Le giornate estive si avvicinano, tempo di maniche corte e di cotone. Si stimano però 2.500–2.700 litri di acqua necessari per produrre una maglietta, principalmente perché la coltivazione del cotone è ad alta intensità idrica, nella metà dei casi in aree in cui le precipitazioni piovane non sono sufficienti per la sua crescita. Oltre a sottrarre una preziosa risorsa agli essere umani, l’utilizzo intensivo di acqua sconvolge gli ecosistemi locali, con conseguenze sulle caratteristiche del suolo e sul mantenimento della biodiversità mettendo a rischio specie animali. Inoltre, la coltivazione di cotone è responsabile del consumo di fertilizzanti, pesticidi e insetticidi tossici, che possono rappresentare un grave rischio per la salute e l’ambiente, contaminando il suolo e le risorse idriche limitrofe alle colture. La produzione di cotone è responsabile del 18% dell’utilizzo di pesticidi nel mondo e del 25% di insetticidi (fonte delle percentuali: The True Cost). La coltivazione riguarda anche l’aspetto sociale: il salario dei lavoratori, il coinvolgimento di minori nella raccolta, le condizioni di lavoro e i rischi per la salute (per l’inalazione di sostanze tossiche). Quasi la totalità dei lavoratori nelle coltivazioni di cotone vive e lavora nei paesi in via di sviluppo, dove le tutele sono carenti. Episodi di schiavitù sono tutt’ora purtroppo presenti (qui puoi leggere di ciò che accade in Turkmenistan e Uzbekistan: Oltre un milione costretti a raccogliere cotone).

Quali alternative abbiamo? Possiamo cercare magliette prodotte con impegno nel rispetto di persone e ambiente. Produzione lenta

È una piccola start-up italiana, nata alla fine del 2016 vicino Cuneo, che propone capi di abbigliamento biologici e sostenibili. Il cotone è coltivato in India: “Abbiamo scelto fornitori certificati dal consorzio Control Union Certification”. Le magliette sono prodotte in Bangladesh in fabbriche certificate dalla fondazione Fair Wear Foundation, che si occupa di lavoro etico nel settore abbigliamento. Per garantire la sostenibilità le collezioni sono realizzate in modo lento: gli ordini vengono prodotti settimanalmente, lavorazione e consegna richiedono tra i 10 e i 15 giorni.

Kibou produce magliette a tinta unita e non solo, polo, camicie e vestiti estivi per ragazze in tessuti come cotone biologico e poliestere riciclato. Le t-shirt sono prodotte in Bangladesh da fabbriche certificate Fair Wear Foundation. Ogni 10 prodotti acquistati sul sito si impegnano a piantare un albero. English – More sustainable men’s T-shirts: 8 addresses where to find them and why choose them instead of traditional cotton ones

Summer days are approaching, time of short sleeves and cotton. However, an estimated 2,500–2,700 liters of water are needed to produce a t-shirt, mainly because the cultivation of cotton is water-intensive, in half of the cases in areas where rainfall is not sufficient for its growth. In addition to stealing a precious resource from human beings, the intensive use of water destroys local ecosystems, with consequences on the characteristics of the soil and on the maintenance of biodiversity, putting animal species at risk. Furthermore, the cultivation of cotton is responsible for the consumption of fertilizers, pesticides and toxic insecticides, which can pose a serious risk to health and the environment, contaminating the soil and water resources adjacent to the crops. Cotton production is responsible for 18% of the use of pesticides worldwide and 25% of insecticides (percentage source: The True Cost). Cultivation also concerns the social aspect: workers’ wages, the involvement of minors in the harvest, working conditions and health risks (for the inhalation of toxic substances). Almost all cotton workers live and work in developing countries, where protections are lacking. Slavery episodes are unfortunately still present (here you can read about what happens in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan: More than one million forced to pick cotton).

What alternatives do we have? We can look for t-shirts produced with commitment in respect of people and the environment. Produzione lenta

It is a small Italian start-up, born at the end of 2016 near Cuneo, offering organic and sustainable clothing. Cotton is grown in India: “We have chosen suppliers certified by the Control Union Certification consortium”. The t-shirts are produced in Bangladesh, in factories certified by the Fair Wear Foundation, which deals with ethical work in the clothing sector. To ensure sustainability, the collections are made slowly: orders are produced weekly, processing and delivery take between 10 and 15 days.

Kibou

Kibou produces solid-color T-shirts and more, polo shirts, shirts and summer dresses for girls in fabrics such as organic cotton and recycled polyester. The t-shirts are produced in Bangladesh by Fair Wear Foundation certified factories. Every 10 products purchased on the site undertake to plant a tree. It is a small Italian brand of streetwear clothing. T-shirts in many graphics and colors, sweatshirts, bags and backpacks. They choose more sustainable fabrics including organic cotton, Tencel Lyocell and recycled fabrics, with certifications both regarding the environmental and social aspects. The prints are made with ecological and biodegradable inks. The main supplier is an English company that produces in Turkey and in India, respecting ethical and sustainability standards and ensuring transparency in the supply chain. On the site they share all the information on the raw material, the press, the suppliers and each t-shirt has an identity card. “The choice of working on the ecological is strongly desired to go against the irresponsibility of the fashion industry, one of the biggest causes of pollution in the world”.

