Cos’è Best Vintage Mrkt Italy?

“Best Vintage Mrkt Italy (che mi piace abbreviare con BVM) è principalmente un ponte che comunica col passato; permette alle persone di scoprire la storia, le curiosità e il valore monetario di un pezzo vintage che si è trovato (o ritrovato) a casa propria o dei nonni. BVM non è il classico mercatino vintage, ma è una bacheca di pezzi vintage italiani che vive ed è alimentata dai suoi follower. Sono proprio loro che danno vita alla pagina: attraverso dei passaggi molto semplici, ognuno di loro può ricevere una recensione gratuita sul pezzo vintage, aiutandoli così nell’acquisto (per chi ad esempio cerca per passione o per collezionismo quel pezzo), nella vendita o semplicemente a capire se quello che si ha tra le mani è qualcosa di valore e autentico da esporre in casa propria (per far bella figura con amici e parenti)”.

Perché è nato BVM?

“BVM (ed è vero) nasce per caso, dall’obbligo della quarantena per il Coronavirus. Lo stare in casa mi ha fatto scoprire tanti pezzi vintage a casa dei miei genitori che non avevo mai visto e su cui non avevo mai posto l’attenzione. Quando ritrovo un pezzo appartenuto a mio nonno o a mio padre (o ancora meglio tramandato) mi emoziono e mi emoziona ancora di più sapere che quello che ho in mano ha una storia e ha un valore (affettivo e, senza essere ipocriti, economico). La prima cosa che mi chiedo quando ritrovo qualcosa di vintage è: chissà se è autentico? Chissà a che anno risale? Oppure: che valore avrà e come faccio a scoprirlo? BVM è nato da qui, mi sono detto: ‘ma se ci fosse una pagina (o in un futuro, un app) che ti permettesse di scoprire semplicemente tramite una foto e alcune informazioni di sapere tutto questo e soprattutto gratis?!’

L’obiettivo è quello di creare una bacheca e una community del vintage virtuale italiano e (non mi vergogno a dirlo) magari un domani (pensando in grande) potrà anche espandersi in altri Paesi (magari qualcuno che vorrà condividere con me quest’avventura) e portare anche a qualcosa di fisico, ad esempio un negozio che possa essere un punto di contatto tra il ritrovatore del passato e il collezionista”.

Come hai deciso di cominciare questa avventura?

“Ho deciso di iniziare per tenere occupato il cervello nei fine settimana, dalla noia anche del solito lavoro da ufficio e perché ho sempre avuto un’anima creativa e devo dire che la quarantena e il periodo di prova psicologica che stiamo vivendo mi ha aiutato a mettermi in gioco e a provarci“.

Come funziona?

“I passaggi per ottenere una recensione del tuo pezzo vintage sono molto semplici:
1. Segui la pagina su Instagram o Facebook;
2. Invia (in direct su Instagram o in privato su Facebook) alla pagina di BVM una foto (o più) del pezzo vintage. Per Instagram chiedo solitamente a chi mi contatta di impegnarsi leggermente di più nello scatto della foto, perché comunque tengo molto all’aspetto estetico della pagina;
3. Scrivi tutte le informazioni che si hanno a disposizione e che non è possibile individuare dalla foto (modello, marca, anno, funzionante o non, ecc.). Più dettagli si danno, più precisa e affidabile potranno essere la recensione e la stima del valore;
4. Suggeriscimi un contatto di un amico che potrò taggare nella recensione;
5. Ottieni la tua recensione sulla pagine di BVM”.

Perché hai scelto il vintage? 

“Perché ho sempre visto con un altro occhio tutto ciò che non appartiene all’epoca in cui viviamo. Questo legame col passato, forse per nostalgia o gusto, mi ha sempre contraddistinto (chi mi conosce lo sa). Ho sempre trovato geniale e artistico riportare di moda ai giorni nostri qualcosa che qualcuno non ha mai visto o aveva dimenticato. E poi il vintage può essere unico e avere qualcosa di unico ti rende speciale rispetto agli altri. Figurati che un mio amico si è innamorato di un paio di occhiali da sole vintage che ho ritrovato nel cassetto di mio papà e ogni anno mi fa offerte esorbitanti per averli, ma io non cedo!

Mi piace perché ogni cosa ha una storia, perché prima di noi l’ha posseduta qualcun altro e questo ti fa anche fantasticare. Una macchina da scrivere, un registratore con dentro un vecchio nastro, un paio di occhiali da sole, una macchina fotografica, il montone di papà, una Polaroid mi danno emozione solo ad elencarteli. Ecco, mi piace il sentimento che suscita dentro di noi“.

Il pezzo vintage che ti piace di più?

“Questa non è una domanda semplice. Perché in realtà non ho mai pensato a qualcosa che mi piace più del resto proprio perché ogni cosa è bella per una motivo diverso.
Personalmente, se devo farti un elenco, in primis gli occhiali da sole, poi le macchine fotografiche vintage funzionanti (Polaroid) e poi giradischi e vinili”.

Come ti sei preparato per iniziare BVM?

“Se posso essere sincero, prima di aprire questa pagina ero un semplice amatore e appassionato. Ho sempre girato per i mercatini vintage della città alla ricerca di qualcosa di raro, particolare o anche solo per guardare. Grazie a BVM sto imparando tanto e studio anche molto. Fare una recensione richiede tempo e richiede soprattutto precisione (perché il rischio su internet di cadere in siti web truffa è veramente elevato). Per cui, quando mi arriva un pezzo faccio tante ricerche e confronti e comincio a mettere insieme i pezzi, costruendo a poco a poco tramite le fonti che trovo (un po’ come quando scrivi una tesi di laurea). Bisogna avere pazienza e poi grazie a internet oggi abbiamo tutto a portata di mano, basta saper cercare”.

Ci daresti qualche consiglio per acquistare vintage?

