You can be (im)perfectly green mothers with a dress ECOde, as Anne-Laure tells us. This time we’re on home ground: after Anne-Laure, who is part of Dress ECOde, announced the arrival of a little creature to me, I kept repeating: “Why don’t you tell what you’re doing now that you’re a mother?”. Because the commitment must be shared, it can be useful for other mothers or mothers-to-be who try to be greener. Thus this interview was born. We also interviewed Elisa in the past about how to be mothers committed to sustainability. Now it’s our Anne’s (and her baby’s) turn. It’s also a way to celebrate Sasha’s arrival: welcome baby! Anne-Laure collaborates with Dress ECOde (find out more about her here), and has opened a podcast on the imperfection that is hidden in each of us when it comes to sustainability, The (Im)Perfect Green Girl. Hi Anne, I couldn’t wait to do this interview to tell you how a (im)perfect green mom wearing a Dress ECOde is living this moment of life! Thank you because in the end you accepted, I know this is a delicate moment, full of new things, lots to do, little time available. “Hi Arianna, thank you for the opportunity to tell what I’m experiencing in this beautiful adventure of both pregnancy and postpartum.” Anne, can you tell us how you tried to be careful about environmental impact while preparing to become a mother? “During my pregnancy, I tried to do the thing I had somewhat trained myself to do for the previous 2 years: limit purchases. I didn’t buy anything for the baby, except the 5 changes requested by the hospital, which I got second hand. As for me, I continued to follow a vegetarian diet. The only animal derivative that I ate a couple of times a month, if it happened, was cheese. I’ve also had the great fortune and privilege of being able to work from home, so I’ve severely limited my use of the car for commuting. Finally, as regards maternity clothing, I only bought 4 new items (1 jeans, 2 leggings and a shirt). I had to get them new for a very simple reason, unfortunately I couldn’t get them second hand: when you’re pregnant, you don’t know what size you are. And if you don’t try, you risk buying things that don’t fit you… I chose things that I can still wear today, after pregnancy! I took the other things from my closet. I believe that most of us have too big clothes in our closet… Here I have exhumed them with pleasure! Shirts, T-shirts, cotton trousers… Perhaps the luck of the summer season has also helped.” I like the choice of using items that one already has in one’s closet, things that you’ve found that look great on you. You did very well. The first piece of advice we always give is not to buy new things, but to use what we still have in our wardrobe and which we don’t wear. It seems to me an excellent idea, in addition to the commitment that you have tried to carry forward in various aspects. About the first clothes, where did you decide to get them, what was your choice for the first things to dress little Sasha? “As I said, the first dresses were the ones requested by the hospital (they asked for 5 bodysuits and 5 pajamas) and I got them all on Vinted, strictly in neutral colors, and with the “new with label” option. I also got some muslins, again on Vinted. Those are my favorite pieces, because we still use them all the time today and Sasha can’t move without a muslin in her hands! I also received lots of second-hand gifts from friends and my sister: sheets, blankets, onesies… and even soft toys… Tons of soft toys!” Soft toys are a classic of gifts for children. Who knows how many have arrived and how many more will come! Anne, do you have shops to recommend for purchases? “Unfortunately I have no shops to recommend. Or rather, we all know the few retailers specializing in items for mothers-to-be, new mothers, babies and children… But they are a bit like the fast fashion chains we know. Almost everything is made in China. I tried to look for shops, even online, for ethical items, but there are really very few of them and above all, let me say it here, they really cost an exaggeration. I am thinking of maternity or nursing clothing. You find little and what you find of good quality you pay very dearly. I’m thinking of the famous hospital nightdresses… I’ve seen them even for 75-80 euros… Now, you understand that I can’t pay 80 euros for a nightgown that I’ll probably wear a couple of times, and I’ll never wear more in life, if not for a possible second child of course! It doesn’t work like this: a garment can’t cost that much. Same reasoning for the clothes of the little ones. A 0-1 month dress really lasts 1 month. And if it suits you, you can put it on a dozen times at most… And in fact, in my opinion, this is a big problem. There is no middle ground. Or rather, yes there is: the second hand. Out of curiosity, take a look at Vinted in the children’s categories: there are so many new things with tags… Too many indeed.” I believe it Anne… also in the other categories, for adults, in accessories, there are so many garments, so many new objects that I can’t hardly believe it is the same for children. Probably in this category the fact that many gifts are received has more influence. “Here I send a message to those who read and will listen: do not buy things or clothes for a new mother. She will be so overwhelmed that she probably won’t even have time to wash and put on the 39 bodines, socks, and various ties that she will receive as a gift. Rather give her time. House cleaning, a pan of lasagna and things to freeze, take out the garbage, offer a hairdresser service or a beautician at home,… No bodysuits, no soft toys, no dresses… I ask you with all my heart the heart.” It’s funny to ask for time to take out the garbage or for other things, but actually Anne I find it a beautiful message. True in all circumstances. Whenever we give a gift we should always think about what the other person would like to receive. Even more so if you are attentive to sustainability, because you risk turning what you give away into waste. We had dedicate an article on the subject for Christmas. I very much agree with you on sending this message. I actually find it precious to meet a difficulty that a mother may have, which is precisely that of lack of time, immersed in a new moment of life so different from before and with little space for herself. Thank you. When looking for clothing for your little girl, is there anything you’ve done that you’re having a hard time finding? “Yes, a cap. I had a hard time finding a winter cap. I searched on Vinted earlier and didn’t find what I was looking for. Then, I went to the haberdashery in my town but they didn’t have them, their supplier no longer sold the made in Italy ones… I ordered a cap on the ethical fashion website, but after two weeks they called me to tell me they had run out. So, I had to settle for a well-known brand of children’s clothing, with standard materials… It was cold outside and she couldn’t go out without a hat! I got it a little bigger so will use it a little more I hope!” This research struck me, I remember Anne. We met, we talked about it, we tried to see traditional shops. A cap that is taken for granted to be worn by children, especially towards the winter season. I can understand the frustration. Companies should understand what the logic is. Apart from the dresses, how did it go with the rest (the cot, the cradle, the games, etc.)? “I must say that I was very lucky for all the rest of the accessories: my sister gave me a cot, a bouncer, a car high chair, a sensory mat, puppets, soft toys and little books… And even a colleague of mine gave me a trio used very little in perfect condition… This was really a beautiful gift. I don’t know if he will listen to this interview but I take the opportunity to thank him again. I have few games for now, many come from cousins. I received some very nice new games, for now all made of wood and I’m very happy with them!” When I try to explain the beauty of the second-hand circuit, it’s also in this. It’s not just the item itself, but knowing that you’ve recovered it. To receive it as a gift from someone you know. There is joy on both sides, the happiness of having given something that can be useful to the other. Something that you find extra now, that becomes a desired object and with so much value for another person. Among the things you’ve done, which is the one you feel most satisfied with, most proud of yourself? “For now it’s the fact that I’ve managed to keep the minimalism I’ve always wanted from the beginning. But Christmas is coming and I think we will receive many things! But that’s okay. I think it is right that she grows up with the various ways of doing of the families from which she was born in order to be able to compare them and then choose when she grows up what she considers more coherent, more fair.” It seems an approach that indicates a lot of flexibility. We often find ourselves saying that this is what we need when we think of taking a path towards sustainability. Having a softer approach can lead people around to take a similar path. What instead have you found and find it difficult to do to be greener? “There are 2 things I’ve had to compromise on: self-production in the kitchen and cloth diapers. Anyone who claims to be able to cook lunches and dinners with a newborn is lying! It’s not physically possible. I could hardly take a shower. Sometimes I couldn’t even eat. Oh yes of course cook! So I ordered a lot of ready and packaged food. And I still do. However, trying to favor local productions thanks, for example, to buying groups such as L’alveare che dice sì. For diapers, on the other hand, I started very excited, then I started seeing the (crazy) prices of new cloth diapers on the internet. They drastically reduce the environmental impact, for sure. But they have an economic cost (about 25 euros each) and above all a mental one (I assure you that washing diapers is really the last thing you want to do when it’s finally silent in the house at 2 in the morning… So now I’ve got 4 new and 4 used diapers. I use them all in the same day, when I feel like it. Then I wash them all together and on the other days I use disposables.” Thank you for your opinion on cloth diapers too. It’s something subjective, I realize. I interviewed my cousin and her partner many years ago. The experience with washable cloths was a completely different thing, she recommended them despite the care that you too say, and she found herself fine in the end. In my opinion it depends on many factors. I thank you for having given this testimony, because someone who may find it difficult recognizes him/herself in your words and does not blame him/herself because perhaps he/she is unable to make this choice. Thanks also...

