Capi per cui in etichetta è indicato lavaggio a secco: c’è un rimedio ecologico che possiamo usare a casa per lavare senza ricorrere alla lavanderia a secco e senza rovinarli?

“Purtroppo non sono esperta in questo. Non ho molti capi che hanno questo scritto in etichetta, cerco di non acquistarne proprio perché il lavaggio “a secco” significa che la lavanderia userà solventi, una delle cose più tossiche che si hanno in un laboratorio chimico…quindi, oltre ad essere sostanze inquinanti, mi sento in colpa soprattutto per l’operatrice (spero usi tutte le accortezze necessarie!).

Se però è un indumento di lana in realtà non c’è bisogno di lavarlo a secco, basta avere delle accortezze (già indicate sopra): l’ideale sarebbe usare un detergente basato principalmente su tensioattivi anionici (tipo sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, ecc).
Queste sostanze imbibiscono relativamente poco la lana, cioè non entrano nelle fibre e quindi la stressano molto meno per esempio dei dei tensioattivi non-ionici (come il coco-glucoside, decyl-glucoside, ecc. che invece penetrano molto di più nelle fibre e infeltriscono). Basta consultare la lista degli ingredienti e verificare che i non-ionici siano in quantità minore rispetto agli anionici. Ecco perché un ottimo detergente per la lana e anche i delicati è il detersivo per piatti: solitamente è a basso contenuto di non-ionici.
Oppure uno shampoo o bagnoschiuma con brutto Inci, che non volete buttare ma nemmeno mettervelo addosso o che trovate ad un prezzo molto economico.

Ho invece un paio di vestiti in seta a cui tengo molto e che non mi sono mai fidata a lavare a casa. Sono da ‘cerimonia’ e quindi per quelle poche volte che ho necessità di lavarli preferisco affidarmi alla lavanderia perché non saprei gestirli”.

La cura con cui riponiamo i vestiti nell’armadio aiuta a mantenerli nel tempo?

“Beh, se si hanno capi in lana allora bisogna stare attenti alle tarme!

Un utente del forum scrisse che sua nonna, magliaia, sosteneva che l’unica cosa davvero sicura contro le tarme, al cambio di stagione, è di chiudere i maglioni in ‘buste di plastica’. Questo perché non sono le farfalline a mangiare la lana, ma le larve, perciò bisogna evitare che vengano deposte le uova nell’armadio e sugli abiti! È alla farfallina che da fastidio l’odore di alcune sostanze, e non alle larve. Comunque, per dar fastidio alla farfallina, è possibile invece seguire i consigli di Marco Valussi, esperto di oli essenziali e di piante medicinali. Ha un sito web molto interessante www.infoerbe.it, in cui tutto è affrontato con rigore scientifico (è stato anche il responsabile della parte botanica dell’ecobiodizionario di Zago).
Vi copio incollo ciò che scrive: “Puoi utilizzare l’olio essenziale di Juniperus virginiana, oppure di Cedro, oppure di Thuja, oppure olio essenziale di Rosmarini chemiotipi canfora, oppure ancora olio essenziale di Lavandula stoecha (ricca in canfora). L’ideale sarebbe poterli applicare direttamente al legno dell’armadio, per esempio mescolandoli a della cera da applicazioni. Oppure metterli in supporti legnosi (pout-purri) che permettano un rilascio ritardato, altrimenti rischi un’emissione rapida ma di breve durata. Metti il pout-purri in un recipiente di vetro per un giorno, per permettere agli oli di permearlo completamente, poi trasferiscilo nei sacchetti tulle”.

La bufala più grande a cui abbocca chi cerca prodotti più ecologici?

“Sono due. La prima è quella di usare il bicarbonato come scioglicalcare (il calcare si scioglie con le sostanze acide, mentre il bicarbonato è una sostanza alcalina… non serve la laurea in chimica per capire che non può funzionare!). La seconda è che l’aceto sia ecologico”.

Sul nostro sito consigliamo sempre di utilizzare il sacchetto per trattenere le microfibre dei tessuti… Voglio credere che funzioni… o è inutile anche quello?

Non lo conosco e quindi non posso esprimermi. Fabrizio Zago potrebbe forse fare una sperimentazione in questo senso. L’eco-furbo è sempre in agguato, soprattutto ora che il green e l’eco-bio vanno tanto di moda… quindi aspetto di vedere dati e le news da chi, per lavoro, testa queste cose.