“Il consiglio è quello di controllare in maniera molto attenta l’usura del pezzo (qualsiasi esso sia), molte volte presi dalla foga del momento si viene attratti da qualcosa e si compra senza vedere i particolari. Le truffe soprattutto nell’abbigliamento vintage sono molto facili e la gente sa anche vendere molto bene; per cui guardate bene i particolari. Per quanto riguarda l’oggettistica, se non siete degli intenditori e magari pensate di aver trovato qualcosa di raro o di valore, chiedete sempre prima a qualcuno che ne sa più di voi o possa aiutarvi a capirne di più…oppure fate una foto e chiedete a BVM e risparmiate tempo e fatica”.

Many curiosities that are finally satisfied, thanks to Eugenio Argento, founder of Best Vintage Mrkt Italy, to whom we ask to better explain how this digital case of vintage pieces works.

What is Best Vintage Mrkt Italy?

“Best Vintage Mrkt Italy (which I like to abbreviate with BVM) is mainly a bridge that communicates with the past; it allows people to discover the history, curiosities and monetary value of a vintage piece that has been found (or found again) in one’s own home or grandparents’. BVM is not the classic vintage market, but is a showcase of Italian vintage pieces that lives and is fed by its followers. They are the ones who give life to the page: through very simple steps, each of them can receive a free review on the vintage piece, thus helping them in the purchase (for those who, for example, are looking for that piece for passion or for collecting ), in the sale or simply to understand if what you have in your hands is something of value and authentic to exhibit in your own home (to make a good impression with friends and relatives)”.

Why was BVM born?

“BVM (and it is true) was born by chance, from the quarantine obligation for Coronavirus. Staying at home made me discover many vintage pieces at my parents’ house that I had never seen and that I never paid attention to. When I find a piece that belonged to my grandfather or my father (or even better handed down) I get excited and I am even more excited to know that what I have in my hand has a history and has a value (affective and, without being hypocritical, economic). The first thing I wonder when I find something vintage is: who knows if it’s authentic? Who knows what year it dates? Or: what value will it have and how can I find it out? BVM was born from here, I said to myself: ‘what about a page (or in the future an app) that would allow you to discover simply through a photo and some information to know all this and above all for free?!’

The goal is to create a window and a community of the Italian virtual vintage and (I am not ashamed to say it) maybe tomorrow (thinking big) it will also expand to other countries (maybe someone who will want to share this adventure with me) and also lead to something physical, for example a shop that can be a point of contact between the finder of the past and the collector”.

How did you decide to start this adventure?

“I decided to keep my brain busy on the weekends, out of boredom even from the usual office work and because I have always had a creative soul and I must say that the quarantine and the psychological trial period that we are experiencing has helped me get into play and try“.

How does it work?

“The steps to get a review of your vintage piece are very simple:
1. Follow the page on Instagram or Facebook;
2. Send (in direct on Instagram or privately on Facebook) a photo (or more) of the vintage piece to the BVM page. For Instagram, I usually ask those who contact me to engage slightly more in taking the photo, because I still care a lot about the aesthetic aspect of the page;
3. Write down all the information that is available and that cannot be identified from the photo (model, brand, year, working or not, etc.). The more details you give, the more accurate and reliable the review and value estimate can be;
4. Suggest a contact of a friend that I can tag in the review;
5. Get your review on the BVM page”.

Why did you choose vintage?

“Because I have always seen with another eye everything that does not belong to the era in which we live. This link with the past, perhaps out of nostalgia or taste, has always distinguished me (who knows me knows it). I have always found it ingenious and artistic to bring something back into fashion today that someone has never seen or forgotten. And then vintage can be unique and having something unique makes you special compared to others. Imagine that a friend of mine (whose name I don’t name) fell in love with a pair of vintage sunglasses that I found in my dad’s drawer and every year he makes me exorbitant offers to have them, but I don’t give up!

I like it because everything has a story, because someone else owned it before us and this also makes you fantasize. A typewriter, a tape recorder with an old tape inside, a pair of sunglasses, a camera, dad’s sheepskin jacket, a Polaroid camera give me thrill just to list them. Here, I like the feeling that arouses within us“.

The vintage piece you like best?

“This is not a simple question. Because in reality I never thought of something that I like more than the rest precisely because everything is beautiful for a different reason.
Personally, if I have to make you a list, first of all the sunglasses, then the working vintage cameras (Polaroid) and then record players and vinyls”.

How did you prepare to start BVM?

“If I can be honest, before I opened this page I was a simple amateur and passionate. I have always wandered around the vintage markets of the city in search of something rare, particular or just to watch. Thanks to BVM I am learning a lot and I also study a lot. Making a review takes time and above all requires precision (because the risk on the internet of falling into scam websites is really high). So when I receive an item I do a lot of research and comparisons and I start putting the pieces together, building gradually through the sources I find (a bit like when you write a thesis). You have to be patient and then thanks to the internet today we have everything at our fingertips, you just need to know how to search”.

Would you give us some advice to buy vintage?

“The advice is to check very carefully the wear of the piece (whatever it is), many times taken by the excitement of the moment you are attracted to something and buy it without seeing the details. Scams especially in vintage clothing are very easy and people can also sell very well; so look carefully at the details. As for objects, if you are not an expert and maybe you think you have found something rare or valuable, always ask someone who knows more than you or who can help you understand more… or take a picture and ask BVM and save time and effort ”.

La sostenibilità del nostro stile di vita è una caratteristica che ha diversa intensità per ognuno di noi. Con l’intento di avvicinare alcuni amici al mondo dell’abbigliamento più sostenibile e per mostrare come sia divertente e possibile evitare lo shopping di fast fashion, nasce l’idea di creare una sfida di acquisti di moda in un posto con slow fashion. Coinvolgo Beatrice, Sara ed Eugenio un sabato mattina. Seguendo il suggerimento di Eugenio ci troviamo al Wunder Mkt, da Base a Milano. È un mercato di abbigliamento, accessori, oggetti di design e altro, con proposte di artigianato, vintage e second-hand. 

Abbiamo realizzato un video per poter mostrare com’è il Wunder Mkt e per raccontare com’è andata la sfida dei tre amici. Alla ricerca degli outfit si è intrecciata la scoperta delle storie di chi nel mercato lavora, è uno degli aspetti che più ci piace della slow fashion: lenta nella produzione, lenta nell’acquisto, soffermandoci ad ascoltare i racconti di chi ha creato ciò che compriamo, come e perché lo ha realizzato, nel caso del vintage e dell’usato perché lo ha scelto, da dove viene. Ci siamo divertiti e… nel video puoi scoprire chi ha vinto la sfida!