I received some very nice new games, for now all made of wood and I’m very happy with them!”

When I try to explain the beauty of the second-hand circuit, it’s also in this.

I think it is right that she grows up with the various ways of doing of the families from which she was born in order to be able to compare them and then choose when she grows up what she considers more coherent, more fair.”

It seems an approach that indicates a lot of flexibility.

Then I wash them all together and on the other days I use disposables.”

Thank you for your opinion on cloth diapers too. Thanks also for tips on food: if you have difficulty, you can find some solution. That of buying groups remains valid in general. Continuing on this sort of analysis of things done/not done, I ask you: what could you have done better and instead out of laziness you gave up or said “I can’t do it”?

“There are so many things that I had to take steps back on. But I’ll tell you that I’m glad I did it so. Because I would have lost my physical and mental health, which is the first thing especially in such an intense period, physically, emotionally and mentally. They are to be protected, always and in any case. A dear friend of mine once told me: ‘As adults, we have so many principles that we try to follow closely. Then the children arrive… And everything changes!’. Now, everything maybe not, but I had to review my priorities, that’s for sure. I am slowly learning to live this new reality.”

Physical and mental health are definitely a priority, as you say, even more so now, where you find yourself taking care of the life of another person who practically depends entirely on you. In this situation and in general, they are really two fundamental aspects for the life of the human being. What is the aspect in which you commit yourself most of all, the one where you try to be more sustainable, more attentive to green aspects?