Ti dedichi anche a ricette per dentifricio, deodorante, prodotti per la pulizia della casa, ecc. Dove possiamo trovarle?

Il tuo prodotto preferito?

“Se intendi autoprodotto, è certamente il deodorante (con bicarbonato puro e basta) e il balsamo (con acido citrico in acqua): efficaci, economici, ecologici e super semplici. In assoluto la sintesi del mio blog (e tutto merito del mitico Fabrizio Zago).

Per quanto riguarda quelli commerciali, sono i prodotti a marchio Ecolabel, la certificazione europea di qualità: compromesso tra prezzo, efficienza ed ecologicità (calcolata scientificamente). Negli ultimi tempi ci sono molte ditte che producono prodotti efficaci e davvero ecologici, non solo per le materie prime utilizzate, ma anche per l’uso di energia rinnovabile e la continua ricerca in laboratorio. Molte hanno anche il marchio Ecobiocontrol. Mi permetto di cirtarne una, è Officina Naturae, di cui adoro i prodotti e le persone che li hanno creati, e che mi ha anche salvato più volte da casi di temporanee dermatiti dei bimbi”.

Hai scritto un libro? Dove si acquista?

“Il libro si chiama ‘Mammachimica’. L’obiettivo era raccontare la chimica applicata alla vita quotidiana, in particolare per quanto riguarda la detergenza, in modo divertente ma soprattutto scientifico. Arricchito da bellissimi disegni di mio marito Gianni. Proprio per vedere la chimica con occhi diversi, come può essere ‘buona’ e utile nella vita di tutti i giorni e scoprire anche che ‘naturale’ non sempre significa innocuo. Imparare a smascherare le bufale che circolano in rete, TV e giornali sulla detergenza eco-bio.

È una specie di ‘riassunto’ degli articoli pubblicati sul mio sito web e non un libro di ricette. Questo libro è molto di più. Innanzitutto ci sono gli interventi di Fabrizio Zago, chimico esperto di detergenza sostenibile e consulente Ecolabel per la Comunità Europea. Un vero e proprio ‘grillo parlante’, che ci informa su come stanno veramente le cose attualmente, nel campo dei detersivi e dei cosmetici. Ma soprattutto è un libro che contribuirà a finanziare ‘Il Nuovo Comitato Nobel per i disabili Onlus’, fondato da Dario Fo e Franca Rame.

English: How to wash (really) our clothes in an ecological way so that they can have a long life? The effective and scientific advices of Mammachimica – 6

We are at the sixth episode and the last one of the advice of Mammachimica (www.mammachimica.it), Sara Alberghini, that we have met here: come-lavare-in-modo-ecologico-i-vestiti-affinche-durino-nel-tempo-i-consigli-efficaci-e-scientifici-di-mammachimica-1/. Garments for which on the label is indicated dry cleaning: is there an ecological remedy that we can use at home to wash without resorting to dry cleaning and without ruining them?

“Unfortunately I’m not an expert in this. I do not have many garments that have this written on the label, I try not to buy them because the dry cleaning means that the laundry will use solvents, one of the most toxic things you have in a chemical laboratory… so, besides being pollutants, I feel guilty especially for the operator (I hope he/she uses all the necessary precautions!).

However, if it is a woolen garment there is really no need to dry clean it, it is enough to have some precautions (already mentioned in the previous episodes): the ideal would be to use a detergent based mainly on anionic surfactants (such as sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, etc).

These substances imbibe the wool relatively little, that is they do not enter the fibres and therefore stress it much less for example of non-ionic surfactants (such as coco-glucoside, decyl-glucoside, etc. which instead penetrate much more into the fibres and felting). Just consult the list of ingredients and verify that the non-ionic are in smaller quantities than anionics. This is why an excellent detergent for wool and even the delicate is dishwashing detergent: it is usually low in non-ionic.
Or a shampoo or body wash with ugly Inci, which you don’t want to throw away, or even put it on or find at a very cheap price.

Instead, I have a pair of silk dresses that I care a lot about and never trusted to wash at home. I am from ‘ceremony’ and therefore for the few times that I need to wash them I prefer to rely on the laundry because I can’t handle them”.

