe diventare e quale nome potrebbe avere.

Poi c’è la bellezza di riciclare tutto, fino all’ultimo dado, di non produrre niente e usare solo materiali già esistenti spesso rotti o dimenticati. Un vero restyling di forme e materie”.

Da Art Cocò niente è fatto in serie e non esiste lampada uguale all’altra perché la progettazione inizia dallo smontaggio di vecchi lampadari o dal ritrovamento di una magnifica scatola in latta con tanto di decorazione, forma e colore.

English – In the fabulous world of Art Cocò’s bright creatures: when imagination saves the environment!

Walking at the Monti market (in Rome), we suddenly stop because it seems to enter into a fairy tale: lamps come out of the imaginative mind of someone who created them with childlike eyes and that can be appreciated if you have child eyes. For a moment it seemed to me to find myself talking to one of these ironic luminous creatures, remembering the nocturnal conversations of Amélie (Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain English) with her abat-jour! These lamps, they would have stories to tell for sure…

They would tell you how they were born from Art Cocò by combining nuts, washers, old brass, threaded rods, lamp holders, small buttons, porcelain, ceramic, wood and tin boxes often forgotten in dusty attics. They would show their pieces one by one telling you their origin, proud of their ecological birth and their history, which in turn contains as many stories as their components: all objects destined for garbage, cleaned, revised and transformed into stunning creations by the ideas and skillful hands of Grazia Cecconi and Angela Iacobelli. “On each rod we build a story”. I would stop there and listen to them telling.

“The arm of an old chandelier can become the stem of a table lamp, glass spheres that have survived the decline of Murano chandeliers, bird boxes, and old tin boxes, the base for porcelain dogs and cat faces or 1940s impertinent kid faces”. “Meanwhile, feathers, passementerie and old silk fabrics free fans and lampshades from the anonymity too often boringly beige”.

Every component is recycled, nothing is new. “Apart from our ideas, a column drill, a small grinder with iron and plastic ceramic discs, lots of cutters, tweezers, screwdriver tongs, and all the imagination. Individual elements in our hands become projects”.

Here’s how imagination can save the environment.

How was the Art Cocò project born? And how are these lamps born?

“We are two designers, used to create layout of signs and images in space. Also used to video editing, a rhythmic alternation, which should never be boring. Add that advertising and design will get you used to seeing creative projects realized in a short time. They teach you to love vintage videos and images (think of American photography from the 1930s to the 1950s) and mix these old images with modern signs to ‘define’ new and unexpected messages. From here, the step is short. Just add the manual skills to the design and the objects are born, lamps in our case, which respect the whole creative process of the advertising message. This is why the Art Cocò lamps have a name. Because each of them is a story in which it is possible to recognize oneself.

A story that relies on emotions, on memories, with the aim sometimes to obtain a smile. A story that often guides the search for objects, a great job made up of flea markets, junk shops, basements, and old aunts.

But the opposite is also true. Sometimes you see an object, an old chandelier, a porcelain head and imagine which lamp could become and what name it might have.

Then there is the beauty of recycling everything, up to the last nut, of producing nothing and of using only existing materials that are often broken or forgotten. A true restyling of forms and materials“.

At Art Cocò nothing is done in series and there is no lamp like the other because the design starts with the dismantling of old chandeliers or the discovery of a magnificent tin box with decoration, shape and color.

Uno dei progetti a cui teniamo molto è quello dell’eredità della balena con la plastica (Plastic Whale Heritage). Ci dà la possibilità di incontrare piccoli e grandi alunni nelle scuole italiane per raccontare della storia di una balena con un messaggio per tutti noi, dell’inquinamento che produciamo con la plastica e della spedizione a cui ho partecipato l’anno scorso per ripulire dai rifiuti dove è stata ritrovata la balena.

Venerdì ho incontrato a Modena 4 classi della scuola primaria Galileo Galilei e 5 classi della scuola primaria San Geminiano (di Cognento). Vorremmo essere in grado di descrivere i volti dei bambini quando seguono ciò che è successo alla balena, il loro trasporto, le reazioni di alcuni… La storia della balena con la plastica è raccontata nel documentario di Sky “A plastic whale”, che mostra il ritrovamento di questo animale con lo stomaco pieno di sacchetti di plastica in un’isola della Norvegia nel 2017 e cosa sia successo in seguito a questo triste episodio. A volte da eventi molto spiacevoli nasce qualcosa di positivo, è questo uno dei messaggi che portiamo: la balena aveva per noi un messaggio, ci sprona ad aprire gli occhi e a trovare una soluzione ai rifiuti abbandonati negli oceani e in generale nella natura.