“As for me, I’d tell you the food, which continues to be vegetarian. I have to say that I gave myself a piece of cheese, when the fridge and the stomach are empty and sometimes. Instead, for her, I undertake to limit purchases to what is strictly necessary and almost always buy second-hand things.”

You have already given a lot in this interview, but I ask you again: is there any advice you would like to give to mothers who want to be greener?

“It’s difficult to give advice, it was understood from this interview that there is nothing perfect in what I do right now, in this moment and above all I don’t aim for perfection. If I had to make a suggestion, it would be to buy the bare necessities before the birth, without getting caught up in anxiety, without listening too much to friends and relatives. Also buy second hand, don’t be afraid to buy second hand or even borrow. Ah, yes here is some advice, that perhaps I would have liked to receive among other things. Look for mom groups in your area. Counselors, local groups and associations. For one reason only, to network. I’m very honest, the loneliness you experience and feel during a pregnancy, especially during a first pregnancy, is really tough. Meeting other mothers even once in a while can really be of great support and by the way maybe you will know who can lend you that thing you need instead of buying it new.”

Thanks Anne. I chose to talk about this topic, about being a mom and also imperfectly green, and even with a Dress ECOde, with you precisely because I knew you’d adopt a very sincere, honest and down-to-earth approach. Because it’s very easy to tell stories, make videos, show how simple it is to be green mums. It’s very fashionable now and in recent years, maybe sending the message: ‘Yes, we can all do it!’. Of course, it is a path that is within everyone’s reach. Beautiful, but it is necessary to explain that it requires commitment, so that we don’t blame ourselves if we encounter difficulties. It is normal to have difficulties. And every time I find myself listening to them, and personally facing them, I reflect on an observation I often hear made: ‘Companies should enable us to do this, do that, eat this way, move this way, be able to buy …’. It is a concept that I repeat very often of multi-level responsibilities. We are all responsible, not just companies, governments. Everyone has to do their part. I realize listening to you in this interview, collecting the testimonies and very often in first person, to understand how much we actually still feel like rare birds. How much you dream of entering a shop or having easier access to solutions that are truly more sustainable! We’ll get there, the future is this, the future is here, it’s a matter of still having a little patience and commitment. Sharing like yours is welcome, even on a theme that is that of loneliness. It seems like a fabulous and splendid world, there is the joy of a new life. There is the emotion of having a son, a daughter next to you. However, there is also an aspect that shouldn’t be underestimated, which is that of the sensation, perhaps not always up, a little down, which may be due to this feeling of being alone. It can be crossed in this as in other phases of life and let us break down this taboo. Mental health, together with physical health, which we have said is a priority, is one of the issues increasingly linked to sustainability. I thank you for this too, as for all your sincerity, here in the interview and in the collaborative work you carry out within Dress ECOde.

Thanks Arianna. I really enjoyed doing this interview. All the best and hope to see you very soon. Ciao everyone!”

Ciao Anne, ciao little Sasha!