Un mercato di indumenti artigianali e usati è una modalità di iniziare un cammino di consumo più consapevole, insieme a tante altre possibili strade di cui vi parliamo in questo video. La sostenibilità é un sentiero che percorriamo con impegno, ognuno secondo quanto riesce a fare e negli aspetti che sente come prioritari. È uno stile di vita, un modo di vedere il nostro ruolo nel mondo, di pensare alle conseguenze delle nostre azioni quotidiane.

Nel video vediamo lana e viscosa, possiamo puntare il dito su un aspetto o su un altro. Ricordiamoci però che stiamo camminando tutti su quel sentiero con velocità diverse, cercando di trovare un compromesso tra le difficoltà e a volte i costi (in termini di tempo e di risorse economiche) da una parte, il desiderio di ridurre il proprio impatto ambientale e sociale dall’altra. C’è chi balza in avanti e chi procede a piccoli passi. Ci impegniamo a spiegare e divulgare in merito alla sostenibilità dei diversi tessuti e processi produttivi. Ma rispettiamo chiunque avanzi.

English – A handmade and second-hand market: we involve 3 friends in a more sustainable fashion challenge!

The sustainability of our lifestyle is a characteristic that has different intensity for each of us. There are those who have not yet started, those who have considered the impact of their daily actions for a long time, those who have stopped because they cannot do more than that. This applies to both consumers, designers and companies. We think it is increasingly useful to respect everyone’s level of sustainability, instead of judging and criticizing. Respect, understanding and support can lead to improvements more likely that with offenses and bright tones. After all, this is also part of a more ethical way of life.

With the intention of bringing some friends closer to the world of more sustainable clothing and to show how fun and possible it is to avoid fast fashion shopping, the idea was born to create a challenge of clothing purchases in a slow fashion place. I involve Beatrice, Sara and Eugenio on a Saturday morning. Following Eugenio’s suggestion, we met at the Wunder Mkt, at Base in Milan. It is a market for clothing, accessories, design objects and more, with proposals for handmade, vintage and second-hand goods.

We made a video to show how the Wunder Mkt is and to tell how the challenge of the three friends went. In search of the outfits, the discovery of the stories of those who work in the market intertwined, this is one of the aspects we like most about slow fashion: unhurried in production, unhurried in purchasing, pausing to listen to the stories of those who created what we buy, how and why they made it, in the case of vintage and second hand why they chose it, where an item comes from. We had fun and… in the video you can find out who won the challenge!

A market for handcrafted and used clothing is a way to start a more conscious consumer journey, along with many other possible ways that we talk about in this video. Sustainability is a path that we follow with commitment, each according to what he manages to do and in the aspects he feels as priorities. It is a lifestyle, a way of seeing our role in the world, of thinking about the consequences of our daily actions.

In the video we see wool and viscose, we can point the finger at one aspect or another. But remember that we are all walking on that path with different speeds, trying to find a compromise between the difficulties and sometimes the costs (in terms of time and economic resources) on the one hand, the desire to reduce their environmental and social impact on the other. There are those who jump forward and those who proceed in small steps. We are committed to explaining and spreading about the sustainability of the different fabrics and production processes. But we respect anyone who advances.

A Bollate, comodissimo se arrivate con il treno da Milano, c’è un negozio consigliato a chi ama il vintage. Con Sara Freddo, un’amica che mi fa conoscere questo posto, ci divertiamo moltissimo a provare abiti di ogni epoca e ad ascoltare Concetto Serranò, il proprietario, che ci parla della sua attività.
“È nato come negozio second-hand, ma la mia passione è sempre stato il vintage. Così quando qualche anno fa si è liberato lo spazio affianco e ho avuto il posto necessario, ho potuto realizzare l’abbinamento con il vintage. Piano piano sono arrivate anche le fiere, i mercatini come East Market e altri eventi per raggiungere il più possibile gli amanti del vintage”.

Di solito capi, accessori e altri oggetti (per uomo e donna) sono portati qui in negozio dai clienti oppure andate alla ricerca?
“Abbiamo migliaia di tesserati che ci portano varie cose in conto vendita. Inoltre la ricerca è continua, è la parte più bella, più stimolante di questo mestiere. Vivo di ricerca. Di pezzi vintage e particolari. On line, girando, ricevo proposte giornalmente. Quando si trova il pezzo, quello bello, è festa! Ed è quasi un dispiacere poi venderlo. Alcune volte torno a casa, con l’aria sconsolata dico a mia moglie che ho venduto il tal oggetto e lei mi chiede: ‘Ma non sei contento?’. No, perché ora non lo rivedo più! Come quando ho venduto una parte del mio archivio ‘sacro’ a un’amica di New York: una grande soddisfazione, ma… C’era anche una speciale gonna di Krizia, solo due esemplari nel mondo. E poi abiti in metallo, conchiglie, tanti pezzi unici”.

E questa?
“È una scultura fatta da Gina Lollobrigida! Sì, c’è un po’ di tutto. Anche i patch anni ’80-’90”.

Un’area del negozio è destinata alle pellicce, vintage e second-hand, che sono recuperate e tinte in modo da renderle moderne e ancora utilizzabili, invece di essere gettate o dimenticate.

Sul sito Concetto racconta dell’idea del negozio: “Nel tuo armadio ci sono abiti che non utilizzi più, magari indossati una sola volta e pagati a caro prezzo. Lo stesso abito potrebbe interessare ad un’altra persona, non disposta a spendere cifre esorbitanti per comprare l’equivalente del nuovo. Da questo nasce l’idea del mio negozio, un luogo accogliente, circondato da opere d’arte, dove incontrarsi, confrontarsi e scambiarsi abiti, borse, collane, bracciali, accessori, ecc.”.

Troverete veramente di tutto (solo le scarpe sono nuove). Gli abiti da cerimonia o per una serata di gala vi lasceranno senza parole. Ogni cosa qui è praticamente nuova, anche se vintage! La selezione è davvero molto accurata.