Racconto ai bambini, con video, foto e parole, della spedizione in Norvegia dove in più di 150 volontari da oltre 12 paesi ci siamo ritrovati per raccogliere oltre una tonnellata di rifiuti di plastica, nella zona in cui la balena ha deciso di portare il messaggio (Clicca qui per il video).

La storia permette di affrontare con loro, parlando di mari e di pesci, il tema della plastica usa-e-getta, dei tempi di smaltimento, della provenienza di questo tipo di rifiuti nei mari e delle piccole azioni quotidiane per affrontare il problema dell’inquinamento.

Le domande sono sempre tante, in ogni scuola sono diverse. Alcune riguardano le caratteristiche della balena (“quanto era lunga? “, “di che specie era?”, “era maschio o femmina?”, “era adulta?”), altre il tipo di rifiuti trovati, altre ancora il perché di questi nostri comportamenti verso la natura (è il quesito più arduo a cui rispondere). Tantissimi gli interventi dei bimbi che raccontano di aver trovato e raccolto rifiuti in mare o sulla spiaggia e di quelli che descrivono cosa utilizzano al posto di oggetti usa-e-getta di plastica o di come li riciclino. Qualcuno ci racconta dei moniti ai genitori per evitare di inquinare!

Venerdì era anche la giornata dello sciopero scolastico per il clima. Le classi della scuola Galileo Galilei sono uscite in cortile per mostrare i loro cartelloni. Mi accorgo che una classe di seconda elementare ha fatto qualcosa di più: ha disegnato dopo la presentazione qualcosa sul tema della balena. Uno a uno desiderano mostrare i loro disegni e sono talmente meravigliosi che vogliamo mostrarveli qui (più sotto trovate le foto), purtroppo senza poterne rivelare i bei volti per proteggere la loro privacy.

In cortile Margherita si avvicina e mi dice: “Sai che quando facevi vedere la balena ho pianto?…”. Ci racconta in un video (più sotto) delle sue emozioni.

Nella scuola San Geminiano, proprio al termine della presentazione, si avvicina una bambina. È stato un attimo: mi abbraccia fortissimo e dice “grazie”. Corre via e resto lì, sciogliendomi, pensando come tutti i momenti di sconforto che si vivono portando avanti questi progetti sembrino lontani quando ti accorgi dai disegni che questi adulti di domani fanno loro i messaggi di salvaguardia dell’ambiente, che ti ringraziano intuendo le ragioni del tuo impegno, che si commuovono davanti alle difficoltà che creiamo agli animali e alla natura.

Grazie a voi, piccoli alunni, per aver ascoltato la storia della balena! Grazie anche agli insegnanti sensibili al tema e disposti a organizzare questi incontri!

English: Dress Ecode’s lifestyle – We tell you about our meetings on the ‘Plastic Whale’ in schools!

One of the projects we care a lot about is the Plastic Whale Heritage one. It gives us the opportunity to meet young students in Italian schools to tell about the story of a whale with a message for all of us, about the pollution we produce with plastic and about the expedition I attended last year to clean up from the waste where the whale was found.

On last Friday I met in Modena 4 classes of the Galileo Galilei primary school and 5 classes of the San Geminiano primary school (of Cognento). We would like to be able to describe the faces of children when they follow what happened to the whale, their transport, the reactions of some… The story of the whale with plastic is told in the Sky documentary “A plastic whale”, which shows the discovery of this animal with a stomach full of plastic bags in an Norwegian island in 2017 and what happened after this sad episode. Sometimes from very unpleasant events, something positive is born, this is one of the messages we carry: the whale had a message for us, it urges us to open our eyes and find a solution to the waste left in the oceans and in nature in general.

To the children, with videos, photos and words, of the expedition to Norway where in over 150 volunteers from over 12 countries we gathered to collect over a ton of plastic waste, in the area where the whale decided to bring the message (Click here for the video).

The story allows us to deal with them, talking about seas and fish, the subject of disposable plastic, disposal times, the origin of this type of waste in the seas and small daily actions to tackle the problem of pollution.

There are always so many questions, in every school they are different. Some concern the characteristics of the whale (“How long was it?”, “What was it?”, “Was it male or female?”), others the type of waste found, others the reason for our behaviour towards nature (it is the most difficult question to answer). Many are the interventions of the children who tell of having found and collected waste at sea or on the beach and those that describe what they use instead of disposable plastic objects or how they recycle them. Someone tells us of warnings to parents to avoid polluting!