When I read an article on sustainability as “women’s issue” (Suzanne Elliot, 2021, Euronews), I was intrigued to the point of investigating and better understanding how and why there can be a green-feminine stereotype. Although in the current context of gender fluidity its significance could be questioned, it could help in a more effective dissemination of sustainability messages. Several studies indicate that there is a gender gap with regard to care for the environment. According to research by Mintel (2018), men waste more water and food, recycle less, are less careful about turning off lowering the heat when they leave the house, and less inclined to encourage family and friends to live more ethically. The difference in the frequency of behaviors demonstrates the existence of an “eco-gender gap”. According to the OECD report on Gender and Sustainable Development, women tend to have a smaller ecological footprint than men by adopting more sustainable consumption patterns. They are more likely to recycle, buy organic food and eco-labeled products, and value more energy-efficient means of transport. They make more ethical purchasing choices, paying more attention to aspects such as child labor, and are more inclined to choose products with labels such as Fairtrade. Instead, men, whether wealthy or poor, tend to be more resource-intensive, have a larger overall carbon footprint (Raty and Carlsson-Kanyama 2010), and feel less guilty about a non-ecological lifestyle (Tiller 2014). Another study answers the question: “Does gender really matter for sustainability?” (Meinzen-Dick, Kovarik, R. Quisumbing 2014*): yes, but according to the analysis conducted it does not mean that women (or men) are intrinsically more resource-conscious. Rather, we should take into account the intangible motives, material conditions and means available generally to one or the other gender. Plastic Freedom and Package Free Shop, two well-known US zero-waste retailers, claim to be careful about using gender-neutral marketing, but both say around 90% of their customers are female (source The Guardian) . In Italy, we asked WHATaECO, e-commerce of sustainable products: “85% of our buyers are women“. The clients of the Stoviglioteca in Milan are also mainly women. “98%“, Nadia tells us, leading this service that allows you to rent washable and reusable tableware kits for your parties. Why this gap? The differentiation of roles in the domestic reality can have an impact. Many women still tend to take charge of housekeeping, with tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and even recycling. According to the OECD, women are more often responsible for activities such as shopping, preparing meals, buying gifts and disposing of garbage. Regarding the consumption pattern, women spend more on consumer products (in particular, hygiene, body care, health, clothing and shoes, books and culture). Men eat out more frequently, buy more alcohol and tobacco, spend more on transportation and sport. In the past, the gap has been attributed to differences in personality traits. A series of studies from the mid-1990s to early 2000s indicated a greater tendency for women to: – be prosocial, selfless and empathetic – show a stronger ethics of attention – take a future-oriented perspective. “Research suggests that women have higher levels of socialisation to care about others and be socially responsible, which then leads them to care about environmental problems and be willing to adopt environmental behaviours,” says Rachel Howell, professor of sustainable development. at the University of Edinburgh (source The Guardian). According to the aforementioned study (Meinzen-Dick, Kovarik, R. Quisumbing 2014*), it is not inherent characteristics of the gender that cause the gap. Rather, other elements such as motivation, decision-making power and financial situation must be taken into account. Preferences for sustainability are malleable, influenced by material conditions and awareness campaigns. Gender roles and resource dependence for livelihoods are particularly salient in shaping both knowledge of resources and preferences for their conservation. The constraints on adopting more sustainable practices may differ for men and women, this can explain the gap could be. Whatever the motivations and decision-making power that men or women have, without the knowledge, work and financial resources necessary to adopt practices that limit or increase the use of resources, sustainability will not be achieved. However, the question may arise that the perception of more sustainable practices as a threat to masculinity also plays its part. It’s a study conducted by Penn State researchers that sheds light on how men may be unwilling to carry a reusable shopping bag, recycle, or engage in other environmentally friendly activities that are considered feminine. “There may be subtle, gender-related consequences when we engage in various pro-environmental behaviors. People may avoid certain behaviors because they are managing the gendered impression they anticipate others will have of them. Or they may be avoided if the behaviors they choose do not match their gender”. To preserve gender identity, men would avoid ecological behaviors linked to the green-feminine stereotype. Just as it seems to happen in the mechanisms of reluctance on the part of men to adopt vegetarian and vegan diets. Swim thinks it’s important to understand these social consequences, because they can prevent people from engaging in behaviors that could ultimately help the environment (source Science Daily 2019). The green-feminine stereotype The prevailing association between the concepts of green and femininity, and the corresponding stereotype (on the part of both men and women), according to which green consumers are female, could therefore contribute to the gender eco gap. Survey data collected by OgilvyEarth suggests that “going green” is considered more feminine than masculine by most American adults (Bennett and Williams 2011). Environmentalism and conservationism reflect attention and care for the environment, which are typical female traits (Gilligan 1982; Tavris 1999; Watson 1994). According to the Penn State researchers, environmentalism in general can be viewed as feminine because it fits the traditional role of women as care givers. Furthermore, the green-feminine association could simply be the result of the examples that come to mind when thinking of people who typically adopt green behaviors. If the association is strong enough, it can influence social judgments and self-perception. Men and women can judge those who engage in ecological behaviors as more feminine than those who do not, and to the extent that such a stereotype is internalized, men and women who engage in ecological behaviors can experience a heightened sense of femininity. An experimental study highlights the implicit cognitive association between the concepts of green and femininity, and shows that this association can influence both social judgments and self-perception, between men and women. The analysis suggests that, as a result of maintaining gender identity, gender signals (e.g., those that threaten or affirm a consumer’s gender identity or that influence a brand’s gender associations) are more probability of influencing men’s preferences (compared to women) for ecological products and the willingness to adopt green behaviors. Consumers who feel motivated to take actions that serve to reinforce gender identity as a central aspect of their self-concept should be more influenced by the green-feminine stereotype (Brough, Wilkie, Ma, Isaac & Gal 2016**). More inclusive marketing? The association risks being strengthened by advertising, with eco-friendly campaigns and messages largely aimed at female audiences. Many environmental messages use more feminine fonts and colors. Additionally, many green marketing activities involve areas where women tend to be more involved than men, such as cleaning, food preparation, family health, laundry, and home maintenance. According to some, if the gap exists and it makes sense to talk about gender differentiation these days, marketers should consider masculine branding strategies of a stereotypically feminine product category. As is the case with diet sodas that are offered to male audiences with slogans such as “Pepsi Max — the first cola diet for men” (Brough, Wilkie, Ma, Isaac & Gal 2016**). Or like vegan stylist and activist Joshua Katcher, who founded his sustainable menswear line, Brave GentleMan, in 2008. Seeing masculinity that hinders sustainability as a cultural crisis, Katcher proposes to make being green more attractive and rewarding for men in an intelligent way, that is, without harming people with the archetype of the traditional man (source Euronews). “What I’ve been trying to do with Discerning Brute (Katcher’s blog) is to tap into our ideas of heroic power, of protective power. I think there is a way to attract those types of men who want that feeling of being physically able to do something meaningful to protect.” In the article published in the journal Sex Roles, Penn State researchers stress the importance of continuing to study gender stereotypes surrounding environmentalism and its associated behaviors. They added that activists and policymakers who are trying to promote pro-environmental behavior may want to consider these pressures to conform to gender roles as possible barriers. The future The latest generations grow up with greater exposure to environmental and social issues. Diversity, inclusion, gender fluidity are more familiar concepts than previous generations. With less force than the traditional concept of masculinity, younger people may therefore feel less threatened by perceived attacks on gender identity. Sustainability awareness campaigns should be aimed at everyone, removing the underlying aura of “female” exclusivity. It is certainly a broader cultural and social change, linked to the dismantling of traditional stereotypes, for which the road seems to be only at the beginning. In the meantime, we can contribute by making our messages more inclusive, taking the gender of our audience less for granted, considering the spread of fluid gender so that little by little these analyzes could make less and less sense and the green-female stereotype slowly weakening. *Ruth Meinzen-Dick, Chiara Kovarik, and Agnes R.