English – Cocò vintage and second-hand: the love for the search for quality items and garments that continue to be used

In Bollate, very easy if you arrive by train from Milan, there is a shop recommended for those who love vintage. With Sara Freddo, a friend who introduces me to this place, we have a great time trying out clothes from every age and listening to Concetto Serranò, the owner, who talks about his business.
“It was born as a second-hand shop, but my passion has always been vintage. So when a few years ago the space next to me was free and I had the necessary place, I was able to combine it with vintage. Little by little also the fairs, the markets like East Market and other events have arrived to reach vintage lovers as much as possible”.

Are garments, accessories and other items usually brought to the store by clients or are you looking for them?
“We have thousands of registered members who bring us various things on consignment. Furthermore, the research is continuous, it is the most beautiful, the most stimulating part of this profession. I live of research of vintage and particular pieces. On line, going around, I receive proposals daily. When the piece is found, the beautiful one, is a party! And it is almost a sorrow then to sell it. Sometimes I come home, with a disconsolate air I tell my wife that I sold a particular item and she asks me: ‘But not are you happy?’. No, because now I don’t see it again! Like when I sold a part of my ‘sacred’ archive’ to a friend in New York: great satisfaction, but … There was also a special skirt by Krizia, only two pieces in the world. And then metal dresses, shells, many unique pieces”.

And this one?
“It is a sculpture made by Gina Lollobrigida! Yes, there is a bit of everything. Even the patches of the 80s and 90s”.

An area of ​​the store is for furs, vintage and second-hand, which are recovered and dyed to make them modern and still usable, instead of being thrown away or forgotten.

On the website Concetto tells about the idea of ​​the store: “In your closet there are clothes you no longer use, maybe worn only once and paid dearly. The same dress could be of interest of another person, not willing to spend exorbitant figures to buy the equivalent of the new one. From this comes the idea of ​​my shop, a welcoming place, surrounded by works of art, where to meet, confront and exchange clothes, bags, necklaces, bracelets, accessories, etc.”.

You will really find everything (only the shoes are new). Ceremonial or gala evening dresses will leave you speechless. The selection is really very accurate and everything here is practically new, even if vintage!

Incontriamo la fondatrice di Vintag, Francesca Tonelli, per saperne di più di questa interessante applicazione tutta italiana (la società è stata creata nel 2016 a Bologna da 9 soci). 

Perché hai deciso di creare Vintag?
Vintag è nata dalla mia passione per il vintage e dall’idea che oggi come oggi non si possano disperdere le eccellenze del nostro passato.
Nel 2013 durante un trasloco, ho trovato un vecchio baule della mia nonna in cui aveva raccolto i suoi vestiti più belli, insieme a scarpe, fotografie e accessori.
Ho iniziato a studiare e appassionarmi alla storia che questi oggetti portavano con sè, a cercare più informazioni su alcuni vestiti che avevo trovato e provavo a contestualizzare il tutto.
Durante le mie ricerche facevo tantissima fatica a trovare le notizie che mi interessavano perché il vintage spesso veniva (e viene tuttora) confuso con il second-hand. Parlando con altre persone appassionate come me ho perciò capito che mancava un posto, un marketplace, una
community dedicata solo al vintage autentico. E poi c’è tutto il tema della sostenibilità: dare una seconda (terza, quarta…) vita ad un vecchio oggetto è etico perché riduce gli sprechi e l’inquinamento da nuove produzioni.

Cosa possiamo trovare nell’app?
Su Vintag si trova di tutto, purchè sia vintage (quindi che abbia almeno 20 anni) o iconico. Sicuramente le categorie più importanti sono l’abbigliamento, il design e il collezionismo, quindi passiamo dalle borse iconiche di Chanel alle lampade di design di Achille e Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.

Qualsiasi oggetto può essere venduto o c’è una verifica da parte vostra prima della pubblicazione?
Vintag è social, quindi la pubblicazione degli oggetti è immediata.
Esiste però un team tecnico che più volte al giorno controlla che gli oggetti in vendita rispettino il nostro regolamento. Se riteniamo che l’oggetto non sia vintage o iconico contattiamo il venditore spiegando cosa si può vendere su Vintag e nel caso procediamo ad eliminare il post.
Abbiamo un filo diretto con tutti gli utenti, può capitare di sbagliare quindi cerchiamo sempre di spiegare cosa si intende con vintage.
Stessa cosa anche per i fake: se abbiamo qualche dubbio su una borsa o un oggetto di lusso, contattiamo il venditore e cerchiamo di capire se si tratta di contraffazione oppure no, anche grazie alla collaborazione con il gruppo WG consulenze. In caso di fake eliminiamo immediatamente l’oggetto dalla vendita.

Quante persone utilizzano Vintag al momento? Solo in Italia o anche all’estero?
Ad oggi contiamo oltre 23mila utenti attivi, la maggior parte in Italia ma grazie al passaparola e ai social contiamo già diverse centinaia di utenti da tutto il mondo che hanno già iniziato a comprare e vendere.

Hai sempre acquistato vintage e/o usato? Se sì dove? Hai un negozio (fisico) preferito?
Fin da piccola i miei genitori scambiavano i vestiti miei e di mio fratello con i cugini. Non mi è mai piaciuto buttare le cose soprattutto se capisco che possono avere ancora qualcosa da raccontare.
Per quanto riguarda i negozi fisici, sicuramente a Bologna posso consigliare Rossi Selected Vintage nel settore luxury. Tutto il resto lo compro su Vintag o nei mercatini in giro per l’Italia.

Cosa ti piace di più del vintage?
Ci sono vari aspetti che mi piacciono. Per quanto riguarda l’abbigliamento mi piace il fatto di poter indossare qualcosa che è stato creato o indossato da qualcun altro molti anni prima, mi dà la possibilità di poter continuare a raccontare una storia e poterla reinventare. Mixare poi il nuovo con un pezzo del passato ti dà la possibilità di avere sempre look unici.
Con il vintage è anche possibile acquistare un pezzo iconico ad un prezzo sicuramente inferiore rispetto al nuovo, senza considerare il fatto che acquistando vintage non si producono nuovi oggetti e quindi zero sprechi e zero inquinamento.
Stessa cosa vale per l’arredamento: comprare un mobile antico aiuta a crea un ambiente unico sicuramente diverso rispetto a tutto ciò che ormai siamo abituati a vedere.