Friday was also the global school strike for climate day. The classes of the Galileo Galilei school went out in the courtyard to show their messages on posters. I realise that a second-grade class did something more: after the presentation they designed something on the theme of the whale. One by one they want to show their drawings and they are so wonderful that we want to show them to you here (below you will find the photos), unfortunately without being able to reveal their beautiful faces to protect their privacy.

In the courtyard Margherita approaches and tells me: “You know that when you showed the whale I cried? …”. She tells us in a video (below) of his emotions.

In the San Geminiano school, at the very end of the presentation, a little girl approaches. It was a moment: she hugs me very strongly and says “thank you”. She runs away and I stay there, with the heart melted, thinking how all the moments of discomfort, that we live by carrying out these projects, seem far away when you realise from the drawings that these adults of tomorrow assimilate the messages about protecting the environment, that they thank you realising the reasons of your commitment, that they are touched by the difficulties we create for animals and nature.

Il lino, una delle fibre più sostenibili, é resistente, duraturo, naturale, fresco per l’estate e… caldo d’inverno (https://dress-ecode.com/2018/07/08/un-tessuto-ecologico-e-fresco-per-le-calde-giornate-il-lino/ )! Lo scopriamo con Marta Cernovskaja, fondatrice del brand Lemuel MC, testandolo per le vie di Notting Hill a Londra in una bella giornata fredda e ventosa. 

Marta ha sempre amato il lino. Quando per ragioni di salute ha interrotto il suo precedente lavoro come designer assistant e ha deciso di iniziare con un suo brand, non ha avuto dubbi su quale materiale utilizzare. Il lino è anche una fibra ottima per chi ha problemi di allergie e necessariamente deve evitare il contatto con sostanze sintetiche.

Prima di Londra, Marta viveva in Lituania, un paese in cui la produzione di lino è attualmente molto diffusa. È qui che da uno stesso fornitore nel tempo acquista metri di tessuto destinato altrimenti a non essere utilizzato. Lo porta con sé tornando dai suoi viaggi in Lituania.

Oltre a utilizzare eccedenze e rimanenze di tessuti, Marta lavora su ordinazione, non creando quindi invenduto da smaltire. Ogni piccolo pezzo di tessuto viene utilizzato. Marta ha adottato anche nella vita una filosofia zero waste e responsabile: “Ho sempre detestato i rifiuti. Non mi piace buttare via le cose, amo invece le cose fatte bene che puoi apprezzare”.

Vestiti, pantaloni, maglie, giacche, sciarpe, cravatte, camice, con linee morbide e comodi da indossare, per uomo e per donna di ogni taglia. Sono belli, eleganti, fatti a mano con cura, senza tempo. Richiedono particolari attenzioni? Può essere lavato facilmente con gli altri capi, non richiede speciali premure.  “Parte della bellezza del lino è che il lavaggio lo rende più morbido. Quando asciutto, pensiamo che le pieghe si aggiungano alla bellezza naturale unica del tessuto, ma possono essere stirate per un aspetto più raffinato”.

Il tessuto è certificato Oeko-Tex. Le etichette esterne sono realizzate, come gli abiti, a mano in lino. Marta sta pensando di realizzare in materiale naturale anche quelle interne. I bottoni sono in metallo. Il packaging è in carta velina o in carta da parati acquistata in charity shop.Le chiediamo quali sfide un brand sostenibile si trovi ad affrontare. “Non è difficile essere sostenibili, non riscontro particolari difficoltà nella produzione. Viviamo invece il problema di vedere sul mercato marchi che si dichiarano sostenibili, ma lo sono solo a parole. Il rischio é di perdere la fiducia dei consumatori, oltre a urtarci visto il nostro reale e sincero impegno”.

Incontriamo Marta da Daylesford (un negozio biologico) a Londra, davanti a un dolcetto e a una tazza di the (noi) e di caffè (lei), chiacchierando amabilmente di sostenibilità e delle nostre vite. Mi invita a testare i suoi abiti, mettendo alla prova una persona come me nelle temperature londinesi di questo periodo in una giornata di sole ma ventosa. Usciamo per le strade per scattare alcune foto. Il lino ha effettivamente diverse grammature e spessore, può essere fresco e leggero per l’estate ma più pesante e coprente per l’inverno. I colori più scuri lo adattano ancora di più alla stagione. “Non è solo per l’estate, non è solo per chi vive in campagna, il lino è per tutti, per ogni stagione e ragione”.

Linen, one of the most sustainable fibres, is resistant, long-lasting, natural, fresh in summer and… warm in winter (https://dress-ecode.com/2018/07/08/un-tessuto-ecologico-e-fresco-per-le-calde-giornate-il-lino)! We discovered it with Marta Cernovskaja, founder of the brand Lemuel MC, testing it through the streets of Notting Hill in London on a beautiful but cold and windy day.