Does the care with which we store clothes in the closet help keep them in place over time?

“Well, if you have woolen clothes then you have to be careful of moths!

A user of the forum wrote that his grandmother, knitter, claimed that the only thing really safe against moths, at the change of season, is to close the sweaters in ‘plastic bags’. This is because it is not the butterflies that eat the wool, but the larvae, so you have to avoid laying eggs in the closet and on the clothes! It is to the butterfly that the smell of some substances bothers, and not to the larvae. However, to annoy the butterfly, you can instead follow the advice of Marco Valussi, an expert on essential oils and medicinal plants. It has a very interesting website www.infoerbe.it, where everything is dealt with with scientific rigor (he was also responsible for the botanical part of Zago’s eco-dictionary.)
I copy and past for you: “You can use the essential oil of Juniperus virginiana, or of Cedar, or of Thuja, or essential oil of Rosemary chemotypes camphor, or even essential oil of Lavandula stoecha (rich in camphor). The ideal would be to be able to apply them directly to the wood of the closet, for example by mixing them with wax from applications. Or put them in wooden supports (pout-purri) that allow a delayed release, otherwise you risk a rapid but short-term emission. Put the pout-purri in a glass container for a day, to allow the oils to permeate it completely, then transfer it to the tulle bags”.

The biggest hoax that those looking for greener products are looking for?

“They are two. The first is to use bicarbonate as a decalcifier, (limestone melts with acidic substances, while bicarbonate is an alkaline substance… you don’t need a degree in chemistry to understand that it can’t work!). The second is that the vinegar is ecological”.

On our site we always recommend using the bag to hold tissue microfibers… I want to believe that it works… or is that useless too?

I don’t know it so I can’t express myself. Fabrizio Zago could perhaps do an experiment in this sense. The eco-cunning is always lurking, especially now that the green and eco-bio are so fashionable… so I wait to see data and news from those who, for work, test these things.

You also dedicate yourself to recipes for toothpaste, deodorant, household cleaning products, etc. Where can we find them?

“If you mean self-produced, it is certainly the deodorant (with pure baking soda) and the balm (with citric acid in water): effective, economical, ecological and super simple. Absolutely the summary of my blog (and all thanks to the legendary Fabrizio Zago). 

As for the commercial ones, they are the Ecolabel products, the European quality certification: compromise between price, efficiency and ecological (scientifically calculated). In recent times there are many companies that produce effective and truly ecological products, not only for the raw materials used, but also for the use of renewable energy and continuous research in the laboratory. Many also have the Ecobiocontrol brand. I allow myself to mention one, it is Officina Naturae, of which I love the products and the people who created them, and who has also saved me several times from cases of temporary dermatitis of children”.

Have you written a book? Where can we buy it?

“The book is called ‘Mammachimica’. The aim was to tell the chemistry applied to everyday life, in particular as regards detergency, in a fun but above all scientific way. Enriched by beautiful drawings by my husband Gianni. Just to see chemistry with different eyes, how can it be ‘good’ and useful in everyday life and also discover that ‘natural’ does not always mean harmless. It’s a kind of ‘summary’ of the articles published on my website and not a recipe book. This book is much more. First of all, there are the interventions by Fabrizio Zago, an expert chemist in sustainable detergents and an Ecolabel consultant for the European Community. A veritable ‘talking cricket’, which informs us how things really are today, in the field of detergents and cosmetics. Dietro ogni articolo che trovate qui, ci sono non solo ore di studio e ricerca dedicate con passione all’argomento trattato (es. sui materiali descritti oppure sui brand proposti), ma anche impegno nella comprensione delle sfide che si trova davanti chi come voi decide (o non) di intraprendere un cammino di maggiore sostenibilità e responsabilità verso le persone e l’ambiente.

Anyone can start, anyone can slowly take one more step, with their own pace.
On the other hand, we sincerely want to tell you that this journey is also made of daily efforts that we support to try to live as coherently as possible with what we offer and the ideas we support. We understand the small or big difficulties that can go with a change in one’s lifestyle or one’s family lifestyle. We understand it because in our real life daily commitment, not only on our website, Facebook page or Instagram account, we live these small / big challenges.

A great second-hand purchase: long- lasting cashmere. Do you know the impact of this fiber?