In occasione della giornata della terra Vintag ha lanciato un’iniziativa in cui si parla di economica circolare, ci racconti di cosa si tratta? Com’è nata questa idea?
La Giornata della Terra, celebrata il 22 aprile per promuovere la salvaguardia del nostro pianeta, è la più grande manifestazione internazionale dedicata all’ambiente con un miliardo di persone coinvolte in 192 paesi e Vintag ha deciso di unirsi a tutti i cittadini del mondo che amano e desiderano proteggere la Terra. Lo abbiamo fatto coinvolgendo i nostri utenti e un brand iconico e di grande pregio come The Bridge.

Perché hai a cuore il tema ambientale? Quando e come è iniziata questa attenzione all’ambiente?
Da sempre sono convinta che il vintage sia etico e sostenibile.
Sicuramente niente è più “green” del prolungare la durata di utilizzo e del dare una seconda possibilità a un oggetto che qualcun altro non usa più. Vintage è sinonimo di meno oggetti nuovi da produrre e dunque meno sprechi e inquinamento.

English – The sustainable passion for the old-fashioned quality and the chic reuse project with The Bridge: Francesca tells about Vintag, the app for those who love the timeless charm of the past

We wrote about Vintag, the app dedicated to shopping for objects from the past, on the occasion of the announcement of Piquadro’s entry as investor (Piquadro-investe-in-Vintag-). Buying clothing, accessories and other vintage items is a responsible solution that allows you to recover what someone is no longer using and to find quality objects, with that special charm of the past and the history that characterizes them. I remember buying a ’40s hat from a lady from Bologna, who later became a dear friend, because in the exchange of emails before buying I asked her to please tell me something about the item. In the package she sent me a handwritten letter, in which she told about who had worn it, when it was bought and where, why  she had decided to sell it… A letter full of emotions and feelings, which make the purchase even more special and valuable – something that does not happen by buying new mass-produced items in million copies!

We meet the founder of Vintag, Francesca Tonelli, to learn more about this all-Italian app (the company was created in 2016 in Bologna by 9 members).

Why did you decide to create Vintag?
Vintag was born from my passion for vintage and from the idea that nowadays we cannot disperse the excellence of our past.
In 2013 during a move, I found an old trunk of my grandmother where she had collected her most beautiful clothes, along with shoes, photographs and accessories.
I started to study and get passionate about the story that these objects brought with them, to look for more information on some clothes that I had found and I tried to contextualize the whole.
During my research I was struggling to find the news that interested me because vintage was often (and still is) confused with second-hand. Speaking with other passionate people like me I therefore realised that there was no place, a marketplace, one community dedicated only to authentic vintage. And then there is the whole theme of sustainability: giving a second (third, fourth …) life to an old object is ethical because it reduces waste and pollution from new productions.

What can we find in the app?
On Vintag you can find everything, as long as it’s vintage (so it’s at least 20 years old) or iconic. Certainly the most important categories are clothing, design and collectibles, so we move from Chanel’s iconic bags to design lamps by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.

Any object can be sold or is there a verification from you all before publication?
Vintag is social, so the publication of objects is immediate.
However, there is a technical team that checks several times a day that the items on sale respect our regulations. If we believe that the object is not vintage or iconic, we contact the seller explaining what can be sold on Vintag and if we proceed to eliminate the post.
We have a direct line to all users, it can happen to make mistakes so we always try to explain what is meant by vintage.
Same thing also for fakes: if we have any doubts about a bag or a luxury item, we contact the seller and try to understand if it is a counterfeit or not, also thanks to the collaboration with the WG consulting group. In the case of fake we immediately eliminate the object from the sale.

How many people use Vintag at the moment? Only in Italy or even abroad?
Today we have over 23 thousand active users, most of them in Italy, but thanks to word of mouth and social media we already have several hundred users from all over the world who have already started buying and selling.

Have you always bought vintage and/or second-hand? If yes where? Do you have a favorite (physical) store?
Even as a child my parents exchanged my clothes and my brother’s ones with their cousins. I’ve never liked to throw things away especially if I understand that they can still have something to tell.
As for physical stores, I can definitely recommend Rossi Selected Vintage in the luxury sector in Bologna. Everything else I buy is on Vintag or in the markets around Italy.

What do you like most about vintage?
There are various aspects that I like. As for clothing, I like the fact of being able to wear something that was created or worn by someone else many years before, giving me the possibility of being able to continue telling a story and being able to reinvent it. Then mixing the new with a piece from the past gives you the chance to always have unique looks.
With vintage it is also possible to buy an iconic piece at a price definitely lower than the new, without considering the fact that buying vintage does not produce new objects and therefore zero waste and zero pollution.
The same thing applies to furnishing: buying an antique piece of furniture helps create a unique space that is certainly different from everything we are used to seeing.

On the occasion of Earth Day, Vintag has launched an initiative that talks about circular economy, can you tell us what it is? How did this idea come about?
Earth Day, celebrated April 22 to promote the preservation of our planet, is the largest international event dedicated to the environment with a billion people involved in 192 countries and Vintag has decided to join all the citizens of the world who love and they want to protect the Earth. We did it by involving our users and an iconic brand of great value like The Bridge.
In summary, until May 31 The Bridge offers restoration to those who buy their bags on Vintag and, to those who sell them, a 20% discount voucher for the purchase of a new product: an initiative that marries the modern philosophy of Circular Economy, based on the concepts of recycling and reuse.

Why do you care about the environmental issue? When and how did this attention to the environment begin?
I have always been convinced that vintage is ethical and sustainable.
Surely nothing is more “green” than extending the duration of use and giving a second chance to an object that someone else no longer uses. Vintage is synonymous with fewer new objects to produce and therefore less waste and pollution.

(who also owns Lancel) new member of Vintag, inspired by the bohemian youth culture of the Seventies, marries the concepts of sustainability and ethics at the base of Vintag, the meeting place of collectors, artists, designers, stylists, creatives or simply men and women who, in the search for style and quality of past times, prolong the duration of use of the objects.