A series of studies from the mid-1990s to early 2000s indicated a greater tendency for women to:
– be prosocial, selfless and empathetic
– show a stronger ethics of attention
– take a future-oriented perspective.

The green-feminine stereotype

The prevailing association between the concepts of green and femininity, and the corresponding stereotype (on the part of both men and women), according to which green consumers are female, could therefore contribute to the gender eco gap.

I think there is a way to attract those types of men who want that feeling of being physically able to do something meaningful to protect.”

In the article published in the journal Sex Roles, Penn State researchers stress the importance of continuing to study gender stereotypes surrounding environmentalism and its associated behaviors. They added that activists and policymakers who are trying to promote pro-environmental behavior may want to consider these pressures to conform to gender roles as possible barriers.

The future

The latest generations grow up with greater exposure to environmental and social issues.

Stand.Earth has recently published a research on the link between the fashion industry and the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Using public and government data, the survey shows how the supply of leather from fashion brands represents an existential climate risk for the world, the Amazon rainforest and indigenous communities. The cattle industry is linked to the availability of forests. A World Resources Institute’s study found that from 2001 to 2015 cattle was responsible for 36% of global tree cover loss. Cattle replaced nearly double the forest area of all other assets combined (soy, palm oil, rubber, coconut, coffee, wood fiber). By analyzing the tracking of leather exported by the largest Brazilian meat leather company, JBS, Stand.Earth has identified the brands complicit in the annihilation of the lung of the earth. In fact, all the realities that source directly or indirectly from JBS are connected to the collapse of the Amazon rainforest. The problem does not only concern JBS, but the entire Brazilian leather industry. The study analyzed all 6 major exporters, investigating 500,000 rows of customs data obtained from multiple data providers and cross-referenced with data collected from other sources to uncover the hidden supply chain. Brazilian leather is used by tanneries and manufacturers around the world to make countless consumer-facing branded products, including high-end footwear and fashion products. Italy is significantly involved: about a third of exports are in fact destined for our country. At the time of publication, the research highlights over 100 brands that are at high risk of leading to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. These brands include: Adidas, Nike, Coach, Prada, Zara, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, New Balance, UGG, and Fendi, all of which have more connections with deforestation in the Amazon. The study revealed: Brands with multiple connections to deforestation (=high risk), among which: Adidas Fila Camper Nike Timberland Geox Puma ASICS Clarks Dr. Martens Tommy Hilfiger Calvin Klein Vans New Balance Zara H&M Guess Ralph Lauren Lacoste Prada LVMH Michael Kors DKNY Brand with a single connection, among which: Decathlon Giorgio Armani Bally Esprit Maison Margiela By connections we mean the individual links in the supply chain between various companies (leather tanneries in Brazil, leather processorsin various countries, shoe/fashion manufacturers and brands around the world). An interactive site shows the links of all brands, parent companies and the supply chain. The data analyzed also illustrates that a third of the companies included in the survey are violating their policies, while two thirds of the companies have no policies in place. Some fashion brands are hiding behind LWG (Leather Working Group), which on the one hand is collaborating with the University of Wisconsin and two NGOs (NWF and WWF) to increase the transparency of the supply chain, on the other, however, fails to address deforestation due to the lack of tracking systems and availability of data on the value chain of cattle in Brazil. LWG certification does not guarantee that the leather is free from responsibility in deforestation. Brands often hide behind the claim that their supply chains are free from illegal deforestation, but a 2020 study found that nearly all deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is illegal. Slow Factory proposes an environmental campaign to ask for responsibility from brands and hold them legally responsible through legislation. “The fashion industry is known for deliberately obscure supply chains that hide massive human rights and environmental abuses,” explains Colin Vernon, co-founder of Slow Factory. “iven the very lax standards and enforcement on the part of the Brazilian government, we are calling on global brands to make sure that they can prove that their supply chains are clean, without relying on the word of their suppliers, or standards that have massive loopholes. The truth is, the Amazon is being burned down to raise cattle for meat and leather, and brands have the power to stop it“. Is leather a by-product? The recurring question when it comes to leather and sustainability is: “Isn’t leather a positive use of a cattle byproduct that would otherwise go to waste?”. Slow Factory confirms that this is not the case. “Given how much export revenue Brazil generates from leather production, cowhides are considered a co-product, rather than a byproduct, of beef. While the vast majority of Brazil’s beef is consumed domestically, most of its leather makes its way into shoes, handbags, belts, and other items used daily by consumers around the world“. If you want to read more about the leather industry, we have also talked about it here>

By connections we mean the individual links in the supply chain between various companies (leather tanneries in Brazil, leather processorsin various countries, shoe/fashion manufacturers and brands around the world).