It is an Italian brand halfway between fashion and art. It relies on Italian workshops, cooperatives, communities, people, pensioners, craftsmen and friends. It uses low environmental impact materials (GOTS certified organic cotton, end of series fabrics and recycled materials) and collaborates with artists and designers. “We mix threads, sew colors, combine ideas and share them through a teeshare. A message to wear. We take a small part of the proceeds from each shirt and donate it to ADMO (Association of Bone Marrow Donors)”. Giacca realizzato al 100% da bottiglie di plastica riciclate. Abbiamo scelto questa ma Ecoalf, brand spagnolo, propone diversi modelli, più sotto il link per visionarli. Ci piace il loro impegno in progetti di pulizia del mare dalla plastica, recuperando rifiuti nel Mediterraneo con la collaborazione dei pescatori.
“Cerchiamo una nuova generazione di consumatori con una consapevolezza in aumento e allo stesso tempo fedeli ai loro valori estetici. Creiamo oggetti che rendono al vostra vita più divertente senza danneggiare ulteriormente la nostra relazione con l’ambiente. Save the duck
È uno dei miei marchi preferiti. La giacca che proponiamo è in 100% poliestere riciclato, con 30% di componente PET a base vegetale , creato attraverso la polimerizzazione e la filatura a fusione di glicole etilenico derivato dalle piante, estratto dalla melassa di canna da zucchero. È reversibile, quindi sarà come avere due giacche: abbiamo scelto questa in verde oliva da un lato e verde scuro dall’altro. È ripiegabile nella sua borsa per il trasporto (vi assicuro che risulta molto comodo quando si viaggia da un posto caldo a uno freddo o viceversa).
La gamma proposta è ampia, ma verificate di scegliere la linea in materiale riciclato, ottenuto dalle bottiglie di plastica.

Questa giacca è realizzata in poliestere recuperato e riciclato, i cordini e il logo sono di sughero. È trattata con un rivestimento idrorepellente.
Per ogni indumento acquistato saranno piantati 10 alberi. Tentree vuole diventare il brand “più ecologicamente progressista del pianeta”. La scelta è davvero ampia. Di Patagonia abbiamo scelto questa giacca anti pioggia classica, minimalista. L’esterno è realizzato in nylon 100% riciclato ed è traspirante. Può essere ripiegata nella tasca scaldamani. È disponibile in più colori.
Parliamo spesso di questo marchio, per l’impegno verso l’ambiente e per le iniziative che propongono al fine di cambiare l’atteggiamento consumistico nel mondo (organizzano workshop di riparazione dei loro capi e di vendita del loro usato, promuovono campagne di acquisto più consapevole, creano incontri con tematiche relative alla natura).

Jacket made of 100% recycled plastic bottles. We chose this but Ecoalf, a Spanish brand, offers different models, below the link to view them. We like their commitment to projects of cleaning the sea from plastics, by recovering waste in the Mediterranean with the help of fishermen.

Save the duck
It’s one of my favorite brands. The jacket we present is made of 100% recycled polyester, with 30% of plant-based PET component, created through the polymerization and fusion spinning of ethylene glycol derived from plants, extracted from sugar cane molasses. It is reversible, so it will be like having two jackets: we have choosen this one in olive green on one side and dark green on the other. It can be folded into its carrying bag (I can assure you that it is very convenient when traveling from a warm place to a cold one or vice versa).
The range proposed is wide, but verify to choose the line in recycled material, obtained from plastic bottles.

Another Italian brand, from which we have selected this stretch jacket, with maximum comfort and offering protection from rain, snow, cold and wind. Completely produced in Italy, it is made of 100% recycled material.

This jacket is made of recovered and recycled polyester, the cords and the logo are made of cork. It is treated with a water-repellent coating.
For each purchased garment 10 trees will be planted. Tentree wants to become the “most ecologically progressive planet” brand. They are not only intended to reduce the impact of the garment industry, but also to inspire a generation to believe that it is possible to revitalize the environment. “Our goal is to plant 1 billion trees by 2030”.

The choice is really wide. From Patagonia we have chosen this classic, minimalist rain jacket. The exterior is made of 100% recycled nylon and is breathable. It can be folded into the hand pocket. It is available in multiple colors.
We often talk about this brand, for the commitment to the environment and for the initiatives they propose in order to change the consumerist attitude in the world (they organize workshops to repair their garments and sell their used ones, they promote campaigns on more conscious purchasing, they create meetings with issues related to nature).
Their mission? “Making the best product, not causing unnecessary damage, using the business to inspire and implement solutions for the environmental crisis”. “For us in Patagonia, the love of the wonderful and unspoiled places of our planet translates into an active participation in the struggle for their protection and to try to reverse the precipitous decline in the health of the environment on a global level.