An extra gesture of attention to the environment by Vintag that you want to tell us about?
I want to emphasize that Vintag has just signed an agreement to transfer all its data to the only zero-emission data center in southern Europe. We have abandoned the various Amazon, Aruba etc., highly polluting to continue to make our contribution in a green perspective by choosing a high-quality Italian company called Exe.it.

Noi vogliamo dimostrare che ci si può vestire bene senza comprare abiti nuovi, spendendo pochissimo e utilizzando l’enorme massa di indumenti che esiste già al di fuori dei circuiti commerciali consueti. La principale differenza tra noi e i negozi vintage che ovviamente esistono anche a Torino è che noi non siamo un negozio e quindi i prezzi sono molto più bassi, chi viene può chiederci aiuto nella scelta senza timore e si può cercare e curiosare senza dover comprare nulla.

English: ArmuaR, the (sustainable) wardrobe of wonders!

We write with pleasure about vintage and second-hand items, in an age in which the problem of the amount of new clothes we buy and the ones we throw away has taken on embarrassing dimensions (we buy 80 billion new garments every year worldwide and wear them on average from 7 to 10 times). Very willingly then we tell of beautiful sustainable initiatives, such as that of ArmuaR by Alessandra and Roberta, who thus present themselves: “We are two old friends, always fond of flea markets, clothes and vintage objects“.

From the passion for used and vintage, Alessandra and Roberta have created a beautiful project that involves clothing, accessories and stylish objects for the home.

How did ArmuaR begin?

“It has always been our custom to buy used clothing and exchange clothes with sisters, mothers, aunts and friends. A few years ago we decided to spread this practice and at the same time to empty our closets a bit by organizing meetings in our house in which to sell our clothes at very reasonable prices.
We created a page on facebook and someone arrived… After some time we found a basement under the house and about 4 years ago we made it our ArmuaR: it’s a basement room without even heating, but we can’t afford anything else, and we have furnished it with furniture and objects of recovery, without buying anything”.

Would you tell us more about ArmuaR?

“On Saturday we welcome those who want to come and visit us; we sell used clothes that come from our closets and from the closets of friends and relatives who give them to us, objects and bijoux, all at very small prices, because this activity is not our job (in life we both have two ‘real’ jobs), but it is a hobby that combines our passions for clothes and fashion, for vintage, for books (clothes are usually photographed with a book) and the proceeds from the sale are used to cover the local expenses”.

I saw beautiful sweaters, jackets, trench coats, necklaces… How do clothes and accessories arrive to ArmuaR?

“It happens more and more often, as they find out, that ArmuaR’s friends bring us their clothes, accessories and bijoux that they no longer use and even happened to offer us an entire wardrobe (an aunt or grandmother who is not there more and the house is to be emptied). Then there are the continuous rackings from our closets and those of the family (sisters, mothers, aunts). Some pieces are from our mothers, others were purchased over time in markets and shops during our travels; a good part, recently acquired, comes from the wardrobe of a lady from Turin: thanks to facebook we have been contacted by the heirs and we have recovered wonders”.

I also saw marvellous evening dresses!

“We have a collection of vintage ’50s/’70s evening dresses that we rent for special occasions (parties, weddings, shows …) and we used for photo shoots (rarely, because unfortunately the time to devote to these activities is very little).
Thanks to this small project we have met many people and some now buy clothes only from us. As you know, the culture of second-hand clothes was not so widespread in Italy until recently, the concept of second-hand items encountered many resistances and in Turin also vintage is not as appreciated as elsewhere.

We want to show that we can dress well without buying new clothes, spending very little and using the huge mass of clothing that already exists outside the usual commercial circuits. The main difference between us and the vintage shops that obviously also exist in Turin is that we are not a shop and therefore the prices are much lower, those who come can ask us for help in the choice without fear and we can search and browse without having to buy anything.

We are not even interested in the vintage of designer and precious pieces, because the prices would be different and our goal is another.
The same goes for the rental: it doesn’t make sense to buy an elegant dress that will be worn only once and never again”.

Why do you think it is not so easy to spread the purchase of second-hand items?

“There are cultural resistance, lack of habit and lack of knowledge. There are those who think of worn or outmoded garments in the second-hand word. Dedicated shops are mostly visited by second-hand enthusiasts, also because prices are not so cheap. In the markets you have to know how to choose, “having a sharp eye” and the patience to look, perhaps in the cold or in the heat and without being able to try. As far as vintage is concerned, many associate it with ‘grandma’s’ garments or too particular looks, while a vintage piece worn together with ‘current’ clothes can be a very elegant and modern choice“.

What do you think is the beauty of vintage and second-hand?

“For the vintage, ours is a passion: the clothes, the objects and the accessories of the past have a unique charm, the materials (fabrics and buttons) are generally precious, the patterns and the particular models, the clothes are often tailored, because it was customary to have them made by the seamstress. The vintage garments are unique, evoke a time and a story, aesthetically they are beautiful. The beauty of second-hand, on the other hand, is mostly an economic issue: if you can dress in clothes that are in excellent condition and that we like, but cost a third of new ones, why not do it? Obviously then there is the ecological discourse. The production of clothing is quantitatively impressive and environmental and ethical issues are linked to it, which fortunately are beginning to be known. Trying to buy less and to reuse and enhance what already exists can be a small contribution to solving a problem that affects us all”.

Your favorite vintage dress?

“Impossible to choose one. We love the clothes of the ’40s, even if eaten by moths, but with a unique cut, as well as the ’50s cocktail dresses or some lurex ’60s mini dresses, the floral and psychedelic fantasies of the ’70s, the shoulder straps years ’80. And each dress evokes a memory, a film, a book”.

Do we find something for man too?

“Exclusively for women, rarely for men, but they are exceptions (we have two tuxedos for hire). Unfortunately we do not have the space to expand the offer and our exchange channels are in any case exclusively female”.

I saw plates, porcelain, cutlery, cups, wonderful and elegant glasses… Do you also rent table accessories and furnishing accessories?

“We also rent furnishing accessories. We happened to rent items to set the table for theme parties, for example”.

ArmuaR is not just a store, right?