Between floods, fires, droughts, hurricanes, pollution, melting glaciers, rising sea levels… Is there anyone, sensitive to the topic of sustainability, who doesn’t feel a bit of eco-anxiety? Especially following the publication of the latest IPCC report this summer, posts, comments and requests for advice more and more frequently have expressed the concern for the future scenario that lies ahead in terms of the survival of mankind. Le evidenze lo confermano (fonte IPCC 2021): Formed in 1988, it is the United Nations body made up of climate experts. In the latest published report, 234 scientists synthesized 14,000 research papers. There are no more doubts about the climate crisis. It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, the ocean and the emerged lands. Evidence confirms it, in fact (source IPCC 2021): Human influence has been the leading cause of global glacier retreat since the 1990s and has contributed to the observed surface melting of the Greenland ice sheet over the past two decades. Human influence has warmed the climate at an unprecedented rate (speed) in the past 2000 years. Extremes of heat (including heat waves) have become more frequent and more intense in most of the lands that have emerged since the 1950s. Global surface temperature has risen faster since 1970 than at any other 50-year period in the past 2,000 years. The global mean sea level will continue to increase over the course of the 21st century (the expectations are between +0.28 and +1.01 meters). The ocean has warmed faster in the last century than since the end of the last deglaciation (about 11,000 years ago). In 2019, atmospheric CO2 concentrations were the highest in the last 2 million years. Global warming of 1.5° C and 2 C will be overcome during the course of the 21st century unless there are major reductions in CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades. These are just some of the points that emerged from the report: did you feel eco-anxiety? What is it? It is an indirect psychological impact of climate change. It is “a large-scale reaction to the state of planetary ecosystems” (Pihkala, 2020). According to the American Pshychological Association (2017) it is “a chronic fear of environmental doom. A source of stress caused by looking at the slow and seemingly irrevocable impact of climate change, and worrying about the future of oneself, children and the last generations” (Clayton et. Al., 2017). How does it manifest? Symptoms reported are existential fear, guilt or shame about one’s environmental footprint, depression, anxiety, panic, nervousness, feeling hopeless, irritability, weakness, mood swings, exhaustion, insomnia, obsessive thoughts. Who is affected? It affects everyone, even young people and children. The American Psychological Association (2020) found that for 47% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34, the stress of climate change had an impact on daily life. Young people through modern technology experience greater exposure to disturbing and anxious climatic realities (Li, 2015). The charity Place2Be states that it is more pronounced among young people: a study shows that 4 out of 5 children between 10 and 12 years have expressed feelings of fear, sadness, anger for environmental problems. How we react to the climate anxiety? Psychological responses can be (Coppola, 2021): disadaptive. For many people, the mental cost of thinking and experiencing the reality of a changing climate is almost too much to bear. Consequently, a common response is to reject this reality. A disadaptive response is characterized by shutdown through denial, splitting, and disavowal (Doherty, 2011; Lewis, 2019). adaptive. Other people cultivate various self-preservation effects such as resilience, constructive hope, attunement, cognitive resonance, and self-efficacy. Pihkala (2019) states that one needs to be able to adapt in the face of anxiety rather than being crushed. How can we respond adaptively? We have collected some tips for reacting to eco-anxiety in a more constructive and resilient way. In cases of high levels or pathological situations, the support of a specialist is obviously necessary, in other cases we can take some actions. 10 solutions Improve your mood Connect with nature. Grow plants and trees on the terrace, balcony, garden. Meditate Disconnect from the internet. Taking care of yourself through healthy habits is recommended by the American Psychological Association. Get better informed Choose your sources of information carefully. Avoid those who talk with disastrous tones, without proposing actions that can be put into practice. Always check what you read! The media often chase sensational headlines. Cut down on time in the midst of negative news. It’s important to be up to date, but don’t overdo it. Zero Waste Goods gives us some very valid advice: if you read a negative story, write a message to “take home” and a change that you want to implement as a response to what you read. Look for positive stories to bring into your perspective that there are so many positive things happening in the world. Action as antidote (Coppola 2021) Evaluate your environmental impact and observe how you can improve it by changing some habits (decrease plastic, reduce waste, buy locally, adopt a plant-based diet, etc.). You can follow the advice on our site, for example, to limit your impact through the choice of clothes. Or use an app like AWorld. Find your role, think about the best way you can use your skills to contribute positively. We can’t do EVERYTHING, but we can do something. Also through our political and purchasing choices. The strenght of the group Join other groups, for example volunteering. Ecoanxiety is often experienced in solitude. A thesis research conducted at the University of Vermont (Coppola, 2021) revealed how action through involvement in environmental organizations serves as an antidote to ecoanxiety among members of the “Climate Generation” (young people between 18 and 21 years old were interviewed, recruited by six UVM environmental organizations). Choose a reality that works near you to contribute positively to the local community. Share your experience with others and build strong social networks (American Psychological Association). On Clubhouse we meet weekly to network, discuss and support each other among people who care about sustainability (Sustainability Club). Try to be an example to others (remembering that you don’t have to be perfect!). Photos: Omid Armin (cover); Fransiskus Filibert; Dress ECOde.