The cashmere market has expanded in the last 20-30 years causing a rapid increase in the number of goats (4 times as many as there were in Mongolia 30 years ago, the region where cashmere mostly comes from). That increased amount of goats means overgrazing, that led to massive land degradation and soil erosion, impacting the climate. 

What can we do? Buying second-hand cashmere. It is a high-quality material, soft, keeping you warm and comfortable and it is long lasting. Choose a classic piece that you can wear for decades, you won’t regret it.

On Saturday we found this (second-hand) super soft cardigan, 100% cashmere, with accurate details like the double small bottons, for a very convenient price (the twin set was 18 euros). Dressing in a more sustainable way does not always mean expensive!

Il mercato del cashmere si è ampliato negli ultimi 20-30 anni causando un rapido aumento del numero di capre (4 volte tanto quelle presenti in Mongolia 30 anni fa, la regione da cui principalmente proviene il cashmere). L’incremento significativo di questi animali comporta pascolo in eccesso, che causa un massiccio deterioramento del terreno e l’erosione del suolo, con conseguenze sul clima.

Cosa possiamo fare? Acquistare cashmere  di seconda mano. È un materiale di alta qualità, soffice, mantiene al caldo, è molto confortevole e dura a lungo. Scegliete un capo classico da indossare per decenni, non ve ne pentirete!

Sabato abbiamo trovato questo golfino super morbido (usato), 100% cashmere, con dettagli molto accurati come i doppi bottoncini, a un prezzo davvero conveniente (18 euro il twin-set). Vestire in modo più sostenibile non vuol sempre dire costoso!

Un’alternativa: scegliete indumenti di cachmere sostenibile, verificandone la provenienza e l’impegno del produttore verso le persone e l’ambiente.

A Formigine , in provincia di Modena, si è svolta il 16 settembre scorso una sfilata di beneficenza in cui abiti donati dalla cittadinanza hanno avuto un momento di celebrità, indossati dai volontari sul tappeto rosso disteso nella piazza principale. Vestiti usati che tornano a vivere uscendo dagli armadi dopo essere stati adocchiati dagli spettatori e grazie anche agli affezionati clienti del Charity Shop in via dei Servi a Modena che si occupa della vendita di questi capi.

Chiara, dell’associazione Porta Aperta di Modena da cui nasce l’iniziativa, ha un talento nell’individuare abbinamenti, pezzi unici, outfit da sfilata, suggerimenti per indossare con stile ciò che sembrava dovesse aver terminato il suo compito. Con la sua abilità dimostra ogni anno che presentando nel giusto modo i capi usati è possibile salvarli dai rifiuti e allo stesso tempo sia rendere felice chi è alla ricerca di qualcosa di nuovo per il proprio guardaroba sia raccogliere aiuti economici dalla vendita. Vestiti, jumpsuit, giacche jeans, maglioni, parka, abiti da sposa, completi sportivi, cappottini, scarpe, bigiotteria, giacche in pelle, camice, borse: tutto quanto la generosità dei cittadini porta all’associazione diventa materiale per una sfilata coi fiocchi e successivamente un interessante rifornimento per il negozio collegato. Se passate a Modena, non perdete l’occasione di dare un’occhiata a quanto è disponibile!

In Formigine, near Modena, a charity fashion show was held on the 16th of September: the donated clothes from the city inhabitants had their moment of celebrity, being worn by volunteers on the red carpet in the main city square. Second-hand dresses that are back to life coming out from wardrobes, after having being spotted by spectators and thanks to the loyal customers of the Charity Shop at Via dei Servi in Modena that takes care of selling those clothes.
Chiara, from Porta Aperta Modena association that creates the event, has a talent in identifying the right matching, the unique pieces, the fashion show outfits, the suggestions to wear in style what it seemed to have completed its task. With her ability, she shows every year that presenting second-hand items in the right way is possible to save them from waste, at the same time both making happy who is looking for something new in his wardrobe and collecting economic support from sales. Dresses, jumpsuits, jeans jackets, sweaters, parkas, wedding dresses, sportswear, coats, shoes, costume jewellery, leather jackets, shirts, bags: everything that the generosity of the citizens brings to the association becomes material for a great fashion show and later an interesting supply for the relevant shop.