“When we can, we organise small events by hosting readings, painting workshops (space is small, but few are feasible) and even theatrical performances”.

An initiative that you have organized?

“We have twice hosted the theatrical performance ‘Sight unseen’ by and with Chiara Cardea and Silvia Mercuriati. The ArmuaR turned out to be a perfect box in which to represent the affairs of Irma and Nora and evoke their idols – writers, poets, musicians, artists – which are also our own. The meeting with Chiara and Silvia and their show was love at first sight. We also hosted twice the poet-painter Nadia Sponzilli, who recited her poems accompanied by Angela Alferi’s accordion”.

What do you like most about this project?

“Spreading a positive idea of ​​used and circular recovery; getting to know people we discover sharing our own passions and values; when we can, in our own small way, contribute to artistic and cultural projects with our clothes and accessories or just by making our space available.
Then there is the more ‘playful’ and creative part, which is that of handling our beloved objects and clothes, photographing them, arranging them in the ArmuaR, spending some time together (always too little), because this project would not be never born if we weren’t one in support of the other, doing it alone wouldn’t have the same meaning and wouldn’t be fun anyway”.

Camminando al mercato Monti (di Roma) ci fermiamo all’improvviso perché sembra di entrare dentro una fiaba: lampade uscite dalla mente fantasiosa di qualcuno che con occhi di bambino le ha create e che se hai occhi di bambino puoi apprezzare. Per un attimo mi è parso di ritrovarmi a parlare con una di queste ironiche creature luminose, ricordando le conversazioni notturne di Amélie (Il favoloso mondo di Amelie) con la sua abat-jour! Queste lampade, ne avrebbero di storie da raccontare…

Vi narrerebbero di come sono nate da Art Cocò unendo dadi, rondelle, vecchi ottoni, barre filettate, portalampade, pulsantini, porcellana, ceramica, legno e scatole di latta spesso dimenticate in polverose soffitte.

Vi mostrerebbero uno a uno i loro pezzi raccontandovene l’origine, orgogliose della loro nascita ecologica e della loro storia che a sua volta racchiude tanti racconti quanti i loro componenti: tutti oggetti destinati all’immondizia, puliti, rivisti e trasformati invece in sbalorditive creazioni dalle idee e dalle mani abili di Grazia Cecconi e Angela Iacobellis.

“Sulla barra costruiamo una storia”. Mi fermerei lì ad ascoltarle raccontare.

“Il braccio di un vecchio lampadario può diventare lo stelo di una lampada da tavolo, sfere di vetro sopravvissute al declino di lampadari di murano nidi per uccelli, e vecchie scatole di latta, la base di appoggio per cani e gatti in porcellana o facce anni ’40 di ragazzini impertinenti”. “Intanto piume, passamanerie e vecchie stoffe in seta liberano dall’anonimato ventole e paralumi troppo spesso noiosamente beige”.

Ogni componente è riciclato, nulla è nuovo. “A parte le nostre idee, un trapano a colonna, un piccolo frullino con dischi a ceramica ferro e plastica, tantissime frese, pinzette, tenaglie cacciaviti, e tutta la fantasia. Singoli elementi nelle nostre mani diventano progetto”.

Ecco come la fantasia può salvare l’ambiente.

Com’è nato il progetto Art Cocò? E come nascono queste lampade?

“Siamo 2 designer, abituate ad impaginare segni e immagini nello spazio. Abituate anche al montaggio video, un’alternanza ritmica, che non deve mai annoiare. Aggiungi che la pubblicità e il design ti abituano a veder realizzati in breve tempo i progetti creativi. Ti insegnano ad amare video e immagini vintage (pensa alla fotografia americana dagli anni ’30 ai ‘50) ed a mischiare queste vecchie immagini a segni moderni per ‘definire’ messaggi nuovi ed inattesi. Da qui, il passo è breve. Basta aggiungere la manualità alla progettazione e nascono oggetti, lampade nel nostro caso, che rispettano tutto l’iter creativo del messaggio pubblicitario. Per questo le lampade Art Cocò hanno un nome. Perché ognuna di esse è una storia nell’ambito della quale è possibile riconoscersi.

Una storia che fa leva sulle emozioni, sui ricordi, con l’obiettivo a volte di strappare un sorriso. Una storia che spesso  guida la ricerca di oggetti, un grande lavoro fatto di mercatini, robivecchi, cantine, e vecchie zie.

Ma vale anche tutto il contrario. A volte vedi un oggetto, un vecchio lampadario, una testa di porcellana e immagini quale lampada potrebbe diventare e quale nome potrebbe avere.

Poi c’è la bellezza di riciclare tutto, fino all’ultimo dado, di non produrre niente e usare solo materiali già esistenti spesso rotti o dimenticati. Un vero restyling di forme e materie”.

Da Art Cocò niente è fatto in serie e non esiste lampada uguale all’altra perché la progettazione inizia dallo smontaggio di vecchi lampadari o dal ritrovamento di una magnifica scatola in latta con tanto di decorazione, forma e colore.

English – In the fabulous world of Art Cocò’s bright creatures: when imagination saves the environment!

Walking at the Monti market (in Rome), we suddenly stop because it seems to enter into a fairy tale: lamps come out of the imaginative mind of someone who created them with childlike eyes and that can be appreciated if you have child eyes. For a moment it seemed to me to find myself talking to one of these ironic luminous creatures, remembering the nocturnal conversations of Amélie (Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain English) with her abat-jour! These lamps, they would have stories to tell for sure…

They would tell you how they were born from Art Cocò by combining nuts, washers, old brass, threaded rods, lamp holders, small buttons, porcelain, ceramic, wood and tin boxes often forgotten in dusty attics. They would show their pieces one by one telling you their origin, proud of their ecological birth and their history, which in turn contains as many stories as their components: all objects destined for garbage, cleaned, revised and transformed into stunning creations by the ideas and skillful hands of Grazia Cecconi and Angela Iacobelli. “On each rod we build a story”. I would stop there and listen to them telling.