Marta has always loved linen. When for health reasons she interrupted her previous job as a designer assistant and decided to start with her own brand, she had no doubts about which material to use. Linen is also an excellent fibre for those with allergies and must necessarily avoid contact with synthetic substances.

Before coming to London, Marta lived in Lithuania, a country where linen production is currently widespread. It is there that from the same supplier over time she purchases meters of fabric, that would otherwise not be used. She brings them with her back from her trips in Lithuania.

In addition to using fabric off-cuts and surpluses, Marta works on made to order, thus not creating unsold to be disposed of. Every little piece of fabric is used and not wasted. Marta has also adopted a zero waste and responsible philosophy in her life: “I have always loathed waste. I do not like throwing things out but love well-made things you can cherish”.

Clothes, trousers, sweaters, jackets, scarves, ties, shirts, with soft lines and comfortable to wear, for men and women of all sizes. They are beautiful, elegant, hand made with care, timeless. Do they require special attention? They can be easily washed with other garments, not requiring any special care. “Part of the beauty of linen is that the washing makes it softer. When dry, we think that the wrinkles add to the unique natural beauty of the fabric, but they can be ironed for a more refined look”.

The fabric is Oeko-Tex certified and the tag labels are made, like clothes, by hand in linen. Marta is planning to make internal labels in natural materials as well. The buttons are made of metal. The packaging is in tissue paper or wallpaper purchased in the charity shop.

We ask her what challenges a sustainable brand is facing. “It is not difficult to be sustainable, I do not find particular challenges in production. Instead, we experience the problem of seeing brands that claim to be sustainable on the market, but they are only in words. The risk is to lose the trust of consumers, and it is niggling for who has a real and sincere commitment”.

We met Marta in Daylesford (an organic farm shop) in London, in front of a cake and a cup of tea (us) and coffee (her), chatting amiably about sustainability and our lives. She invites me to test her clothes, testing a person like me in the London temperatures of this period, on a sunny but windy day. We went out on the streets to take some pictures. The linen actually has different weights and thickness, it can be fresh and light for the summer but heavier and thicker for the winter. The darker colours adapt it even more to the season. “It’s not just for the summer, it’s not just for the people who live in the country, linen is for everyone, for every season and reason”.

La percezione dello spreco di cibo è in testa, superando da 5 anni quella di altri sprechi. Il settore alimentare è quello in cui sembra di buttare di più per il 74% degli italiani. Mentre lo spreco idrico segue per il 48%, quindi gli sprechi legati a mobilità (25%) ed energie elettrica (22%). Meno evidenti gli sprechi di denaro (18%) e tempo (13%).

4/5 dello spreco (12 miliardi di euro) viene dalla nostre case ma non ne abbiamo percezione: dallo studio emerge che secondo gli italiani sono il commercio (negozi e grande distribuzione) e il settore pubblico la principale fonte di spreco.

Quasi la metà (48%) dichiara di buttare raramente il cibo, il 16% una volta al mese. Il dato è in miglioramento rispetto al passato, ma resta per più di un terzo (36%) un’abitudine frequente.

Secondo la nostra percezione, gettiamo 600 grammi di cibo ogni settimana, pari a un valore di 28 euro al mese.

In cima alla lista dei rimedi antispreco più utilizzati, la verifica in dispensa di ciò che serve davvero (65%), congelare i cibi che non possiamo mangiare a breve (61%), attenzione alle quantità quando si cucina (54%), controllo dell’edibilità degli alimenti scaduti prima di buttarli (52%), riutilizzo degli avanzi per nuove ricette (48%). Un terzo porta a casa già che resta dai pasti al ristorante. 

Cosa si dovrebbe fare secondo gli italiani? La maggior parte (72%) chiede di puntare sull’educazione alimentare. Falasconi spiega che non solo si tratta di formare e sensibilizzare nelle scuole, ma anche all’interno delle famiglie. Secondo Segrè stiamo perdendo l’abitudine di ricorrere alla preparazione di una lista della spesa ragionata prima di fare acquisti, importante e semplice strumento per evitare lo spreco. “La strada per raggiungere lo spreco zero è lunga ma l’importante è iniziare a camminare”.

Il testimonial della campagna 2018, Giobbe Covatta, ricorda come fu colpito in gioventù dalle ruspe che distruggono l’eccedenza di arance. “Vengo da una generazione dove quando cascava il pane per terra, mamma lo raccoglieva, ci soffiava sopra e lo rimetteva nel cestino del pane”. Neri Marcorè, presentandosi come nuovo testimonial della compagna per il 2019, ha chiuso la giornata.