Action as antidote (Coppola 2021)

Evaluate your environmental impact and observe how you can improve it by changing some habits (decrease plastic, reduce waste, buy locally, adopt a plant-based diet, etc.). You can follow the advice on our site, for example, to limit your impact through the choice of clothes. Or use an app like AWorld.

Find your role, think about the best way you can use your skills to contribute positively. We can’t do EVERYTHING, but we can do something. Also through our political and purchasing choices.

The strenght of the group

Join other groups, for example volunteering.

Within the club Sostenibilità in Clubhouse, we interviewed Serena Giacomin, meteorologist, climatologist and President of the Italian Climate Network. Thanks to Carlotta Redaelli, we asked Serena some questions about the information available regarding weather and climate change, to understand what the hoaxes are circulating on the subject. Like the fake news in which the Nobel Prize winner Rubbia also fell! The conversation also led us to touch on other topics such as the difference between meteorology and climatology, denial, the best ways to talk about climate change, in addition to the book “Penguins at the equator” written by Serena with Luca Perri and the projects carried out in the schools. We thank Serena for her availability and the interesting conversation. Climate change is a difficult subject to understand without adequate scientific preparation. It is perceived badly, perceived as distant in time and space, connected to the concept of renunciation, leading some to deny. Serena instead guides us to observe it from another perspective, pleasant, ironic, lighter, clearer and in terms of advantage, comfort and improvement of our life. Enjoy listening!
Così iniziò a tenerne traccia. Registrazioni: https://www.soundtracker.comFilm: http://www.soundtrackerthemovie.com/ST/Home.htmlLibro: https://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Gordon-Hempton/45345383 English – The environmental impact of human noise: silence will no longer exist in 10 years. Listen to the man who is saving the voice of nature! There is not much talk about the impact of noise. When was the last time you experienced absolute silence capturing only the sounds of nature?Without hearing cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks, mopeds, airplanes, trains, trams, lawn mowers, leaf vacuums, horns, machinery at work. Moments of silence seem increasingly rare. During the Covid-19 lockdown, we noticed the absence of the daily noises of the city, to rediscover, for example, the birds singing. Did you notice it? When I end up near a source of water, I like to record the sound of waves or the sound of a waterfall as a voice memo. If the rain falls, I strain my ears to catch the sound of the drops on the leaves of the trees. In a shelter by the sea in winter, I record the voices of the birds that chirp from morning to night, each one with his different song, to listen to it in moments of nostalgia for nature. There is a man who has done something much more extraordinary for over 35 years. Gordon Hempton is an acoustic ecologist, he records natural soundscapes all over the world, especially in less densely populated places. One day he fell asleep on the grass, during a storm and in the rain he was fascinated by the sounds of nature. So he started keeping track of it. “This was the first time I experienced true listening”.Gordon warns us that silence is extinguishing. This is why he records sounds that people forget to hear. He has traveled around the globe 3 times in these years, in search of the rarest sounds that can be fully appreciated only in the absence of artificial noise. “Earth is a solar-powered jukebox. Silence is not noiselessness. It is the complete absence of all audible mechanical vibrations, leaving only the sounds of nature at her most natural. Silence is the presence of everything, undisturbed”. His intent is to make us true listeners of the environment, to make us love nature and to protect it, giving us the opportunity to listen to the sunrise around the globe, the snow that melts, the whales that sing, the rain that falls, fluttering butterfly wings, coyote songs, crashing waterfalls, birdsong. Because we risk losing the existence of places not influenced by human activity. “In 10 years there will no longer be a single silent place if we do not act”. Gordon says that during the day, the average noiseless interval in the wild areas has decreased to less than five minutes. In his book he tells of the journey across the United States in a 1964 bus, recording sounds up to the state of Washington DC, where he meets politicians and officials to put pressure on the preservation of natural silence. Where does the noise come from? The sources can be positioned inside the rooms, such as for example appliances and air conditioners, or placed outside the building. The external sources can in turn be grouped into three main categories (fonte Arpa): – productive activities;– temporary construction and road construction sites;– means of road, rail, air transport (traffic). Gordon lost his hearing in one ear and a few years ago risked becoming completely deaf. A paradox for who is engaged in saving silence. One Square Inch of Silence is the independent research project that he carries on to defend the probably most peaceful and among the most pristine places in the United States, in the Hoh rainforest of the Olympic National Park. During the sound recording, “when I hear an artificial noise that disturbs, I identify the source, I send a letter and ask for compliance”. Losing silence also means a damage to our health. “Noise is identified by surveys as one of the most significant causes of the deterioration of the quality of life and is now recognized as one of the main environmental problems; although it is sometimes considered less relevant than other forms of pollution such as air or water pollution, the noise provokes more and more negative reactions in the exposed population” (source: arpa veneto). Too much noise can send our bodies in overdrive, continuously activating stress hormones. Repeated exposure, in addition to the direct consequences on the auditory system, can give rise to effects such as sleep and rest disturbance, interference on verbal communication and learning, psychophysiological effects, mental health and performance, not only a nuisance generally understood. Noise reduces well-being, quality of life and mental health. On the contrary, silence is healthy. Gordon said in an interview with Newsweek: “Too much silence will drive you mad in no time at all if you are talking about spending time alone in an anechoic chamber. That fact is well established. But in nature, experiencing too much natural silence will not drive you mad—in fact, it might make you sane. Recent studies have shown that nature experience can be as effective as medication in the treatment of autism, for example”. “It is our birthright to listen, quietly and undisturbed, to the natural environment and take whatever meanings we may from it. By listening to natural silence, we feel connected to the land, to our evolutionary past, and to ourselves”. Starting from this vacation, we can rediscover our right to listen to natural sounds. Start looking for places far from urban noise, paying attention to minimize the impact of our passage, especially in the most unpolluted places. Listen to the wonderful recordings of Gordon, which will make you travel the world discovering new sounds. What does silence have to do with sustainable fashion? We would like to write about everything that increases our love for nature, because it helps us to strengthen the motivation to preserve it. Even with the choice of what we wear. “Nature is music.