“The arm of an old chandelier can become the stem of a table lamp, glass spheres that have survived the decline of Murano chandeliers, bird boxes, and old tin boxes, the base for porcelain dogs and cat faces or 1940s impertinent kid faces”. “Meanwhile, feathers, passementerie and old silk fabrics free fans and lampshades from the anonymity too often boringly beige”.

Every component is recycled, nothing is new. “Apart from our ideas, a column drill, a small grinder with iron and plastic ceramic discs, lots of cutters, tweezers, screwdriver tongs, and all the imagination. Individual elements in our hands become projects”.

Here’s how imagination can save the environment.

How was the Art Cocò project born? And how are these lamps born?

“We are two designers, used to create layout of signs and images in space. Also used to video editing, a rhythmic alternation, which should never be boring. Add that advertising and design will get you used to seeing creative projects realized in a short time. They teach you to love vintage videos and images (think of American photography from the 1930s to the 1950s) and mix these old images with modern signs to ‘define’ new and unexpected messages. From here, the step is short. Just add the manual skills to the design and the objects are born, lamps in our case, which respect the whole creative process of the advertising message. This is why the Art Cocò lamps have a name. Because each of them is a story in which it is possible to recognize oneself.

A story that relies on emotions, on memories, with the aim sometimes to obtain a smile. A story that often guides the search for objects, a great job made up of flea markets, junk shops, basements, and old aunts.

But the opposite is also true. Sometimes you see an object, an old chandelier, a porcelain head and imagine which lamp could become and what name it might have.

Then there is the beauty of recycling everything, up to the last nut, of producing nothing and of using only existing materials that are often broken or forgotten. A true restyling of forms and materials“.

At Art Cocò nothing is done in series and there is no lamp like the other because the design starts with the dismantling of old chandeliers or the discovery of a magnificent tin box with decoration, shape and color.

Nel turbinio della vita quotidiana capita di accantonare oggetti da riparare. Tra queste, le scarpe. Al mattino di corsa ti infili un paio di stivali e la cerniera decide di abbandonarti proprio quei 5 secondi prima di uscire di casa… Li lasci lì, pensando che hai bisogno di un paio nuovo. Basta buttarli e mettersi alla ricerca, in fondo è divertente scovare accessori e vestiti e pensare a un nuovo acquisto. Però… sono praticamente nuovi. Si tratta solo di una cerniera di uno dei due stivali. Sono così comodi e ancora in buono stato. Ma soprattutto… scrivi per una pagina di moda sostenibile, non puoi di certo creare rifiuti inutili!

Piano piano accade con altre paia… una scarpa che si macchia, un tacco che si usura, quegli stivali che stanno larghi sul polpaccio, una suola rovinata. Si aggiungono nel frattempo anche le borse: la tracolla che cede, la chiusura che si stacca, la sbucciatura sul davanti. Una precisazione: non è perché la qualità sia scarsa, ma parliamo di scarpe tenute negli anni (tanti) o acquistate di seconda mano e di borse vintage! La borsa a cui si è staccata la chiusura è degli anni ’40, quella della tracolla degli anni ’80, dopo decenni può capitare.

Per non vedere questi ruderi accumulati nell’armadio pensi a quanto sarebbe semplice buttare e ricomprare. Questione di un attimo, metti nel sacchetto, scendi ed è fatta. Ma no! Non riesci, è diventato impossibile. Dopo aver visto con i tuoi occhi e raccolto rifiuti sulle coste non riesci. Riparare: questa è la scelta migliore. Così resisti alla vista dei ruderi finché un giorno non trovi il tempo di andare dal calzolaio. È una fortuna trovarne uno bravo e paziente, che ti consigli e trovi con te la soluzione più adatta a fare in modo che indosserai davvero ancora quelle scarpe. Anche se non è dietro casa non importa. Carichi la bici con un borsone (un consiglio: non aspettare di accumularne così tante!) e ti presenti dal calzolaio con un elenco di acciacchi di scarpe e borse, insieme a idee per rimetterle a nuovo.

Nella foto, il primo ritiro in una giornata di pioggia in bici: la borsa a tracolla, le scarpe con il tacco che era sbucciato, agli stivali larghi sul polpaccio abbiamo aggiunto un bottoncino. Attendiamo il secondo ritiro! Avanti e indietro, ma ne vale la pena, guardo le borse recuperate e le scarpe come nuove nell’armadio e mi sento meglio!

In the whirlwind of everyday life it happens to set aside objects to be repaired. Among these, the shoes. In the morning, you run a pair of boots and the zipper decides to leave just those 5 seconds before leaving home …You leave them there, thinking that you need a new pair. Just throw them and look for a new pair, after all it is fun to find out accessories and clothes and to think about a new purchase. But … they are really new. It is just a zipper of one of the two boots. They are so comfortable and still in good condition. But above all … you write for a sustainable fashion page, you can not certainly create useless waste!

Slowly it happens with other pairs … a shoe with a stain, a heel that wears out, those boots that are wide on the calf, a ruined sole. In the meantime, also the bags are added: the shoulder strap that yields, the closure that comes off, the peeling on the front. A clarification: it is not because the quality is poor, but we are talking about shoes held over the (many) years or bought second-hand and vintage bags! The bag that has come off the closure is the ’40s, the shoulder strap of the’ 80s, after decades it can happen.

Not to see these ruins accumulated in the closet, you think how simple it would be to throw them and buy back. It takes one second: put them in the bag, go down and it’s done. But no! You can not do it, it has become impossible. After having seen with your eyes and collected waste on the coasts, you can not. Repair: this is the best choice. So you resist the sight of the ruins, until one day you find the time to go to the shoemaker. It is fortunate to find a good and patient shoe repairer, who will advise you and find with you the best solution to make sure that you will really wear those shoes again. Even if it’s not around the corner, it does not matter. Load the bike baskets with a bag (a tip: do not wait to accumulate so many ruins!) And you appear in front of the shoe repairer with a list of afflictions of your shoes and bags, along with ideas on how to put them back to life.

In the picture, the first pick up on a rainy day ride bike: the shoulder bag, the shoes with the heel that was peeled, the wide boots on the calf we added a little button. We’re waiting for the second withdrawal! Back and forth, but it’s worth it, I look at the bags recovered and the shoes shining like new in the closet and I feel better!