Così iniziò a tenerne traccia.

English – The environmental impact of human noise: silence will no longer exist in 10 years. Listen to the man who is saving the voice of nature!

There is not much talk about the impact of noise. When was the last time you experienced absolute silence capturing only the sounds of nature?
Without hearing cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks, mopeds, airplanes, trains, trams, lawn mowers, leaf vacuums, horns, machinery at work.

“This was the first time I experienced true listening”.
Gordon warns us that silence is extinguishing.
This is why he records sounds that people forget to hear. He has traveled around the globe 3 times in these years, in search of the rarest sounds that can be fully appreciated only in the absence of artificial noise.

“Earth is a solar-powered jukebox.

Will we or will we not fall back in love with planet Earth?”

English – Temperature blanket: colored threads to interpret the abstract concept of climate change A new way of spreading the concept of climate change is becoming popular: the unconventional knitting and crochet project Temperature blanket translates it into the material made of colored threads. Josie George has found a way to visualize an abstract concept such as that of climate change. By putting her knitting skills to good use, she started by creating a scarf in which each row represents the temperature and the climate in her city. A coloured thread indicates the temperature, a second line shows if a particular day has been cloudy, sunny, rainy or snowy. “I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away”. Her project published on Twitter has inspired many other people and each one interprets in a personal way the concept of the climate that changes over time. Rainbow colours are most often used, some choose only pastel colours or a more limited palette. Stitches, signs, created objects change from person to person, giving life to an individual transposition of one’s vision of climate change in the matter. Do you want to try it too? Here you will find a free printable chart that will give you an idea of the temperatures and the corresponding color combinations. Write to us and we will follow your project!

English – Temperature blanket: colored threads to interpret the abstract concept of climate change

A new way of spreading the concept of climate change is becoming popular: the unconventional knitting and crochet project Temperature blanket translates it into the material made of colored threads.

Italiano/English below Puoi ascoltare qui l’articolo: Audio-à-porter – Lancio e contest! Buon ascolto! English – Audio-à-porter is born, the podcast of audio articles on sustainable fashion. And a contest is starting: you can participate to be a protagonist! The idea was born one evening, after a pleasant dinner, starting the search for an appropriate name related to fashion and the possibility of ready-to-listen articles. Audio-à-porter is a project started more than two months ago, thinking of those who say they do not have time to read news and who wish to listen and in the meantime be informed while in the gym, walking, running, training, traveling, and on the means of transport, cooking, takes care of household chores or in moments of relaxation. We began to include in each article the possibility of listening to it instead of reading it, simply by clicking on the name of the episode in green next to the headphones symbol: At the moment about 20 episodes are uploaded, slowly we will extend to the main articles published so far (more than 150), from now on to new ones too. If you only want to listen, you can directly access the podcast channel from Spreaker, You Tube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Podcast and soon Google Podcast. The new channel is free and we would like to find a sponsor, who is on our wavelength, to be able to continue offering content without asking any listeners for any contribution. On the occasion of the launch, a dedicated contest for you! By Friday 28 February 2020, write your story about sustainable clothing: what you do to be greener and more ethical in choosing your clothes, an episode of your life related to sustainable fashion, the story of a vintage or family garment that is special for you. We will choose the most beautiful story and write an article about you, interviewing you in person with a little surprise if you have the pleasure, telling you about yourself on Audio-à-porter. Become the protagonist of the commitment to a fashion that cares more for people and the environment! Send your story to: contact_us@dressecode.it We want to bring you, in a polite way, the news on sustainable fashion and suggestions on how to dress in a greener and ethical way.
